Geologists think that Lake Baikal formed somewhere 20-25 million years ago. Baikal water is cold, pure and oxygen-rich. Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which exist nowhere else in the world. More than 80% of the animals are endemic. Baikal is famous for its seals and omul. The nature of Baikal is very beautiful. There are a lot of mountains and forests around the lake. Forests are called Siberian taiga. The lake has got a nickname "The Pearl of Siberia". Baikal is a popular place among tourists from all over the world. According to the statistics 146,937 people visited Irkutsk and Baikal in 2014.
