London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. It is situated upon both banks of the River Thames. It is the largest city in Britain and one of the largest in the world. Its population is about 7 million people.

London Bridge For more than 600 years it had been only bridge across the river Thames.

The Tower of London was founded in the 11th century. It was a fortress, it was a palace, it was a prison and even a royal Zoo!

The Bloody Tower (кровавая башня)was used as prison.Many men,women, and children died there.

St. Pauls Cathedral. (Собор Святого Павла) The interior of the Cathedral is very beautiful.

The Houses of Parliament (парламент), or the Palace of Westminster. (Вестминстерский дворец) has the 320 feet high tower.

There is the Big Ben (a famous bell) on the top of the tower.

The Westminster Abbey(Вестминстерское аббатство) is a Gothic building, which stands opposite the Houses of Parliament. The oldest part of the building dates from the eighth century.

Buckingham Palace (Букингемский дворец)has been a home for seven generations of British kings and queens and is the symbol of the monarch.

Trafalgar Square(Трафальгарская площадь). There is the Nelson Column(Нельсоновская колонна)in the centre – the national monument dedicated to the victory over Napoleon.

The Tate Gallery contains a unique collection of British paintings of Henry Matisse, Pablo Picasso,and Salvador Daly and other famous painters.
