The aim of my project-TO CLEAR UP THE HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES OF THE DAYS OF THE WEEK AND THE MONTH IN English. The following tasks: -to know the history of the appearance of the seven-day week, - to find the information about the origin of the days of the week and the months, - to find the information about the use of names of the days of the week and the months in the poems, in the proverbs and in the idioms.

The Calendar The origin of the word ,,calendar” is Latin ,,calendarium’’.We can translate this word as ,,book debt’’.

The Week

Moon-Луна, Mercury-Меркурий, Venus-Венера, Sun-Солнце, Mars-Марс, Jupiter-Юпитер, Saturn-Сатурн.

Monday Tuesday Moon and Day It was called in honor of the one-armed god Tera.

Wednesday Thursday It was called in honor of the god Wotan. It was called in honor of the god of thunder and storms.

Friday Saturday It was called in honor of the goddess Freya(love, marriage). It was the day of Saturn.

Sunday Sun and Day

The use of the days of the week in the modern world

MONTHS January February It was called in honor of the two-faced god Janus. It was called in honor of Roman festival of purification of Februa.

March April It was called in honor of the god of war Mars. It was called in honor of the goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite.

May June It was called in honor of the goddess of fertility Maya. It was called in honor of the goddess of marriage Juno.

July August It was called in honor of Julius. It was called in honor of Augustus.

September-seven (septem)-the seventh month. October-eight(octo)-the eighth month. December-ten(decem)-the tenth month. November-nine(novem)-the nineth month.

The use the days of the week and the months in the poems, proverbs and idioms. Blue Monday- a heavy Monday. Monday feeling- when you don’t want to work. Man Friday- Friday, a faithful servant. Friday fare- lenter fare. A month of Sundays- whole eternity.

The english proverbs. Every day is not Sunday.-Не каждый день воскресенье(Не всё коту масленица). When two Sundays come together.-Когда два воскресенья встретятся(Когда рак на горе свистнет).
