The first organized athletic day for disabled athletes that coincided with the Olympic Games took place on the day of the opening of the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. Jewish-German born Dr. Ludwig Guttmann of Stoke Mandeville Hospital, who had been helped to flee Nazi Ger-many by the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA) in 1939, hosted a sports competition for British World War II veteran patients with spinal cord injuries. The first games were called the 1948 Inter- national Wheelchair Games, and were in- tended to coincide with the 1948 Olympics.

Andrei Lebedinsky Andrei was born in Khabarovsk in 1963. From an early age he was fond of shooting, because his father was a hunter and often took his son into the woods with him. In fact, he gave Andrei the first shooting lessons.

Later, at the age of fourteen, the boy went to the shooting classes, where had shown his skills. At fifteen, he became a candidate, and at seventeen - the master of sports. The guy predicted a great sporting future. In 1981 he won the USSR Championship in shooting. But tragedy struck in 1984, which resulted in loosing his leg. For a year he was undergoing treatment and rehabilitation, and to pay for it, Lebedinsky had to sell sport equipment. But as soon as the doctors gave the green light, he resumed training as he could not imagine his life without sport. He made his debut in 1996, the national team, having won three medals (two gold and one bronze).

Albert Bakaev Albert Bakaev was born in the capital of the Southern Urals. There, in Chelyabinsk, he made his first steps in sport. He came to the pool at seven, and at fifteen got Sport master in swimming. In 1984, his life broke into trouble. He got a serious spinal injury during a training. Medicine culd do nothing about it. Albert was paralyzed. Everyone thought that the fate of a successful athlete and a talented student of medical academy was ruined. He is now confined to a wheelchair. But Albert proved to everyone that his life is not over. He started to train again and competed swimmers with disabilities.

He won multiple USSR Championships, a lot Russia Championships. He became a Paralympic champion in 1996 and holder of several medals from world and European championships. In addition to his sports career, like many Russian Paralympians, Albert engaged in social activities. Basically, at home, in the Chelyabinsk region, but he was also a member of the countrys Paralympic Committee. Bakaev Albert died of a heart attack in 2009.
