Scene I

Storyteller. Once upon a time, a very long time ago now, about last Friday, Winnie-The-Pooh lived in a forest all by himself. Do you know Winnie-the-Pooh? He is a small bear who likes honey. Allan Milne wrote about him and his friends. Pooh has got a lot of friends: Piglet, Donkey and Owl. One day when he was out walking, he met his friend Eeyore.

Storyteller. Hello, Eeyore. Nice weather, isn't it?

Eeyore. Pathetic. That's what it is. Pathetic.

Storyteller. Why, Eeyore?

Eeyore .(turns the other side and looks again). As I thought, no better from this side. But nobody minds. Nobody cares. Pathetic, that's ' what it is.

(Enter Winnie-the-Pooh)

Winnie-the-Pooh. Good morning, Eeyore.

Eeyore. Good morning, Pooh Bear. If it is a good morning ,which I doubt.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Why, what's the matter?

Eeyore. Nothing, Pooh Bear, nothing. We can't all and some of us don't. That's all there is to it.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Can't all what?

Eeyore. Joy. Song-and-dance.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Oh!

Eeyore. (sings). Umty-tiddly, umty-to.

Winnie-the-Pooh (begins to move to the rhythm). Umty-tiddly, umty-to.

Eeyore. Enjoy yourself.

Winnie-the-Pooh. I'm.

Eeyore. Some can.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Why, what's the matter?

Eeyore. Is anything the matter?

Winnie-the-Pooh. You seem so sad, Eeyore.

Eeyore. Sad? Why should I be sad? It's my birthday. The happiest day of the year.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Your birthday?

Eeyore. Of course, it is. Can't you see? Look at all the presents I've had. Look at the birthday cake. Candles and pink sugar.

Winnie-the-Pooh (looks first to the right, then to the left). Presents? Birthday cake? Where?

Eeyore. Can't you see them?

Winnie-the-Pooh. No.

Eeyore. Neither can I. Joke. Ha, ha!

Winnie-the-Pooh. But is it really your birthday?

Eeyore. It is.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Oh, well, many happy returns of the day, Eeyore.

Eeyore. And many happy returns to you, Pooh Bear.

Winnie-tlie-Pooh. But it isn't my birthday.

Eeyore. No, it's mine.

Winnie-the-Pooh (exclaiming). Stay there! Runs away.

Storyteller. Winnie-the-Pooh feels he must get Eeyore a present of some sort at once. He could always think of a proper one afterwards. So he runs home and meets Piglet there.

Scene II

(Pooh's House. Enter Piglet. He goes to the door of the Pooh's house and tries to reach the knocker. Enter Winnie-the-Pooh)

Winnie-the-Pooh. Hello, Piglet.

Piglet. Hello, Pooh.

Winnie-the-Pooh. What are you trying to do?

Piglet. I was trying to reach the knocker.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Let me do it for you. (Knocks.) I have just seen Eeyore, and poor Eeyore is in a very sad condition, because it's his birthday (knocks), and nobody has taken any notice of it (knocks again), and he is very sad... you know what Eeyore is... (knocks) and there he was and... What a long time whoever lives here is answering this door!

Piglet. But Pooh, it's your own house!

Winnie-the-Pooh. Oh, so it is. Well, let's go in.

(They enter the house. There is a small table with some pots, mostly empty. Winnie-the-Pooh goes to the table and chooses a pot full of honey.)

Winnie-the-Pooh. I'm giving this to Eeyore as a present. What are you going to give?

Piglet. Couldn't I give it too ,from both of us?

Winnie-the-Pooh. No. That would not be a good plan.

Piglet. All right, then, I'll give him a balloon. I've got one. I'll go and get it now, shall I?

Winnie-the-Pooh. That, Piglet, is a very good idea. Nobody can be unhappy with a balloon.

(Piglet leaves)

Storyteller. Piglet runs for the balloon. It is his present. And Winnie-the-Pooh carries his pot to Eeyore.

Winnie-the-Pooh (thoughtfully). I wonder if it is time for a little something. (To Storyteller.) By the way, have you got the time?

Storyteller. It's half past twelve.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Dear, dear. Ididn't know it was as late as that.

Storyteller. Late for what?

Winnie-the-Pooh. For a little something. (Produces a big spoon from his pocket.) Luckily I brought this with me. (Begins to eat honey.) (Pause. Starts singing a song after he lias emptied the pot.) Now let me see, where was I going? Ah, yes, Eeyore. (Remembering.) Oh, Eeyore! Bother! What shall I do? I must give him something. Shall I give him this? (Points at the newspaper.)

Storyteller. No. That, Pooh Bear, wouldn't be a good plan. Think hard. Eeyore is waiting.

Winnie-the-Pooh (scratching his head). Well, it's a very nice pot,
even if there is no honey in it. Eeyore could keep things in it,
which might be useful.

(Leaves with the pot)

Storyteller. Now Winnie-the-Pooh is going to Owl's House. Owl
is very wise. She is the only one who can help Winnie-the-Pooh.

Scene III

(Owl's House. Owl is sitting in an armchair at the table. There are pens and scrolls of paper on the table. Enter Winnie-the-Pooh)

Winnie-the-Pooh. Good morning, Owl.

Owl. Good morning, Pooh.

Winnie-the-Pooh. Many happy returns of Eeyore's birthday.

Owl. Oh, is that what it is?

Winnie-the-Pooh. What are you giving him, Owl?

Owl. What are you giving him, Pooh?

Winnie-the-Pooh. I'm giving him a useful pot to keep things in, and I wanted to ask you...

Owl .(interrupting and taking the pot out of Pooh's hands). Is this it?

Winnie-the-Pooh. Yes, and I wanted to ask you...

Owl (interrupting again and smelling the pot). Somebody has been keeping honey in it.

Winnie-the-Pooh. You can keep anything in it. It's very useful. And I wanted to ask you...

Owl .(interrupting). You ought to write "A Happy Birthday" on it.

Winnie-the-Pooh. That was what I wanted to ask you. Because my spelling is wobbly. It's a good spelling, but the letters get in the wrong places. Would you write "A Happy Birthday" on it for me?

Owl. It's a nice pot. (Looking at it all around.) Couldn't I give it too? From both of us?

Winnie-the-Pooh (evasively). No. That would not be a good plan. (Promptly.) I am in a hurry, you know. Eeyore is waiting.

Owl (takes a scroll of paper and begins to lick the end of her pencil wondering how to spell 'birthday"). All right.

Owl. I'm just saying: "A Happy Birthday".

(Unfolds the scroll and shows it to Winnie-the-Pooh. The inscription says: HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH BTHUTHDY)

Winnie-the-Pooh (impressed). What a good spelling!

Winnie-the-Pooh. Thank you, Owl. Eeyore will like it very much. (Takes the scroll and leaves.)

Storyteller. Winnie-the-Pooh goes to Eeyore. But there is a little Piglet who wants to be the first. He doesn't wait for Pooh. He always wants to be the first.

Piglet (running with a balloon in his hand). Quicker! Quicker!

Storyteller. Not so fast, Piglet. (The balloon bursts.)

Piglet (covering his ears with his hands and looking down). Well, even if I'm on the moon, I needn't be face downwards all the lime. (Raising his head.) That's funny. I wonder what that bang was.

Storyteller. What bang?

Piglet. That bang. I couldn't have made such noise just myself. (Looking around in confusion.) And where is my balloon? And what's that small piece of damp rag doing? (Lifts it.) Oh, dear! (Crying.) Oh, dear, oh, dearie, dearie, dear!

Storyteller. Well, Piglet, that's the result of being in a hurry. What do you do now?

Piglet (sobbing). It's too late now.

(Leaves)

Scene IV

Setting. Eeyore's House. Eeyore is still looking at himself in the mirror.

( Enter Piglet)

Piglet. Good morning, Eeyore.

Eeyore. Good morning, little Piglet. If it is a good morning. Which I doubt. (Adds with a sigh.)

Piglet. Many happy returns of the day. Eeyore. Just say that again.

Piglet. Many hap...

Eeyore (interrupting him). Wait a moment. (Takes a speaking trumpet.) I can hear better. (Adjusts the trumpet.) Now then, what were you saying?

Piglet. Many happy returns of the day.

Eeyore. Meaning me?

Piglet. Of course, Eeyore.

Eeyore. My birthday?

Piglet. Yes.

Eeyore. Me having a real birthday?

Piglet. Yes, Eeyore, and I brought you a present.

Eeyore. I must have that in the other ear. (Replaces the trumpet.) Now then.

Piglet (into the trumpet). A present.

Eeyore. Meaning me again?

Piglet. Yes.

Eeyore. My birthday still?

Piglet. Of course, Eeyore.

Eeyore. Me going on having a real birthday?

Piglet. Yes, Eeyore, and I brought you a balloon.

Eeyore. (delighted). Balloon? You did say "balloon"? One of those big coloured things you blow up? Joy! Sing-and-dance! (Jumps several times.)

Piglet. Yes. But I'm afraid... I'm very sorry, Eeyore... when I was running to bring it to you ,I fell down.

Eeyore. Dear, dear, how unlucky! You ran too fast, I expect. You didn't hurt yourself, little Piglet?

Piglet. No, but I... I... oh, Eeyore, I burst the balloon!

Eeyore .(surprised). My balloon? (After a long pause. Sinking to a whisper.) My birthday balloon?

Piglet. Yes, Eeyore. Here it is. (Gives him.) With... with many happy returns of the day.

Eeyore. Is this it? (Pause.) My present? (Pause.) The balloon?

Piglet. Yes.

Eeyore. Thank you, Piglet but what colour was this (pointing at it) when it... when it was a balloon?

Piglet. Red.

Eeyore. (dreamily). I just wondered... Red... My favourite colour. How big was it?

Piglet. About as big as me.

Eeyore. I just wondered... About as big as Piglet... My favourite size. Well, well.

(Enter Winnie-the-Pooh)

Winnie-the-Pooh. Many happy returns of the day. I've brought you a little present.

Eeyore. I've had it.

Winnie-the-Pooh. It's a useful pot. Here it is. And it's got "A Very Happy Birthday with Love from Pooh" written on it. And it's for putting things in.

Eeyore. Why! I believe my balloon will just go into this pot!

Winnie-the-Pooh. Oh, no, Eeyore, balloons are much too big to
go into pots.

Eeyore. Not mine. Look, Pooh! (Puts his "balloon" into the pot.)

Winnie-the-Pooh (exclaiming). So it does! It goes in! (Eeyore takes the "balloon " out of the pot.)

Piglet (exclaiming). So it does! And it comes out!

Eeyore. Doesn't it? It goes in and out like anything.

Winnie-the-Pooh. I'm very glad, Eeyore.

Piglet. I'm very glad, Eeyore..

Eeyore (happily). It goes in! And it comes out!

Storyteller. The Sun is always shining. The Sky is always blue. The Rainbow is in the Sky. And there is always place for Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends in Fairy Tales.

(All participants sing the song)

The sun is shining brightly, on, the sun! And how nice to sit and not to run! No problems over there, no problems here, After eating sitting, oh, what fun!
