Cherenkov Pavel Alexeevich Pavel Cherenkov- Soviet physicist, a two-time winner of the Stalin Prize. Fundamental work on the study Cherenkov radiation he discovered the charged particles traveling at over the speed of light, were a significant contribution to world science and recognized classic. For his work on the discovery and study of this phenomenon Cherenkov together with Vavilov, Tamm and Frank first in 1946 he was awarded the State Prize, and in 1958 (after the death of Vavilov) Cherenkov, Tamm and Frank were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics.

They are unusual in wavelength and polarization was found blue radiation emitted by the irradiation of its water of gamma-radiation. Later this radiation was called Cherenkov radiation, and the effect, respectively - Cerenkov effect. Cherenkov showed that this radiation is not luminescence, but he could not explain. For this work in 1940 Cherenkov was awarded the degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
