THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
The USA is one of the largest countries in the world. It is situated in the central part of the North American continent. The area of the USA is over nine million square kilometers. Its oceans are the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic.
The population of the United States is nearly 290 million people.
The official language of the country is English. The capital of the country is Washington. It was named in honour of the first President, George Washington. As the USA is a large country, the climate is different in different region s.
There are many mountains in the USA. For example, the highest peak in the Cordilliers in the USA is 4,418 metres.
The country's main river is the Mississippi but there are many other great rivers in the USA: the Colorado in the south and the Columbia in the north-west. There are five Great Lakes between the USA and Canada.
There are many big cities in the country. They are Washington, New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
The USA is a federal republic, consisting of fifty states. Each of these states has its own government.
The president is the head of the state and the government.

The discovery of America.
In our days everybody knows what the "America" means. First of all it is the name of the country - the United States of America - or just America. And then America is the name of the two continents - North America and South America. These two continents, North and South America, form the part of the world called America.
Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492.
We don't know much about the man. He was born in Italy but lived in Spain for a ling time. He was a seaman and made many sea voyages. In 1492 the King and Queen of Spain gave him money to go to India. He decided to sail west as he was sure that our planet was round. And after sailing 4000 miles (6400 kilometres), he reached some land. Columbus thought that it must be India but it was not. It was a new land - a new continent. It was America - Central America in fact. People began to speak about the land as "the New World".

Amerigo Vespucci
Amerigo Vespucci was born in Italy in 1454. He was in Spain during Columbus' voyages. During some years he made several voyages. In 1497 Amerigo Vespucci
explored the South American coast. It made him to be the first European to land on the American continent. That's why the continent was called America. He died in 1512.
