Immortal Regiment movement to revive memory of Victory Day We are going to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War on the 9th of May. Much time passed but the importance of our people feat in that war will never reduce and the glory of that time heroes will never vanish. On Victory Day the Immortal Regiment March will be held all over Russia and beyond. Thousands of people will form columns and carry the portraits of their grandfathers, the participants of the Great Patriotic War who are no longer with us.

The Immortal Regiment aims to preserve a memory of the Great Patriotic War’s soldiers in all families. My family will also participate in the events dedicated to the 70th Victory Anniversary. Let me tell a short biography of my great- grandfather, who was a soldier of the War. Grigoriy Arkhipovich Zemskov was born in the village of Mikhailovka, Samara region on May 8, 1921.

My great-grandfather went to the army in May,1940. He served as an infantry man in Belorussia. A year later the war started and he got to the front. Several times his battalion was encircled. Getting out of one encirclement they got into another one. Struggling with fights they came back to the regiment disposition to be strictly interrogated. Fortunately, he was not shot up or sent to a penal battalion. Grigoriy Arkhipovich was wounded three times during the war. His leg was badly injured in 1942. He spend a year in the rear. Then he returned to the front and fought up to end of the war. After the war he came back home and got married. His wife Lidiya and he worked hard to bring up four daughters. One of them was my grandmother.

Unfortunately, I did not see my great-grandpa alive. But my grandmother and her sisters often tell me about him. He used to be kind-hearted, optimistic and merry. He often played with his grandchildren: my dad and his sister. But he found it difficult to talk about the war time and tried not to remember it. Great-grandfather Grisha was awarded a lot of orders and medals both during the war and after it. My family and I remember and honour my great-grandfather. We are taking part in the parade on May 9 in a column of the Immortal Regiment.
