Everybody of us like sport: somebody likes football and weightlifting, other likes gymnastics and skiing. But there is the most important day in sports calendar – The Olympic Games. 

The history 

The «motherland» of the Olympic Games is the Ancient Greece, where the first plays were situated in 776 BC. It consisted only running and the first winner was Korab from the Elida. All those games was dedicated to the Zeus.

Tradition of the Olympic Games was relived in the 19 century by Pierre de Coubertin - founder and president of the International Olympic Committee. He was born in French, in the aristocratic family. He thought that sport is one of the most important parts in teenagers life, so his plans about the Olympic Games were realized in the 1896 in Athens.

5 crossing circles are the symbol of The Olympic Games, meaning 5 continents. 

Runner brings torch with the Olympic fire to the place of The Olympic Games and sets fire, which burns till the end of the Games. 

Nowadays The Olympic Games are held once in 4 years. The Games of 2012 year were situated in London. 

At the head of the procession, opening The Olympic Games, is always the team of Greece, and the last team is the team of country, hosting these Games. 

Traditionally torch with the Olympic fire is sent in city, where The Games are situated, from Athens. The Olympic fire is set in Athens every year with the help of the sun lights and high-powered lens. 

Modern Olympic golden medals are not from gold: only 1 gram of gold in 210 gram of silver. The last time sportsmen were awarded with real golden medals in 1912. 

The device of The Olympic Games is «Citius, Altius, Fortius», meaning «Faster, Higher, Stronger». 

At the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens there were only 311 men, and no women. 

The first Olympic champion was Charlotte Cooper (Britain), who did it in 1900, winning tennis tournament. 
