What does the word Christmas mean? The word Christmas is taken from Christs Mass or, in the original Latin, Cristes maesse. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on this day.

The Christmas story comes from the Bible. An Angel appeared to shepherds and told them that a Savior had been born to Mary and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem.

The Wise Men (the Magi) followed a star until it led them to Jesus. The Wise Men gave Jesus many gifts. So it is a tradition to give presents on Christmas Day. Another tradition is to put a star on the top of Christmas Tree.

Traditionally people sing Christmas songs on this day. They are called carols.

Is Christmas only a religious holiday? Certainly, for practicing Christians around the world, Christmas is one the most important holiday of the year. However, in modern times traditional Christmas festivities have become much less related to the Christ story. Examples of these other traditions include: Santa Claus, Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer and others.

Why is Christmas so important? There are two reasons: There are approximately 1.8 billion Christians in a total world population of 5.5 billion, making it the largest religion worldwide. Christmas is the most important shopping event of the year. It is claimed that up to 70 percent of many merchants annual revenue is made during the Christmas season.It is interesting to note that this emphasis on spending is relatively modern.

Why is there a Christmas Tree? This tradition was begun in Germany. German immigrants moving to England and the USA brought this popular tradition with them and it has since become a much loved tradition for all.

People buy and decorate the Christmas tree. They decorate it with toys, candles, balls, lights, garlands and put a golden star on the top.

All houses are beautifully decorated. Holly and mistletoe are used to decorate the house. They put branches of holly and mistletoe over the doors.

Every English family sends and receives many Christmas Cards. You can read on the card “MERRY CHRISTMAS”

Santa Claus comes into children’s homes on Christmas Eve. He is always merry. He comes from the North Pole. He brings presents for all the children.

Santa Claus travels on a sleigh pulled by deer that can fly. The well-know image of Santa Claus was invented by Coca-Cola. The name ‘Santa Claus’ comes from the Dutch Sinter Klaus, short for Sinter Nicholas or Saint Nicholas.

Christmas Traditions On Christmas Eve children hang their Christmas stockings on their beds or near fire place. A Christmas stocking is not a real stoking. It is big and beautifully decorated. Children put their Christmas stockings on their beds or near the mantelpiece. Children believe that Santa Claus will come down the chimney and fill the stockings with presents. A carrot for the deer is usually left on the mantelpiece.

Why do people give gifts on Christmas day? This tradition most probably is based on the story of the three wise men (the Magi) giving gifts of gold, incense and myrrh following the birth of Jesus. However, it is important to note that gift giving has only become popular in the last 100 years as figures such as Santa Claus have come to be more important, and emphasis has been shifted to giving gifts to children.
