The land The UK of Great Britain is situated on the British Isles. Their total area is 244000 million square kilometers. The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and The English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. ENGLAND The capital of England is London but there are other famous cities, such as Liverpool, Oxford and Cambridge. Oxford and Cambridge are the home of the oldest university of England. England is the southern and middle part of the island. The symbol of Wales is a rose

SCOTLAND SCOTLAND is in the North. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. There are two large cities here: Glasgow and Aberdeen. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. The symbol of Scotland is a thistle.

Wales WALES is in the west. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. The symbol of Wales is Daffodil. Wales is a country of lakes. It has the most famous lake in the world – Loch-Ness. Seas and oceans influence the British climate witch is not too cold in winter but hot in summer.

Northern Ireland NORTHERN IRELAND is situated in the Ireland. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The symbol of Northern Ireland is a shamrock and red hand.

THE QUEEN AND THE PARLIAMENT It is rather difficult to understand the British way of ruling the country. In Britain the Queen is the Head of State, but fact she doesnt rule the country as she has no power. She travels about the UK, meets different people and schools. Hospitals and other places. So do all members of the Royal family:the Queens husband, her son Prince Charles, the Queens daughter Princess Anna, and Princess Margaret. Questions

THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT The real power in the country belongs to the British Parliament and to the British Government. The British Parliament has two «houses»: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords doesnt have much power but it is very important. The House of Commons makes laws about the policy of the country, taxes and other things. The members of the House of Lords are not elected. These members are permanent. The members of the House of Commons are elected. The British people elect 650 members of the House of Commons every five years Questions

Buckingham Palace The queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace. It is a wonderful building with a monument in front of it witch is the Queen Victoria Memorial. Plan

BIG BEN The large clock in one the towers is Big Ben. Big Ben is the name of clock and the bell of the clock tower of the House of Parliament. You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben. So people know the clock as Big Ben.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE The centre of London is Trafalgar Square. In the middle of the square stands a tall monument. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. There are in front of National Gallery which is one of the best picture galleries of the world.

ST. PAUL`S CATHEDRAL One of the greatest churches is St. Pauls Cathedral, is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren build it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took Sir Christopher Wren 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world.
