The aims of the lesson:

1. to give some information about the role of TV in our life, its advantages and disadvantages; 2. to enrich students Vocabulary; to teach them to work creatively; 3. developing unprepared monological and dialogical speech using new lexis;

The Procedure of the lesson:

  1. Organization moment: Greetings. T: Good morning, pupils! P: Good morning, teacher! T:I am glad to see you. P: We are glad to see you too. T: Sit down, please. Today we have an unusual lesson. We will speak today about TV and its role in our life.

b)Warm up.

Students pronounce the poem. "Are you a coach potato?"

Do you like to swim ?

Do you like to ski?

No , I don t like to swim

No , I don t like to ski.

I am coach potato

I like TV.

  1. Brainstorming.

Teacher′s questions:

1. What can TV do?

2. Can it be entertaining?

3. Can it be amusing?

4. Some people say that TV kills conversation. Does it?

5. Is TV bad for people's eyes? V. Test " Are you a coach potato? TV quiz.

Answer these questions with «yes» or «no». For «yes» you'll get two points, for «no» - one point.

1.Do you have 'watching television' on the top of your list of hobbies?

2.Do you get offended, if someone refers to television as 'an idiot box'?

3.You do not remember birthdays and anniversaries, but remember the entire month's TV schedule.

If your score is 10-12 points.

You are not in love with your TV set . It is good that you do not watch TV so much. Keep TV watching to a minimum, and enjoy life. That is the way to go.

If your score is 13-20 points

You are in love with your TV set. You are in love with your television set. Your favorite pastime is watching TV shows. Yes, you are a couch potato. We would suggest - switch off the TV set for a while, and explore the outdoors and socialize more.

Watching TV is one of the great British pastimes! Broadcasting in the UK is controlled by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA).

The BBC receives its income from the government, but the private companies controlled by the IBA earn money from advertising.

The BBC has two channels. BBC 2 has more serious programmes and news features.

The IBA is responsible for looking after the regional independent TV companies that broadcast their own programmes and those they have bought from other regions. There is a break for advertisements about every 15-20 minutes.

New technology has made it possible for viewers, to receive many more programmes into their homes through satellite TV. The 1990s may well see many changes in British TV and radio.

V. Work with Vocabulary. Match two words to make a common collocations.

VIII. Speaking . TV is our friend or enemy? ( Teacher divide students in groups. Students work and discuss this question in form of debates.

1st group

  • Television makes people argue and discuss things, think and talk more.

  • Children's and student's educational programmers are very useful.

  • TV programmers must be various.

  • With the help of TV we can get new information.

2nd group

  • Television is a terrible waste of time.

  • Too much television is bad for children- unhealthy.

  • Television may be cause of many disputes and conflicts in the family.

  • TV is going to kill the theatre.

IX. Reflexia. Questions.

  1. What is your favourite types of programmes?

  2. How many hours of TV do you watch every day?

  3. What would you do without TV?

  4. Is TV in your country any good?

  5. How many channels have you got in your country?

  6. What are the advantages and disadvantages of watching TV?


X. Conclusion. Assessment.

Teacher evaluates the students observing them during the whole lesson.

XI. Hometask. Take an interview by your family′s members making questions about TV and its role in your family.
