Hi! It's me again. There is plenty to do after school hours, particularly sport which I enjoy most. I love many sports but best of all football. Almost all my friends are in our football team. We train hard and we often play for the school in various regional youth tournaments. Our coach has taught us all rigid rules which must be strictly observed. The last game we played ended in a draw - 3:3. And though we know the famous Olympic quotation "The most important thing is not to win, but to take part", we all want to win some day.

I do sport every day. After school on Mondays I go running with my friends for about an hour. Then I go to the swimming pool. Swimming is an excellent way to keep fit. It makes your legs and body strong.

Pete, the greatest footballer of all time, is my idol in football.

Exercise2 Work in groups of 3 or 4. Make up 5 questions about Daniel's favourite sport. Be
ready to discuss them with other partners when you change over.

My sister suddenly fell ill. She had a high temperature and felt very bad. She had a splitting headache and a cough. We sent for our district doctor. The doctor came and asked my sister to strip to the waist. She examined her, felt her pulse and took her temperature. It was the flu. The doctor told my sister to keep to her bed and prescribed some medicine, mustard plasters and hot-water bottle to her feet. Then the doctor put down a slip for x-ray and blood examination. My sister followed the doctor's instructions and in ten days my sister felt much better. She went to the policlinic for a check up. The doctor said she had fully recovered.

Jane fell off the chair, hit her head on the floor, and knocked herself unconscious.

A. Steffi Graf, a famous tennis player, was born in Germany in 1969.
After turning professional at the age of 13, she won her first major

Future in the Past.

If the verb in the Main Clause is in the Past, the verbs in the Subordinate Clause must be in Future in the Past. The auxiliary verbs "should" and "would" are used to form Future in the Past. "Should" replaces "shall" and "would" replaces "will".

Examples:

  1. He knows that I shall come here again tomorrow. He knew that I should come here again the next day.

  2. She promises they will finish the work soon. She promised they would finish the work soon.

We know the words "the world around us" have many meanings. What do we think about when we use these words? The answer to this question may be that we think first of all about the Earth with it's people and nature. We see before us many things such as large lands and mountains, woods and rivers, blue or cloudy sky, the sun rising or setting on the Earth. We certainly think about living beings such as animals, birds and plants. We see the whole beautiful world before us.

We know there are many seas, lakes and rivers on the Earth. We also know that water is a source of life on the earth. People, animals, birds and other living beings are not able to live without water. Water is necessary for all living beings.

This text introduces you into the problem of environment. Some years ago this problem was* widely discussed in the newspapers, radio and TV programmes in many countries of the world. Now we also have the same problem before us.

Why does this problem worry the people of the world?

The environment as it is known is all living and non-living things that surround us. They are animals and birds, woods and forests, air and water, land and atmosphere. All this may be called natural living conditions and resources.

National resources such as minerals, oil, wood lands and water are widely used for purposes of home industry and agriculture. As a result the wide use of national recourses upsets the biological balance, pollutes air, water and soil. The people are faced with the problem of the pollution of environment. Now it is becoming clear as never before that our environment needs strong protection from harmful actions in home industry and agriculture. Most people understand that it is necessary to fight pollution of the environment. We all should try to do our best in order to make air. Forests and soil cleaner than before.

It concerns everyone who lives in our country. We know that the policy of our state in environment protection is to control air and water pollution but at the same time we think that it cannot be done without everyone's help

The Problem of Ecology

Many people are concerned about ecology today because it is of vital importance for humanity. Everybody is talking about pollution nowadays: land pollution, water pollution, air pollution. The things we eat, the places we live in and the air around us are made dirty and unhealthy by machines and factories. Pollution is the result of industrialization and it threatens everything living: plants, animals, people. It is dangerous for life..

Pollution deprives people of fresh air, clear water and healthy food. The examples are numerous: the waters of the Aral Sea are polluted and it became much less than some years ago, the Caspian sea becomes smaller too, people from Semey suffer from radioactivity.

International cooperation of scientists in enviromental protection has already begun its work. People demand to stop bomb testing and arms race. They want to protect their future.

Holidays

People in every country celebrate holidays. Although "holiday" means "holly day" most holidays in Great Britain are not religious but commemorative in nature and origin. There are only 6 public holidays a year in Great Britain, that is days on which people need not go in for work. They are: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Spring Bank Holiday and Late Summer Bank Holiday. In Scotland, the New Year's Day is also a public holiday.

Christmas

For many British families Christmas is the most important holiday. Christmas is celebrated in Great Britain on the 25-th of December. Christmas is a religious holiday and one of the happiest holidays of the year, because it is the day that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

People prepare for Christmas weeks before: they buy gifts for their families and friends, choose fur-trees and decorate them with ornaments, colored paper, holly and lights, different toys and candles. There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but perhaps the most important one is Christmas presents. Children wait for Santa Claus who comes to every house and brings presents. Going to bed children leave their stockings and shoes to receive presents the next morning. There are a lot of jokes and fun on Christmas day. Young people like to spend it together in good companies. Family members sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding and Christmas cake. Later in the afternoon they will watch the Queen on TV as she delivers her traditional message to the U.K. and the Commonwealth.

People wish each other a "Merry Christmas!"

Nauryz

Kazakhstan has many different customs and traditions. The most important Kazakh holiday of the year is "Nauryz" - the Kazakh New Year.

On March 22-nd people from smaller villages come to bigger cities. Families get together to help one another on consructing a "yurt" which is the traditional Kazakh home. Since the Kazakhs were originally nomadic people they had homes that could be easily set up and moved from one place to another. These yurts are made of long curved pieces of wood that are tied together and make the skeleton for this round house. Large pieces of felt are placed over the wood and rags are placed inside the yourt on the floor to keep warmth and protect from cold and rain.

If you enter a yurt on Nauryz you will see that it is decorated with beautiful Kazakh ornaments, rugs and blankets.

As a guest you will sit at a long low table and eat such Kazakh dishes as "karta" (round pieces of dried horse meat), "plov", "baursak", "besbarmak" ("five fingers - a dish which consists of noodles, onions and sheep's meat).

One day Hodja lost his donkey. While looking for it he seemed to be happy. When people saw him they couldn't figure out why he was so happy. When they asked him the reason, Hodja told them: "I'm happy because I wasn't riding the donkey when it got lost. If I had been, I'd be lost now, too!"

At the theatre

There are not many theatres in my town but they are all very popular with public. I am a theatre lover, too. As for me, I prefer drama to all other theatres, but I like opera and musical comedy, too.

I'll never forget my first visit to the Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I wanted to see the famous bailey "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky. We bought the tickets in advance and came to the theatre half an hour before the show.

At 7 sharp the perfomance began. From the first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The costumes were fine. The dancing and music were thrilling. The ballet seemed to me a fairy-tale. I had never seen anything more wonderful. My friend also enjoyed every minute of it. When the curtain fell at the end of the perfomance there came a storm of applause. It seemed that it would never end. The dancers received call after call. They were presented with large bouquets of flowers. We also applauded enthusiastically. The perfomance was a great success.

В английском языке есть специальное выражение для обозначения повторяющихся действий в прошлом, а также действий, характерных для какого-то лица в прошлом (см.Unit 3).

In the childhood my father used to take me for fishing.

My mother used to cook tasteful pies on my birthday.

Не следует путать выражения used to с другими структурами, в состав которых входит глагол to use.
