2. What is Easter?

You know that Easter is the oldest and the most important Christian Festival, the celebration of the death and coming to life again of Jesus Christ.

3. What is the Easter story?

Let's speak about the Easter story. Please listen to me.

Easter is the story of Jesus' last days in Jerusalem before his death. The Easter story includes Maundy Thursday (the Last supper leading to the Eucharist), Good Friday (the day on which Jesus was crucified) and Easter Day (the day on which Jesus came back to life). (Slide 2)

Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. (Slide 4)

Jesus talked to the people. (Slide 5)

Some people did not like Jesus and wanted him killed. (Slide 6)

Jesus had a special supper with his friends. He knew he was going to die. (Slide 7)

Jesus and his friends drank wine and ate bread. Jesus said it should remind them of him. (Slide 8)

Then Jesus and his friends went to a garden to pray. (Slide 9)

Judas kissed Jesus on the cheek. This was not a good thing. Judas was helping the guards arrest Jesus. (Slide 10)

Jesus was taken away. (Slide 11)

Jesus was brought to see an important man called Pontius Pilate. Some people told Pilate that Jesus was evil and he should die. (Slide 12)

Jesus died on the cross and some friends came to put his body in a cave.(slide 14)

When some of Jesus' friends went to see his body it had gone!(slide 15)

Then they saw an angel who told them all was well and Jesus was alive.(slide 16)

Suddenly, they saw Jesus and he talked to them. He told them to tell the rest of his friends about what had happened. (Slide 17)

Jesus told all his friends that he would be back one day and they must not worry. After that he went up to heaven. (Slide 18)

4. When is Easter? (Slide 19)

Let's learn when Easter is. Let's read about this.

Easter usually comes in the month of April. However, Easter can fall as early as March 22 or as late as April 25.

Easter Day in 2014 falls on Sunday 20 April.

When is Easter in Russia?

5. Why does the date of Easter move?

Do you know why the date of Easter moves?

Easter is called a moveable feast because the date of Easter changes every year. Easter Sunday can fall on any date from 22 March to 25 April.

The reason for this variation in the date of Easter is based on the lunar calendar (moon) rather than our more well-known solar one.

Easter always falls on the first Sunday following the full Moon (the Paschal Full Moon) after 21 March. If the Full Moon falls on a Sunday then Easter is the next Sunday.

6. When is the Easter Season? (Slide 19)

The Egg (slide 26)

For Christians the custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. Eggs are a forbidden food during Lent. The first eggs given at Easter were bird's eggs. These eggs were painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift. We still paint bird eggs today but usually only chicken eggs. Let's listen to the poems about the Easter Eggs.

Easter Surprise

Yellow and blue,

Easter eggs,

For me and you.

Easter eggs,

Candy sweet,

Colouring Easter Eggs

I take an egg

All shiny white

And then I dip

It out of sight.

I leave it there

Within the cup

Then after a minute

I pick it up.

And oh!

It's a lovely

Shade of green!

The prettiest Easter egg

I've ever seen.

Palm branches

Represents when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on the first Palm Sunday and people waved palm branches, welcoming him.

Easter Bunny (slide 27)

Easter bunny is a symbol associated with fertility and the reason behind is that, it has a very quick speed of reproduction. Let's listen to the Bunny poem.

Bunnies

Bunnies are brown

Bunnies are white

An Easter delight.

Bunnies are cuddly

The large and the small.

The best of them all.

Easter Candles

These decorative candles for Easter symbolize the Jesus' return to life. They are symbols of new life. Among the Easter candles, the most famous one is the Paschal candle. People like making candles themselves. Easter bunny candles are among the kids' favorite crafts. When people light the candles, they let the light of Jesus come into your house.

Easter Lamb

The Easter lamb represents Jesus "the Lamb of God".

Easter Cross (slide 28)

A cross symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is a sacred symbol that signifies faith. An empty Easter cross is symbol of the resurrection of Lord Jesus that represents the victory of life over death.

We can find crosses of different lengths, but six to seven feet long looks real impressive. It is used for prayer purpose during the Lent season.

Easter Lily

Easter lily is a symbol associated with motherhood. Symbol of Easter, white Lily signifies purity and hope.

As a part of Easter tradition, to honor the Jesus' resurrection, churches are decorated with beautiful white lilies. At homes, they find a special place for themselves in colorful flower baskets. Also, they serve as wonderful Easter gifts. Since white lily symbolizes purity, it is often associated with mother Mary.
