Introduction

My mother usually says me: "You should go to bed earlier, your sleeping would be better and you will have charming dreams. I was interested in what "the dreaming" is and what for do we dream? This theme is very topical for my classmates and for me because we have dreams almost every day but don't know why and what for.

So, the aim of my work is to study the meaning of the dreaming.

The goals of my work are:

  1. to find out and study the definition of the word "Dreaming";

  2. to study the reasons of dreaming;

  3. to collect information about nightmares and the most common scripts of dreaming;

  4. to carry out the research: to hold the survey among the students and teachers of the Gymnasium #3 and give the recommendation.

Methods of the research: survey, analytic investigation, synthesis

Chapter 1. The Mystery of Dreams

  1. The definition of the "Dreaming"

People usually answer this question: "What is a dream?" The dictionary defines this word as "a series of thoughts, images, and feelings that you experience when you are asleep". In other words dreams are imaginary sleeping visions.

  1. Reasons of dreaming

People spend one third of their lives asleep but they don't fully understand the purpose of dreams. Some people say that dreams are people's unconscious wishes that they are not allowed to express in real life. Some scientists think that dreams let us to solve problems, to create new ideas and to find answers to the most difficult questions. For example a famous Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleyev invented the periodic table after he had seen it in his dream.

Nowadays no one knows for sure why we dream. Scientists have theories about it, but they are still working to try to figure it out. So we make a list (based on scientist's works) of few different ideas about why we might have dreams.

  • To express deeply hidden worries, wishes, & fears.

  • To review the events of the day.

  • To store new memories into our brains, and connect them to old ones.

  • To exercise our brains at night.

  • To form our personality and attitudes.

  • To improve our mood.

  • To keep us from sleeping too deeply.

  • To forget old memories to make room for new ones.

  • To keep us from going insane.

  • For no good reason at all; just for fun!

  1. Types of dreams

Some of our dreams are very strange and don't make sense at all. When we sleep, some parts of our brain are active while others are not. The frontal lobes that control emotion and memory are active, but the parts that control logical thought are not active at all. Our dreams depend on our emotional state as well. That's why our dreams are very different.

  • When we are depressed, we usually have dreams which make our sleep worried.

  • The more we think about a person, the more likely we are to dream about him.

  • If we have a lot of problems, we will continue thinking about them while sleeping. That's why the Chinese say, 'What you think during the daytime you will dream at night'.

  • When we fear something, we may have a nightmare.

  1. Nightmares

Nightmare is a very upsetting or frightening dream. The dreamer may feel different emotions in a nightmare, such as anger, sadness or depression, but the most common feeling is fear.

The majority of children have nightmares between the ages of three or four and seven or eight. These nightmares are a part of normal development, and do not signal unusual problems. Nightmares are less common in adults, but they may have nightmares from time to time too. About 5-lO% have nightmares once a month or more frequently.

Some nightmares can be caused by physical conditions such as illness and fever. Many people have nightmares after traumatic event, such as surgery, the loss of a loved one or an accident. Other people experience nightmares when they are undergoing stress in their lives, such as difficulty on the job or with a loved one, moving, financial problems and so on.

  1. Various scripts of human's dreams

People's dreams have various scripts but there are some common themes. For example most people dream about flying, being chased, falling or not being able to move. People think that such dreams want to tell us something about our feature. There are a lot of books trying to interpret our dreams and to explain what the future holds.

  • So if we dream about being chased, we are running away from something in real life.

  • A dream about crossroads symbolizes that soon you will have to make an important decision about business or love.

  • Finding money may symbolize a birth.

  • Crossing a river means a fundamental change of lifestyle.

  • Dreaming about a rainbow predicts good news.

  • If you feel that you are falling it means that you mind about something. You should have a rest.

  • Dreaming about flying means that you are unhappy and in real life you are finding the better life for you.

Chapter 2. Practical work

2.1 A survey among the forth-year students of the Gymnasium #3

I have interested in this question among my classmates. So, 24 students were interviewed. It turned out that 24 pupils have dreams. But 16 could not name the reasons of their dreaming. The most popular dreaming among students is dreaming about falling. 22 children have nightmares.

The survey showed that many students have nightmares or just bad dreams. So we decided to make a list of recommendation for having good dreams.

2.2 Recommendation for having good dreams

  • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time, even on the weekends.

  • Get enough sleep. Adults need at least 8 hours. Teens should get 9. Kids need even more.

  • Of course, your bed and pillow(s) should be comfortable.

  • The room should not be too hot or too cold

  • Lighting should be very dim. Try black curtains, or sleep masks.

  • Radios and T.V.s are very disruptive to sleep, even if you believe they make you sleep better!

  • Don't use stimulants, such as colas, chocolate, tea, coffee too close to bed time.

  • Exercise each day, but no hard exercise within 6 hours of bedtime.

  • A light snack may help you to fall asleep.

  • Try to avoid lying awake in bed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would like to say that almost every day we see any dreams. It is interesting to know what they mean. There may be hidden secrets that are planted in our mind that we are trying to forget; possibly with a little dream interpretation we may be able to free our mind of any untold stories. Our dreams are not always good, so we should pay more attention to make our sleeping better, because it affects the success in our life as long as we are not asleep.
