The topic of the lesson: The Place We Live In

The main aims: the developing of speaking and writing skills, the enlarging of pupils' vocabulary, the consolidation of knowledge in grammar (The Past Indefinite Tense: Regular & Irregular Verbs)


The Procedure of the Lesson

  1. An Organized Minute

Teacher - Good morning, dear children!

Pupils - Good morning, dear teacher!

Teacher - I'm glad to see you.

Pupils - We are glad to see you, too.

Teacher - How do you do?

Pupils - How do you do?

Teacher - I hope you're well.

Pupils - We're hope you are too.

Teacher - Thank you. Sit down, please. Who is on duty today?

Pupil - I am on duty today.

Teacher - Who is absent? Who is away from the lesson?

Pupil - Somebody is absent today.

Teacher - What the matter with him (her, them)?

Pupil - I'm sorry. I don't know.

Teacher - Who knows?

Pupil - I think he (she) is (they are) ill.

  1. The definition of the main aims of the lesson

Teacher -Today we continue our work on the topic "The Place We Live In". At the lesson we have to develop our speaking and writing skills (as we are going to have a word dictation) and to consolidate the knowledge in grammar and. That's why I want to start our lesson with phonetic drills and the song about the place we live in.

  1. Phonetic drills

[ǽ] - bad, man, back. A fat cat sat on a mat and ate a fat rat.;

[η] - sitting, living, dining, sitting-room, living-room, dining-room;

[o:] - all, ball, tall, wall, small, hall;

[i:] - tea, me, sea, tree, three, key;

[au] - loud, mouse, mouth, about, shout;

[k] - black, back, dock, lock, stock.

I like it very much

It's very comfortable

It is rather large

It has two bedrooms,

A living-room, a hall,

A toilet, a bathroom

And a kitchen which is small.

  1. Warming-up activity (questions-answers work)

1) Where can people live?

2) Is your flat/house large or small?

3) How many rooms are there in your flat/house?

4) Have you got a kitchen/a toilet in your flat/house?

5) Are there two/three bedrooms/living-rooms in your flat?

6) Do you like your flat house?

  1. Word-work

Teacher - It was great. And now let's recollect the words on the topic of the lesson.

1) Read the words and translate them into Ukrainian

Teacher - Look at the blackboard read the words and give their Ukrainian Equivalents:

2) Listen to the sentences and translate them into Ukrainian

1. The door is locked, isn't it?

2. There is a piano in the living-room.

3. How many rooms are there in your house?

4. I went there by car.

5. Where are the keys?

7. Why are you shouting? I can hear you well.

8. My bedroom is in the back of the house.

3) Match Ukrainian words with their English equivalents

5) Let's see if you remember the names of the rooms. Finish the sentences and

4. We cook in the … (kitchen)


  1. Developing of writing skills

Teacher - Well done and now it's high time to have our word dictation. Open your exercise-books write down today's date and get ready to write, the first word is … and the last on is … Today your task is to translate the sentence from Ukrainian into English and write it down. Я залишив свій ключ у коридорі.

  1. Relaxing Minute

Teacher - We have already done a lot of tasks and activities and I think you are a little bit tired, that's why I want you to have rest and sing a song "Keep on Dancing"

  1. Developing of speaking skills

Teacher - Thank you very much, sit down, please. Let's continue our work. Open your books at page 121.

  1. Exercise 1. Pete is a boaster and many things he says are not true. Can you correct him?

    1. I have one hundred houses.

    2. I go to school by car.

    3. There are twenty-five rooms in my house.

    4. There are seven bathrooms and four toilets in my house.

    5. All members of my family have different cars.

    6. I have ten windows in my bedroom.

    7. My living-room is so large that I can keep my car in it.

  2. Exercise 2. Look at the table. How many true sentences can you say about the place you or your relatives live in? (Remember that we use the word "has" only with He, She, It )

  1. Exercise 3. Complete the following statements. Say them to your classmates and ask them to agree or disagree.

9. Developing of grammar skills

Teacher - Let us fresh up the using of the Past Indefinite Tense. When do we use this tense?

Pupil - We use Past Indefinite when we speak about actions in the past

Teacher - Right you are. And what do we know about English verbs?

Pupil - There are regular and irregular verbs.

Teacher - It's correct. How do they differ from each other?

Pupil - In Past Indefinite we use regular verbs with the ending -ed and the second form of

the irregular verbs.

Teacher - You are quite right. Let us recollect some of the verbs.

2) Let us open the brackets to know what happened to Robert yesterday (Exercise 4,

Page 122)

Robert always (to leave) his keys in the hall but yesterday he (can, cannot) see them anywhere. Robert didn't (to lock) the door and (to leave) the house. He (to meet) John in the street and (to join) him. He told John about the keys. John (to laugh) a lot and then he (to shout), "Look! Your keys are in your pocket."


6. Home task

Teacher - Your home task is to write down exercise 2 (4), pages 121-122

7. Assessment and evaluation

Teacher - So, our lesson is over. I think we achieved the main aims of the lesson and

consolidate all the knowledge on the topic of the lesson. All the pupils took an

active part in the work on the topic of the lesson. Today all of you tried to show

good skills in speaking, writing and grammar. Today your marks are…
