Dear friends and guests. Today we are going to continue our work on the topic "Biography", that we'll continue to speak about famous people of Britain and our country. I must say that your literature teacher will help us to do it perfectly well. As you know, literature is closely connected with English, especially when we speak about writers and their books. According to your home task, you know that the subject of today's lesson is Robert Burns, a famous Scottish poet and Kosta Khetagurov, the lyrical pride of our Republic. That's why you'll have an opportunity to practice your selves in reciting their poems in the original and in Russian. And it is literature that will help you to understand their life and work better.

Now the floor is given to your literature teacher

Т: You see, Robert Burns was really famous. But it is time to speak about his life and work. At home you had to prepare some facts from his biography. And I think you will recite some of his poems. Let's begin to speak about R. Burns according to the plan.

P1 - Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet was born on the 25th of January 1759 in an "Auld clay biggin" or cottage at Alloway about two miles south to Ayr.

P2 - His father, William Burns (or Burness) was a hard-working farmer with high ideals about human conduct. He knew the value of a good education and he wanted his children the best "schooling possible".

P3 - There were seven children in the family and Robert was the eldest. When he was six years old his father sent him to school to Alloway, but Robert's regular schooling was rather short. The teacher left and the poet's father taught his children himself. Reading, writing, arithmetic, English grammar, history, literature and a slight acquaintance of Latin and French - that was Robert's education.

P4 - The songs and the ballads of Scotland, which Robert knew so well had been sung to him by his mother. She lived long and enjoyed the growing fame of her poet son.

P5 - Robert Burns became a farmer too. At thirteen he was out in the fields all day helping his father; at fifteen he did most of the work on the farm. He studied nature closely and working in the fields, he sang. In his songs he spoke of what he saw, of the woods and the fields, and the valleys, of the deer and the skylark, of the farmer's poor cottage and the farmer's love for his lass.

T: I think, that Robert Burns's poem: «Был честный фермер мой отец…» (My father was an honest farmer) tells us the biography of the poet much better.

P7 - Really, life was hard for the family. Robert's father died in 1784 and to get some money young man published some of his poems. Six hundred copies of "Poems chiefly in the Scottish dialect" were printed in July 1786. Their success was complete, the edition was quickly sold out and Robert Burns became well-known and popular.

P8 - Then the poet went to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland to publish another edition. At first Robert burns warmly met, but soon the society of Edinburgh grew tired of him. The popular character of his poetry was foreign to their tastes. Robert Burns left Edinburgh and went to the Highlands.

T: I must say that his poem "Should auld acquaintance be forgot" reflects that period of his life.

P9 - Стихотворение "Should auld acquaintance be forgot"

P10 - In 1788 Robert Burns married Jean Armour. The poet devoted a lot of poems to his Bonnie Jean, such as "I love my Jean", "My Bonnie face", "Red rose".

Red rose".

P11 - In 1794 Robert Burns' family consisted of four boys and one girl. By 1796 his health became very poor and on the 21st of July 1796 the greatest poet of Scotland died. Robert Burns was buried in Dumfries.

T: Whenever we speak about Scotland, the name of Scotland's bard Robert Burns is always there, as the ever living, never dying symbol of that country, because his heart is always in the country.

P12 - Стихотворение "My heart's in the Highlands"

And I'd like to tell you that only such a beautiful country of mountains and lakes could bear such a great poet. I'll give you a text about Scotland, read it to yourselves, mark key-sentences and then try to discuss them using everyday phrases which express agreements and your opinion. Work in pairs and prove that Scotland is a beautiful country with rich traditions that Scotland is a beautiful country with rich traditions.

P1 - I think, Scotland is a beautiful country.

P2 - I am for it. It's a country of beautiful lakes and rivers, small towns and villages.

P1 - I must say, some Scottish lakes are very big.

P2 - I fully agree. On the sides of some lakes there are farms, which can only be reached by boat.

P1 - In my opinion, in Scotland men wear a traditional costume.

P2 - Just it. In Scotland men wear the kilt, a traditional costume.

P1 - To my mind, there are a lot of famous people in Scotland.

P2 - That goes without saying. Any country could be proud of such names as Walter Scott and Robert Burns.

P1 - I think, Scotland has the national emblem.

P2 - Yes, certainly. The Thistle is the national emblem of Scotland.

P1 - Frankly speaking, Scotland is a country with a rich cultural traditional.

P2 - Quite so. Edinburgh Festivals of Music and Drama has become the main event in cultural life of Scotland.

P1 - It stands to reason. Scotland has a national musical instrument. It is the bagpipe.

P2 - Really! People of Scotland are very proud of Highland Games. At the games they do such things like throwing the Hammer or tossing the caber.

1). As it has been mentioned, Scotland is as beautiful as our native republic with its mountains and rivers, forests and fields. So we may say that only in Ossetia such a great poet and artist as Kosta Khetagurov could be born. Let's start our talk about Khetagurov with the poem "At Khetagurov tomb" by Georgi Tsabolov to understand better the importance of Kosta to Ossetia.

4. T: Now I'll ask your literature teacher to tell us about Kosta Khetagurov's life and work. Be very attentive, because your next will be to render her report in English.

3). T: Now let's speak about Khetagurov in (Russian) English.

P: Kosta Khetagurov, a famous poet and artist of Ossetia. He was born in the village of Nar in 1859. He finished school there and then Kosta entered the Stavropol gymnasium. His favorite subjects were literature and drawing, that's why he entered the Petersburg Academy of Arts, but he didn't finish it, because he had no money. So he came back to Ossetia again. There he wrote his wonderful poems. In his poems Khetagurov described the beautiful nature of his native country, besides he spoke about difficult situation of his people. But Kosta was very ill, so he died in 1906 in the village of Novogeorgievsko-Ossetinskoe. People always remember his name. Parks, theaters and streets are named after Kosta.

4). T: I think, that Khetagurov's poems speak about the poet much better, so let's recite them in Russian and in the original, that is in the Ossetic language.

В горах я родился;

T: Now it is time to draw a conclusion. I'd like you to read these English proverbs and to tell which of them can characterize these famous people of Scotland and Ossetia. Try to find Russian equivalents to them and explain.

Deeds, not words.

Handsome is as handsome does.

Both Robert Burns and Kosta Khetagurov did everything possible to develop culture of their native country and so they have become the pride and the glory of their countries.

I must say, you worked hard to prepare for this lesson, you learned many interesting and useful things. You were active at the lesson and you recited poems well. Each pupil is given an excellent mark.

Your homework will be to prepare a report about any person, whose life is an example for you.
