The world’s greatest international sports games are known as the Olympic games. The Olympic idea means friendship, fraternity and cooperation among the people of the world.

The Olympic Games began in ancient Greece in 776 B.C. The games were part of a festival held every fourth year. It was a great athletic festival, including competitions in wrestling, foot racing and chariot racing, rowing and others.

The games were for men only. Greek women were forbidden not only to participate but also to watch the Olympics.

The Olympic Games had been held for about eleven hundred years, until the emperor Theodosius banned them for religious reasons in 394 A.D.

The modern Olympic Games The first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens. In the modern Olympic Games it’s the custom to start off with the arrival of a runner carrying a lighted torch. Then in the Olympic stadium a flame is lit and it continues to burn for all the Games as a sign that peace will be kept all the year.

The founder of the modern Olympic Games is Pierre de Coubertin.

Winter Olympic Games Winter Olympic Games first were held in 1924. Now they take place every four years. During these Games the athletes compete in skiing, figure skating, ice-hockey, tobogganing, etc.

The Olympic Games are very popular in the world. The Games have taken place in many countries in the world: in the USA, England, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, Japan and others.

The 22d summer Olympic Games were held in Moscow in 1980.

The 22d Winter Olympic Games were in Sochi in 2014.
