Тема: American Symbols

Цель: формировать у учащихся навыки чтения, монологической речи, подготовить учащихся к успешной сдаче устной части ЕГЭ по английскому языку.

Оборудование: компьютер, диктофон.

Ход выполнения заданий


1. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.


American Symbols

There are many symbols that represent the United States of America. Some of the most popular ones are the Stars and Stripes (the ), the , the (our national bird), the , the , the US Capitol, the , Independence Hall, the , the (a gift from France) and so on. The American flag is often called "The Stars and Stripes", it is also called "Old Glory". It represents the growth of the nation. It has 13 horizontal stripes,7 red and 6 white which stand for the original 13 states. In the top left hand corner there are 50 white stars on a blue background: one star for each state. The national anthem of the United States is "The Star Spangled Banner".

The eagle became the national emblem of the country in 1782. It has an olive branch (a symbol of peace) and arrows (a symbol of strength). You can see the eagle on the back of a dollar bill.

The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of American democracy. It stands on Liberty Island in New York. It is one of the first things people see when they arrive in New York by sea. This National Monument was a present from France to the USA. France gave the statue to America in 1884 as a symbol of friendship. Liberty carries the torch of freedom - in her right hand. In her left hand she is holding a tablet with the inscription "July 4, 1776" - American Independence Day.


2. Study the menu prospect

You are going to visit the agency and now you are calling to find out more information. In 1.5 minutes, you are to ask five direct questions to find out the following:

  1. Name of the café

  2. Price, vegetable burger

  3. Dishes available

  4. Offers

  5. Drinks available

You have 20 seconds to ask each question.


3. Imagine that you are preparing a report for your classmates about your visit to New York. You have some photos to describe and talk about.

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes.

4. Study two photographs. In 1.5 minutes, be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

•give a brief description of the photos

•say what the pictures have in common

•say in what way the pictures are different

•say which picture do you like more, explain why.

•explain why

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously.
