The Ancient Olympic Games.

The main purpose of the ancient Olympic Games was to honour the gods. The Olympic Games were held in honour the god Zeus. Since the Games had a religious component, a sacred truce of three months would be arranged around each Olympic Games.

In the first recorded Olympic Games, the only event was a single foot race. Starting in 724 BC, other races were added to the schedule, including a race while wearing armour. Other sports were also added, including boxing, wrestling and a combination of track and field and competitive sports called the pentathlon.

The ancient Olympic Games had some very different traditions compared with the Modern Olympic Games. Women were forbidden from competing and even from watching the Games. In addition, all competitors in the ancient Olympic Games competed in the nude.

The Olympic Games were not allowed to continue indefinitely. In 394 AD, the Emperor Theodosius banned the worship of the ancient gods, forcing everyone to convert to Christianity. Festivals honouring the old gods were abolished, so the Olympic Games came to the end. For 1500 years, the Olympic Games were largely forgotten.

T - Now let's see how you've understood this information. Mark and then say if the statements given to you are true or false.

Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada

This was the second time that Canada had hosted the winter Olympics, having been the host for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

The city of Vancouver, located on Canada's west coast, welcomed millions of spectators. That was the 21st Winter Olympic Games, with festivities that included the traditional parade of nations. Some 5,000 men and women from more than 80 countries competed in the games, hoping to win Olympic gold. Fifteen winter sports events were included in the 2010 Winter Olympics. The sports were: bobsleigh, skeleton, ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, short track speed skating and curling, freestyle, snowboarding and others.

The Olympic torch was also carried into the stadium to light a cauldron signaling the start of the event. It then traveled from Greece to Vancouver. The atmosphere of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies was amazing.

The games took place at several venues around Vancouver on Canada's western coast. Canada broke Winter Olympics record with 14 gold medals.

London was the first city to host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. Women's boxing was included into the programme for the first time.
