2. Listening activity “A brief story about the history of Almaty” The first settlement of Turkic and Mongolian nomads was found in 1854 and called Almaty. A little later the fortify Zailiyskoye was found in that place . Then the fortress renamed into Vernoye and existed from 1867 till 1921. In the middle of the 19-th century many Russian settlers arrived to Verny. The fortress grew in it’s size and developed quickly thanks to migration. In 1921the town Verny was renamed into Almaty . The skating rink “Medeu” The world’s famous skating rink Medeu was built in 1972 in a picturesque gorge which is located 15 km. from Almaty. It’s 10,500 sq. meter ice area is the best place for outdoor world competitions in speed skating.

“Shimbulak” Mountain ski resort Shimbulak is situated at 2200-2500 meters in the picturesque Shimbulak Gorge. It is remarkable for its mild climate with a lot of sunny days.

“Kok tobe” Kok tobe Mountain is one of the most beautiful and amazing places of Kazakhstan. It’s the highest point of the city which is situated at a height of 1100 meters above the sea level.

“Peak Khan Tangri” Khan Tangiri is 6995 m. high and it is one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Khan Tangriri is on the border of Kazakhstan and Kirgizstan close to their borders with China.

“Peak Talgar” Talgar Peak is 4973-meter high. Its slopes are covered with glaciers and snowfields. The first ascent of Talgar Peak was performed in 1935. It also has some of the most scenic hiking.

“Charyn Canyon” It’s popularly said that Charyn Canyon is a smaller version of the famous Grand ColoradoCanyon in the US, but really it has a charm of its own.

“The Ili River” The Ili river flows west out of China and eventually North-west into lake Balhkash. It is a good sport for fishing.

“Ulken Almaty Lake” This lake is located at 2510 meters above sea level, 15 kilometers south of Almaty. In its southern part the lake receives the water of the Ulken Almaty River.
