The theme of the lesson National Food

The objectives of the lesson 1. Develop students' speaking, reading

and listening skills.

2. Involve students in the process of

discussion, stimulate their logical

thinking.

3.Practice students in pair work,

develop communicative approach

in speaking.

Equipment Pupils' books, proverbs about food,

wisdom quotes, a song "I like food",

pictures about food, cassette recorder.

Procedure

I. Introduction

1. T. Good morning, children! I'm glad to see you. I hope you are in good mood and ready for the lesson. Today we are going to speak about food, its role in the life of people, about useful and harmful food and other things connected with food. As one old man said: "One cannot think well, love well and sleep well, if one hasn't dined well." And it is really so. It's a fact.

II. Warming up.

Listening to a song "I like food"

II. Main part

1.T. The teacher suggests pupils to look at the blackboard and comment the following expression: "There is no love sincerer than the love of food."

"A hungry man is an angry man"

2. Pupils' information about the role of food in people's lives.

For human being food is a critical contributor to physical well-being. It is a major source of pleasure, worry and stress. We can't but mention the importance of food as a positive force in life. We may associate certain foods with a holiday, past event or specific memory. Eating and food, however, we also have symbolic

1

meanings associated with love, sensuality, comfort, stress reduction, security, reward, and power. All of us have turned to food at one time or another for comfort, to help us cope with stressful experiences, to control our emotions, and to satisfy desires. Food choices, while influenced by taste and nutritional value, are also typically influenced by past experiences, many of which are social in nature.

There are many roles food could play in our social lives. Food can unite people for special events and occasions, such as holidays and get together. Food also helps strengthen family relations and makes you feel close to other members during so-called "family suppers" or Sunday meal, when "Worries go down better with soup."

Food can help comfort and unite people together in holidays and special events.

We are what we eat" is an old proverb. Our nutritional status, health, physical and mental faculties depend on the food we eat and how we eat it. Every living thing on the face of the earth needs food. They say "Tell me what you eat, I'll tell you who you are."

It is a biologically known fact, that food is something without which growth, development and evolution would have been impossible. Food is the basic need of human life. A human or any living thing can live without any luxioury of life but theу can not survive without food.

Food helps individual de-stress and regain their mental equilibrium. It helps us feel better and even solve different problems. Moreover food is the natural medicine. "The body becomes what the food is, the spirit becomes what the thoughts are."

Healthy food is food considered to be beneficial to health in ways that go beyond a normal healthy diet required for human nutrition. Because there is no precise, authoritative definition from regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, different dietary practices can be considered healthy depending on context.

Foods considered "healthy" may be natural foods, organic foods, whole foods, and sometimes dietary supplements. Such products are sold in health food stores or in the health/organic sections of supermarkets. "Health food" may also refer to functional food that designed to address specific health concerns, such as the prevention of disease.

Healthy eating is important to good health.Nutritious foods nourish your body and

give you energy to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. Eating the right foods can also

help reduce your risk of nutrition - related diseases, like heart disease, diabetes and

cancer.

2

3. Discussing "Fast food."

T. But "health food" is sometimes used in contrast with "junk food" that is "fast food", which may be high in calories but has little other nutritional value. As far as I know, fast food is popular among teenagers. However, many experts consider fast food harmful to our health. What's your opinion? What kind of food do you prefer? In today's fast moving world people have less and less time to spend on eating or cooking. That's why fast food is popular, especially among teenagers .However, there a lot of people who consider fast food can do harm to our health. Are they right?

P1.In my opinion, fast food is very convenient because you don't have to wait for a long time until your food is prepared. In addition, it is rather cheap, which is very important for teens that usually do not have much pocket money. What is more, junk food such as pizzas, burgers, chocolate bars are tasty and lots of teens like it.

P2.Nevertheless, some researchers suggest fast food is not nutritious because it is high in fat which is believed to be one of the major causes of obesity, cancer, heart or liver diseases. Moreover, fast food may be addictive. Teens turn down home-made meals and grab junk food instead. They cannot live without chips or fries, burgers or hot dogs. Personally, I think not all junk food is bad for our health. Some vegetable pizzas, for example, are high in vital nutrients and low in fat

P3.I agree that if you eat too much fast food you are likely to gain weight because it is less satisfying than healthier food. Besides, weight gained in adolescence is extremely hard to lose. If you want to have a slim figure and a glowing skin, you should limit the amount of junk food.

P4.For many families that go to fast food restaurants only for children's parties or special occasions fast food restaurants cannot be held responsible for unhealthy diets. In fact they are excellent places for families to go to. It is clear that fast food restaurants are having a terrible effect on our cities and towns. It is impossible to go info the city centre without seeing rubbish from fast food restaurants every - where. The main problem is that they use too much packaging and people just throw this in the streets.

P5.There is some truth in the statement that fast food restaurants are bad for society. If people only go to fast food restaurants, then traditional restaurants might close. This is because they have more expensive prices and because people prefer fast food. It is important that people eat in both fast food restaurants and restaurants which serve their national cuisine. It depends on what is meant by society.

P6.Fast food restaurants are very important for young people. There are not many

3

places where they can go out with their friends. It seems to me that fast food restaurants are having a negative effect on society. When people start eating fast food, they get used to eating lots of sugar and salt. This results in people changing their diets and eating with more salt and sugar at home; which is very unhealthy.

P7.The most important loss we suffer due to these fast foods is quality. These fast foods are lower in nutritional value and contain less minerals and vitamins. Further they have high calories that result in weight gain and that in turn leads to heart diseases and other problems. Further, they have added flavors, colors and preservatives that are not always very helpful to our health.

P8.These preserved foods have also taken away the natural taste and benefits of fresh foods from our lives. We now depend upon artificial flavorings to make a fish taste like a fish. However we cannot get the natural taste of fresh foods from preserved foods

P9.We have lost the fun of cooking because of these fast foods. Cooking used to be an art and people enjoyed cooking and the satisfactions they got by cooking a tasty meal. Further, cooking is the time when family members gathered and enjoyed their time together. However with less time devoted to cooking, the chances for such meals are now rare.

P10.All these illustrations point out that although fast foods and preserved foods are unavoidable in our busy world, we must not totally neglect the advantages of fresh foods. We must sometimes take time with our families to prepare a delicious meal and enjoy it together with the ones we love the most.

T.Really, food tastes better when you eat it with your family but teens like to spend their free time in the company of their friends and very often they choose such cafes as "McDonalds." Naturally, they put on weight.

4. Listening to the text "Obesity"

5. Role- play "Interview with a guest"

T. I'd like to introduce our guest Mr. White a nutritionist and ask him to comment on various aspects related to this topic. Ask him questions.

P1. I'm hearing a lot about junk food lately. No one has given a definition of what foods are junk. Can you give me a list of junk foods?

N. Junk food is a slang word for foods with limited nutritional value. Every person has their own list of foods that they call junk foods. I would include foods that are

4

high in salt, sugar, fat or calories and low nutrient content. Salted snack foods, candy, gum, most sweet desserts, fried fast food and carbonated beverages are some of the major junk foods. They taste good but are high in calories. Generally, they offer little in terms of protein, vitamins or minerals and lots of calories from sugar or fat. The term "empty calories" reflects the lack of nutrients.

P2. How does publicity influence people into buying junk food?

N.Yes, publicity does influence people's food purchases. But what kinds of foods are advertised? Watch your local television stations. What kinds of foods are advertised? Include the number of foods that are advertised in your report. How many high fat or high sugar foods were advertised? How many basic foods (milk, bread, fruit, vegetables, meat) were advertised during the same shows? It is usually high sugar or high fat foods. Milk, fruit and some cereal commercials are aired, but not as often as junk foods. Is it the same in all countries.

P3.Can you give any advice about what to eat?

N. The advice I always give is:

- never eat snacks between meals.

- stop fighting with yourself.

-eat 5-6 times a day;

- don't eat after 6 p.m.

- drink a lot of water before and after meals. Don't drink fizzy drinks.

- green tea is very useful.

In some time your organism will be in good physical shape. Nevertheless, eat everything but in moderation. Moderation in everything is a "gold rule." And, of course, everyone should keep to a balanced diet.

P4. Do you think diets are a good way to lose weight?

N. Your weight is a balancing act, but the equation is simple: If you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight. And if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you lose weight. But there's a better way! You can lose weight without feeling miserable. By making smart choices every day, you can develop new eating habits and preferences that will leave you feeling satisfied-and winning the battle of the bulge.

P5. Have you ever gone on a diet?

N. To be honest, I went on a diet once and I lost about 5 kilos, but after some time

later I gained weight again. So, I decided to give preferences to healthy food, vegetables and fruits.

5

T. Thank you for the information. Your comments were useful and necessary.

6.Speaking.

T. Well, you know that different countries have different food and no wonder that they have different meals, different customs and traditions connected with meals.

What can you tell us about them?

(Pupils tell about the Welsh, Scottish, English and Ukrainian cuisines.)

7.Tastes and preferences in eating

T. As you see, all these cuisines are different as cheese and chalk and everyone has his or her preferences in food. Suppose you have them as well, are you? What are they?

P1.I prefer homemade meals. My Granny and Mum are excellent cooks. They have

a lot of their own receipts as they are creative in cooking. I am crazy about their

meals, especially Ukrainian ones such as: varenyky, pampushki, pancakes, which

are tasty, delicious and unusual.

P2. As for me, I give preference to Ukrainian meals too. I adore borsch. I can't do

without it. I think it is the best choice in the world. It is useful, full of vitamins,

tasty, smells well and makes me full during the day, because it contains more than 20 components in it

P3. Frankly speaking I consider hamburgers and pizza the best. The thing is that I love Italian cuisine. I always buy them in our school canteen or in the nearest snack bar. My Mum says they are harmful and doesn't cook them at home. But I can't imagine even a day without them.

P4. If you ask me about my preferences, I'd mention fruits and vegetables. The matter is that I am a vegetarian and different salads made of them attract me much more. I enjoy eating them because they are useful for my health, give me a lot of energy and there is no need to worry about obesity.

P5. In my opinion there is nothing better than meat. I'm sure it is the food for real men. My Dad goes in for hunting and meat is on the menu every day in my family.

Meat is nourishing, nutritious and with a good side dish it's great.

P6. Personally for me, dairy products are preferable. I like milk, yogurt, cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese. In combination with fruits they are fantastic. Moreover

they make us younger, healthier and more active.

P7.My point of view is: it doesn't matter what you eat. when I am hungry I eat

6

everything I can find in the fridge. Hunger doesn't choose.

P8. As for me I am a lover of different meals: I like Italian pasta and pizza, Japanese sushi, Russian pelmeni, and Ukrainian borsch. No, matter which cuisine it is every country has a lot of tasty things.

8. Table manners.

T. It's quite natural that people eat not only at home, but from time to time they go to restaurants and cafes. Do you think it's necessary to know table manners? Which of them should we observe?

(Pupils' answers)

  • Never stretch over the table for something you want, ask your neighbour to pass it.

  • Take a slice of bread from the bread-plate by hand; don't harpoon your bread with a fork.

  • Never read while reading (at least in company).

  • Cut your meat into small pieces that can be chewed with ease. Cut off one piece at a time.

  • Sit facing the table, don't sit sideways. keep your feet under you; don't stretch them all the way under the table.

  • Don't use a spoon for what can be eaten with a fork.

  • Try to make as little noise as possible when eating.

  • Don't talk with your mouth full. First chew and then swallow.

  • If your food is too hot, don't blow it as though you were trying to start a campfire on a damp night.

  • When eating stewed fruit use your spoon to put your stones on your saucer.

  • Don't bite into the whole slice; break it off piece by piece.

  • Don't shovel food into your mouth. take small maneuverable pieces.

  • Don't eat off the knife.

9. Checking homework (Pupils' dialogues "In the café")

Work in pairs.

10. Reading.

T. Tastes differ. Different people give preference to different food. But there is a

special category of people who are called vegetarians. What are they like?

a) -Pre-reading activity.

Answer the questions

Have you ever heard of vegetarians?

7

What is your opinion about people who do not eat meat?

Have you ever tried to live without meat?

Ukrainian cuisine.

First thing you should know about Ukrainian cuisine is that Ukrainians are very hospitable and generous when it comes to feeding their guests. Moreover, Ukrainian ladies love and know how to cook. So, the first of our Ukraine dating tips is to be prepared to eat much and try not to refuse a second helping of anything when you are invited to dinner over to your fiancée's home. Otherwise, she and her family (especially her mother) might think you shun their hospitality and dislike their food (and efforts put towards cooking it).

You should know that Ukrainian cuisine includes some very tasty dishes along with some more exotic ones. Among the most traditional Ukrainian dishes there are Borsch (beet soup), Vareniki (sort of Ravioli), Nalisniki (pancakes), Golubsti (cabbage rolls) and salo with garlic (Pig's fat). Some of these you may like, while others you may hate. So, another one of the Ukraine dating tips is to think out some nice explanation as to why you do not want to eat or even taste some of the food offered to you.

Make it something nice and believable. In the US or in most European countries people do not eat pig's fat. You might feel sick even thinking of eating something like that, but it is no good telling so to your fiancee's family. So, think out ahead of time some reputable reason why you deny their refreshments.

The national cuisine reflects the richness of traditions and folkways of Ukrainian people.

The most popular and well-known Ukrainian dish is surely borsch, an aromatic and appetizing cabbage-soup of some 20 ingredients. It may be cooked with beef, chicken or pork, baked beets, beans and mushrooms. Borsch is served as the main course with pampushki, soft rolls soaked in garlic.

Traditional in the Ukrainian menu are varenyky, a type of boiled dumplings with various fillings (cherries, strawberries, fried mushrooms, curd, chopped liver, etc.) and golubtsy - cabbage rolls stuffed with minced meat.

Ukrainian cuisine has a variety of dairy meal as well as sweet pastry, including doughnuts, cakes and other cookies. The proud of Ukrainian people is wheat bread, sweet-smelling and light.

If you have an occasion to be at the Ukrainian home, you will be charmed by the sincere warmth of hosts and homemade food.
