«Иностранные языки. СМС язык как вариант английского языка»

Цель урока: развитие познавательной активности и повышение мотивации к изучению английского языка за счёт овладения определённым объёмом дополнительных знаний об изучаемом языке.

Задачи:

1) развивающий аспект: развивать мышление, творческую фантазию и инициативу в осуществлении иноязычной речевой деятельности;

2) воспитательный аспект: формировать у школьников уважительное отношение к родному и иностранному языкам;

3) учебный аспект: совершенствовать лексические навыки устной речи и чтения.

Ход урока:

I. Warm up.

1. Teacher: Imagine that you are going to buy a present for your sister (brother). Which one would you choose and why?

• a mobile phone

• a computer game

• a camera

• an MP3 player

2. Teacher: And you? Do you want to get a mobile phone as a present? Do you like it? Try to write your own poem about a mobile using the following plan:

• on the first line write a noun

• on the second line write two adjectives describing the noun

• on the third line write a verb to describe the noun in action

• start the fourth line with like or as

• start the fifth line with if only followed by a wish.

II. Reading

Teacher: Read the text about functions of mobile phones and answer the questions after the text.

SMS Message is the Most Popular Service of a Mobile Phone

Mobile phones have changed our life. They gave us an opportunity to be reachable everywhere. Over the last few years mobiles have become more advanced. Modern mobile phones may have many additional services, such as SMS, e-mail, access to the Internet, games, Bluetooth, personal organizer, camera with video recorder, MMS for sending and receiving photos and video, MP3 player, radio, GPS navigation, etc.

SMS is the most popular one among them. Short message service is used to send and receive short messages to and from mobile phones.

SMS messages have a number of advantages. Firstly, SMS is a cheap and quick means of communication. In comparison with a call they do not interrupt a person if he or she is in the middle of a meeting and can't answer you now.

The idea of SMS messages is to send a comprehensible message as quickly as possible. That is why traditional rules of grammar and spelling are ignored when you are typing to your friend.

The limit of the text messages has lead to a new abbreviated variant (version) of English which is like a rebus. There are no standard rules for writing SMS. A lot of words can be shortened in them. They can also be combined with numbers.

III. Language Work

1. Teacher: SMS language has some stylistic peculiarities. If you don't know them, it's difficult for you to understand the message. For example, try to guess what this text means: "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4 we usd 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF& thr 3 kds F2F. ILNY it's a gr8 plc." Can you do it?

2. Teacher: The students of the 11-th form have made their own classification of elements of SMS language which will help you deal with it.

Студенты 11 класса делают сообщение (на русском языке) о классификации СМС языка по материалам своего исследовательского проекта "Стилистические особенности СМС языка».

Классификация элементов СМС языка:

1. Аббревиатуры в виде начальных букв устойчивых словосочетаний:

• EOD - end of discussion - конец связи

• GF - girlfriend - девушка

• BF - boyfriend - парень

• PCM - please call me - позвони

• DK - don't know - не знаю

• NC - no comment - без комментариев

• HAND - have a nice day - хорошо проводить время

2. Аббревиатуры, состоящие из букв и цифр:

• f2f - face to face - лицом к лицу

• h2cus - hope to see you soon - надеюсь скоро тебя увидеть

• t2ul - talk to you later - поговорим позже

• 2dA - today - сегодня

• w8 - wait - подожди

• some1 - someone - кто-нибудь

• h8 - hate - ненавижу

3. Аббревиатуры, состоящие из начальной буквы первой части сложного слова и полной второй части сложного слова:

• H-film - horror film

• V-ball - volleyball

• F-ball - football

• X-treme - extreme

• V-day - Victory day

• G-man - government man

4. Аббревиатуры в виде усечения финальной части исходного слова:

• vac - vacation

• hols - holidays

• grad - graduate

• techno - technology

• doc - doctor

• demo - demonstration

• crim - criminal

• ad - advertisement

5. Беглость гласных:

• msg - message

• pls - please

• adds - address

• gds - goods

• exx - examples

• exps - expenses

• rwy - railway

• mdnt - midnight

• bldg - building

6. Слова, читаемые по алфавитному названию начальных букв:

• u - you - ты

• c - see - вижу

• cu - see you - увидимся

• y - why - почему

7. Упрощение спеллинга слов:

• nite - night - ночь / knight - рыцарь

• wot - what - что

8. Графические знаки:

• ? - question

• & - and

• = - that is

9. Смайлы.

Одно и то же слово можно передать на СМС язык, используя разные способы словообразования. Например,

• gr[gr] + 8[eit] = Gr8 - great [greit]

• gr[gr] + A[ei] + t[t]= grAt [greit] - great [greit]

IV. Practice work.

1. The teacher: Let's divide into three groups. Now return to the message "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4 we usd 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF& thr 3 kds F2F. ILNY it's a gr8 plc." What does the message mean? What means of wordformation were used there?

Учащиеся в группах переписывают данное СМС сообщение на традиционный английский язык. Это должно звучать так: "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend and their 3 kids face to face. I love New York, it's a great place."

Затем учащиеся указывают, что в данном высказывании были использованы следующие способы словообразования:

• беглость гласных: smmr - summer, kds - kids, wr - were, usd - used, thr - their, plc - place;

• усечение финальной части исходного слова: hols - holidays, bro - brother;

• аббревиатуры в виде начальных букв устойчивых словосочетаний: CWOT - complete waste of time, NY - New York, GF - girlfriend, ILNY - I love New York;

• аббревиатуры, состоящие из букв и цифр: B4 - before , 2go2 - to go to, gr8 - great, F2F - face to face;

• аббревиатуры, состоящие из цифры и слова, читаемого по алфавитному названию начальной буквы: 2C - to see.

2. Teacher: Now rewrite the poem by A. Pushkin in SMS language. Be ready to explain what means of wordformation you used?

A magic moment I remember:

I raised my eyes and you were there,

A fleeting vision and a fair

Of all that's beautiful and rare.

Учащиеся работают в группах и затем предлагают аудитории свои варианты передачи данного четверостишия на язык СМС и объясняют, какие способы словообразования СМС языка они использовали.

V. Discussion.

Teacher: I want you to discuss some problems which worry not only scientists but also us, ordinary people.

1. SMS language is rather popular among teenagers. Why?

Предполагаемые ответы учащихся:

• to save space and time;

• they are fond of new technologies;

• to entertain;

• to code the message

2. What do you think in what spheres SMS language can be useful?

Предполагаемые ответы учащихся:

• in communication to send and receive messages, to chat in the Internet;

• in education to make notes during lectures;

• in technology to write instructions;

• in learning English

3. Some scientists think that SMS language has negative influence on teenagers. Why?

• they make mistakes in grammar and spelling

• they became illiterate

• they can get SMS addiction

• they are afraid of real communication

4. What do you think about the future of SMS language? Will it disappear, exist for ever or be replaced by another language?
