"The wonderful world of books"

3. Speaking

As you have guessed, today we shall speak about our friends - books.

As an old saying goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of knowledge and the means of self - perfection. Sometimes it is difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can help us. Books must be our friends during all our life.

1. Many people collect books. It is their hobby and I am sure it's easy to explain why. We learn when we read books.

• Whose hobby is reading?

• Who else likes to read?

A book is our best friend. Every man always needs a true friend and a good teacher. Of course such friend and such teacher for him is a book.

• When I was little I liked to read tales. But now I prefer to read books about travels. I like to travel with the heroes of the stories. I see many interesting places in other countries.

Pupil 1:

• I have a good collection of books at home, and I often give my books to my friends.

Pupil 2:

• Our family has got many books. All the members of our family buy books and read them. Of course it is impossible to buy all books which we like. That's why I often go to the library.

• As for me I prefer to visit our children library in the palace of culture of the railway library. There is a rich collection of different books there.

• We can't buy all the books we want to read. That's why we often go to the library to read there or to take out a book to read at home.

• I'm fond of reading. Usually I borrow books from the library, but I have a lot of them at home, too.

Pupil 1:

• William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616). W. Shakespeare, a famous English dramatist was born in Stratford - on - Avon. He was a great humorist and realist. He wrote many comedies, historical plays and tragedies. The most famous are: "Twelfth Night", "Hamlet", "Romeo and Juliet", "King Lear", "Othello" and others. Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets, which are real masterpieces of poetry.

Pupil 2:

• Alexander Pushkin (1799 - 1837). A. Pushkin a famous Russian poet, novelist, dramatist and a short-story writer was born in Moscow. He is considered the greatest poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. He is the well-known author of "Evgeny Onegin", "Boris Godunov", "Little Tragedies", "Ruslan and Lyudmila", "Dubrovsky", "The Captain's Daughter" and others. His death was considered a national tragedy by all Russian people. His works are translated into all the major languages.

• And what is your favourite book?

Pupil 1:

• When I was a child, my favourite book was "Alice in Wonderland" by the English writer Carrol. I reread it many times. It is a story about a girl and her adventures in a magic country. This book is full of funny episodes. I always enjoy it.

Pupil 2:

• My favourite book is "Mary Poppins". The author of the book is Pamela Travers. She is a famous English writer. The book tells us about wonderful adventures of children with their magic nurse Mary Poppins. She is my favourite character. She is kind and strict at the same time, joyful and tactful, well-bred and very pretty. Mary Poppins is popular with children.

• In my childhood my favourite book was "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe. It shows a dangerous difficult life of a young man on an island. He lived on the island for 28 years. He worked a lot and learnt to make many useful things. How he fought with nature. At first he was an experienced, weak youth, and then he became a strong-willed man. D. Defoe teaches people how to live; he tries to explain what's good and what's bad.

I am sure everybody sitting here , is fond of fairy- tales. That' s why I want you to listen to 5 short texts about tale's characters. Try to guess who they are and do the multiple choice exercise. Then check up your results with the answers given on the blackboard with the whole class.

He is a young man. He is too strong. He is very tall. He is a militiaman. He is a good friend of all children. Children are fond of this character greatly.

She is a very pretty girl. She has a round face. Her eyes are large and blue. Her hair is long. It is blue. She wears a nice blue dress. She can read and write. She likes reading and writing. She reads a lot.

The girl is beautiful but she has no nice dresses and shoes. She hasn't got a mother, but she has got a father. He loves her greatly. He has got the second wife now. Who is the girl's stepmother. She is not kind, she is terrible. That woman has got two daughters who are the girl's stepsisters. They are not good but they have nice dresses and shoes.

And now a little bit unusual task for you to do. You should devide yourselves into 3 groups. I'll give every group some parts of the tale "Snow Queen". You'll read them and try to make up the whole tale in a logical order. Then choose one participant from your group and they will read the tale one by one.

• Today we have talked much about books and we have learnt that books play a very important role in our life. It's almost impossible to imagine our life without books. Sometimes they help us to survive in such difficult time. I am sure everybody will choose a book as he chooses a friend and will always remember Some Good Advice. Let's read them.
