THIS IS BRITAIN The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. It consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK is an island state. The two main islands are Great Britain and Ireland. They are separated by the Irish Sea. The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. The United Kingdom is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the North Sea in the east.

National Life Britains flag is called the “Union Jack”. It is really three flags on top of each other-the red cross on white of St. George for England, the white “X” on blue of St. Andrew for Scotland, and the red “X” on white of St. Patrick for Ireland. You will see the Union Jack on top of government offices in London. British people have fun with their flag. They put it on biscuit tins, party hats and plastic bags.

SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. The Queen is the Head of State, but she has no real power. Parliament consists of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Parliament and the monarch have different roles in the government of the country. The Prime Minister is the leader of the winning party, who heads the Government and appoints ministers.

THE QUEEN The royal title of the Queen is : “Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Queen is the Head of the Commonwealth of the UK. The Queen in Britain has very little power. She Reigns but doesn’t Rule. But the Queen is a symbol of Britains long history and national traditions. Buckingham Palace- the official residence of the Queen.

LONDON London has been a capital city for nearly a thousand years. Once, London was a small Roman town on the north bank of the river Thames, but slowly it grew into one of the world’s major cities with more than 8 million people. The heart of London is the City. Westminster is the governmental part of London. The West End is the richest and most beautiful part. The East End is the poorest district of London.
