The most important building in Great Britain is Buckingham Palace. It is an official residence of Her Majesty - the Queen and is the symbol of British Monarchy. It was built in1702-1705 by the architect William Winder for Duke Buckingham.

Nowadays Buckingham Palace looks more like a small town with a police station, post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sport clubs, a cinema and a swimming pool.

There are 600 rooms and 3 miles of red carpet there. About 700 people work in the Palace and two men work full-time to look after 300 clocks.

A: Why?

B: As you see it looks more like a small town with a police station, post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sport clubs, a cinema and a swimming pool.

A: I've heard that there are a lot of rooms in Buckingham Palace. Do you know how many rooms there are in it?

  1. Speaking activities. Говоріння.

T.: Let's continue our tour about London. Now Ann is our guide. She will show us the main places of interest. But she will ask you some questions about these places. I know that some pupils have found important information about these sights and made some slides they are going to show. Please, Ann, you are welcome.

Ann: Let's go round London. Now you can see Trafalgar Square. It is in the city centre and there you can see a lot of tourists. What else do you know about Trafalgar Square?

P.1: This famous square is so named in honor of Britain's great victory over the French and Spanish fleet at Cape Trafalgar in 1805. The tall monument in the middle of it is a monument to Admiral Nelson because the hero of this battle was Lord Horatio Nelson, admiral of the British fleet. The column is 185 feet high and a 17 foot statue of Nelson on top. He lost his eye in one battle, an arm - in another, leg - in the third and his life in Trafalgar. His laconic command "England expects every man to do his duty" is carved in the granite on one side of the pedestal.

Ann: Oh, it's a very interesting story. Admiral Nelson was a very brave man and he is well-known for his victory at Trafalgar and I think he deserved to have such a great monument. Now we are in Westminster. Here you can see the Houses of Parliament and famous Big Ben. What do you know about the symbol of Great Britain?

P.2: I know that the Palace of Westminster, known as the Houses of Parliament, is really huge. There are 1,000 rooms and 100 staircases in it. That's where the British Parliament seats. Everybody knows the Clock Tower with the biggest clock bell in Great Britain. It got its name after Sir Benjamin Hall, a very tall man, who was in charge of lifting the bell up. Can you imagine that the clock bell weighs 13,5 tones? You can hear the sound of the clock every hour. Very beautiful Westminster Bridge across the Thames leads to Big Ben.

Ann: I can say that the West End is spectacular place full of museums, theatres, clubs and shops. Now our bus transferred us to the business part of London. Banks and offices are located here. Yes, it's the City. Here you can see the Tower of London which is a museum now. Do you know what it was many years ago?

P.3: Yeah, I know that it was a prison where many people died. Black ravens had a lot of food near the walls of the Tower those days. Now they live outside the tower. The English look after them and feed the ravens. People believe that London will be rich while ravens live in the Tower. Also it was a fortress because the walls of the Tower are 5 meters thick. In the museum you can see many old guns. It was a castle where the Kings lived and even the King's Zoo. Do you that the Guards lock the big doors of the Tower for the night at 10 o'clock every evening.

Ann: It's very useful information. But do you know that the Tower is nine hundred years old? Thank you, students, for such helpful and interesting information.

  1. Relaxing minute.

T.: Now let's relax and sing a song "The Wheels on the Bus".

"The Wheels on the Bus"

The wheels on the bus go round and round,

The money on the box goes ching, ching, ching,

Listen to the text again and be ready to do tasks.

St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral is the most beautiful cathedral in Great Britain. Its story begins in 604 AD. It was probably a wooden structure and it was destroyed by the fire. That had happened several times during St. Paul's Cathedral's long history before Sir Christopher Wren, a famous architect, started rebuilding it on 21 June, 1675. An interesting thing happened then. Wren asked a laborer to bring him a stone so that he might mark the centre of the new cathedral.
