Australia Australia is a fascinating country. It is full of strange and wonderful places, unusual animals and amazing culture. Australia is called “ the upside down world”, because it lies in the Southern Hemisphere where winter comes in July and summer begins in December. Captain Cook discovered Australia in 1770. Australia is an island, a continent and a country. It’s the worlds largest island and its smallest (but oldest!) continent. Australia is located to the south of Asia between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The total area of the country is 7,7 million square km. The capital of the country is Canberra, this city became a capital in 1927. Federal government works in Canberra in the government buildings. There are no industrial plants in the town. The population of Canberra is about 300 000 people. There are five big cities in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. These cities are also the countrys main ports. The kangaroo and emu can be seen on Australia’s coat of-arms. Australia is an industrial country. It has oil, nickel, zinc and gold. Australia is one of the most important producers of metals and minerals. It exports wool production, meat, fruit and sugar. There are lots of strange and unusual animals in Australia. Many of them- the kangaroo, the dingo, the koala, the echidna, the platypus are found nowhere in the world.
