Roald Amundsen was born near Oslo in Norway in 1872. He showed his interest in exploring when he was young: at the age of 15, instead of studying medicine he left school to go to sea, and when he was 27 he made his first visit to the Arctic. Over the years he made several visits there and learnt important survival techniques from local people, like working with sled dogs and wearing the right kind of clothes against the cold.

Later he made plans to reach the South Pole in the Antarctic. But he kept the plans a secret because he didn't want other explorers to get there before him.

He arrived in Antarctica in his ship, Fram, in January 1911 and for ten months he and his team got ready for their big trip. Then, on October 20th, 1911, he and four other men started their journey to the Pole. They reached it together on 14th December, 1911, 35 days before the British explorer, Robert Scott, and his team. Amundsen's group were the first people ever to go to the South Pole. They then returned safely to their ship. Amundsen's excellent equipment, planning and use of dogs made his trip a great success.

Later he continued exploring the Arctic, first by ship then by plane. And in 1926, he and his team were the first people to reach the North Pole. In 1928, Amundsen flew to the North Pole to rescue some explorers but he never returned. It seems that he died when his plane crashed.
