Our lives would be hard without rest and recreation. People have quite different ideas of how to spend their free time. For some of them the only way to relax is watching TV or drinking beer. But other people use their spare time getting maximum benefit from it. We strongly feel that hobbies make our lives much more interesting.

  2. To find out what hobbies exist in the world and where they have come from.

  3. To classify hobbies and to make up a table.

  4. To make a survey and to find out the hobbies of 5 V form`s pupils and their teachers.

  5. To collect photos of their hobbies.

  6. To make a conclusion.

The ways of research are:

  1. To select information.

  2. To analyze information.

  3. To make questionnaire.

  4. To summarize information.

We pull out the hypothesis: Hobby is a kind of self - expression and the way to understand other people and the whole world.

The practical value of the work is evident. It may be interesting and useful for pupils, their parents and teachers. It can help them to find an exciting activity which they really like, that can develop their skills and express themselves.

What is a hobby? Why do people have hobbies?

Make the most of today. Get interested in something.

Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby.

Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you.

Live today with gusto.

Дейл Карнеги (американский педагог, писатель)

Wikipedia: A hobby is an activity, interest, enthusiasm, or amateur pastime that is undertaken for pleasure or relaxation, typically done during one`s leisure time.

Psychologist state following theory, which we totally agree with because, can be easily proved: having certain preoccupations (hobbies) makes your life quality grow by enhancing the level of happiness.

Recreation refers to the time spent in an activity one loves to engage in, with intent to feel refreshed. It is a break from monotony and a diversion from the daily routine. It is a positive change from the stereotypical lifestyle and involves an active participation in entertaining activities that one is interested in. Recreational activities give enjoyment because, while recreating one engages in something he likes. They are a source of joy and they provide relaxation to one`s mind and body.

Why do people have hobbies? Firstly, they want to have a good and quality time. A hobby helps people to relax after work or school.

Having a hobby people realize themselves in different ways. For young children and teenagers it is a way to develop their skills and talent and of course to keep them away from things like drugs, alcohol and bad company. Doing a hobby stimulates your brain. A hobby helps to concentrate on other work later.

If you are good at your hobby, you feel proud of yourself.

Hobbies of famous people

There is something really unusual about hobbies and interests. They vary from person distinguishing one personality from the other.

Great and famous people left a lot of discoveries and works of art. Also they had hobbies which were as original as the people themselves. For example:

Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, an inventor and a good cook.

Dmitry Mendeleyev the famous chemist, made suitcases.

Gerber Wales, the writer of fantastic stories, was a collector of tin soldiers.

The Russian tsar Peter I was fond of lather work. He liked to carve things from elephant bone and wood. He also was a collector of walking sticks, coins, weapons, stones, paintings and many others.

Ernest Hemingway always took time out for outdoor fishing trips with his friends. He started fishing at the age of 3, and wrote many write ups, like Tuna Fishing in Spain, Trout Fishing All across Europe: Spain Has the Best, Then Germany. His first novel published in 1952, The Old Man and the Sea, was also based on the life of an old fisherman.

Victor Hugo was fond of hiking and horseback riding.

Ivan Turgenev liked hunting.

Some famous people excelled in their hobbies more than in their professions and became famous due to their hobbies.

The writer Anton Chekhov was a doctor.

The founder of the rocket Constantine Tsiolkovski was a teacher.

Did you know? Celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson, Jimmy Jacobs, and Nicholas Cage are comic-book collectors.

Michael Gambon, the actor who played Professor Dumbledore in the Harry Potter Series, has a hobby of collecting vintage guns and firearms. Adding to the list is our very dear Tom Hanks, who collects vintage typewriters as his hobby.

Emma Watson loved studying and reading when she played "Hermione Granger" in the Harry Potter Series. In a real life she is mad of playing ping pong.

Mark Zuckerberg, one of the co-founders of Face book, started writing software as a hobby. Face book made Mark Zuckerberg a billionaire when he was just 23 years old!

Madonna`s lifestyle is all about fitness. She is an ardent fitness lover. She used to practice yoga all days of the week at one point. She has recently launched her DVD workout series and has also opened a gym chain called Hard Candy Fitness.

Some kinds of collecting

Collecting things is an activity of gathering interesting or valuable objects. They can be work of art, coins, books, films, stones, stamps, badges, cars, insects, flowers, etc. Here are some examples:

Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects. While numismatists are often characterized as students or collectors of coins, the discipline also includes the broader study of money and other payment media used to resolve debts and the exchange of goods. Early money used by people is referred to as "Odd and curious", but the use of other goods in barter exchange is excluded, even where used as a circulating currency (e.g., cigarettes in prison).

Button collecting may refer to the collecting of various types of buttons. This article refers to the collecting of clothing buttons. Button collecting varies widely. In its most informal manifestation, a button collection may simply be the household button container, where buttons are stored for future use on clothing or for crafts. At the other end of the spectrum is the competitive collector, mainly found in the United States. In between these two extremes exist casual button collectors, who accumulate buttons for sheer enjoyment and relaxation, as well as for their functional value.

Book collecting is the collecting of books, including seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining whatever books are of interest to a given individual collector. The love of books is bibliophile, and someone who loves to read, admire, and collect books is a bibliophile. Bibliophile book collecting is distinct from casual book ownership and the accumulation of books for reading. It can probably be said to have begun with the collections of illuminated manuscripts, both commissioned and second-hand, by the elites of Burgundy and France in particular, which became common in the 15th century. Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy appears to have had the largest private collection of his day, with about six hundred volumes. With the advent of printing with movable type books became considerably cheaper, and book collecting received a particular impetus in England and elsewhere during the Rreformation when many monastic libraries were broken up, and their contents often destroyed. There was an English antiquarian reaction to Henry dissolution of the Monasteries. The commissioners of Edward VI plundered and stripped university, college, and monastic libraries, so to save books from being destroyed, those who could began to collect them.

Philately is the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting, which does not necessarily involve the study of stamps. It is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps.[1] For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare, or reside only in museums. There are hundreds of popular subjects, such as birds on stamps, and ships, poets, presidents, monarchs, maps, aircraft, space craft, sports and insects on stamps.

Calendar collecting is the study of pocket calendars. It is a famous kind of collecting because it is not expensive and a calendar is easy to get.

Philomena is the hobby of collecting different matchboxes, matchbox labels. Collecting of matchbox labels emerged together with matches. In some collections it is possible to find labels from chemical matches, produced in 1810-1815-long before the modern matches arrived. Quite often people who went abroad brought back matchboxes as souvenirs from other countries. After World War II a lot of match factories worked in close contact with local phillumenists, issuing special non-advertising sets. The hobby became especially widespread from the 1960s through the 1980s. Widespread introduction of bulky (for collectors) cardboard matchboxes with less distinct images on them, much poorer quality of print and, also some social phenomena, made this hobby (like many others, not connected with commerce) much less engaged.

Doll collecting is the collecting of dolls made from different materials.

Where do some hobbies come from?

Origami - paper folding originates from China. Origami is from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper" is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD at the latest and was popularized outside of Japan in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami. Paper cutting and gluing is usually considered kirigami.

The number of basic origami folds is small, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. The best known origami model is probably the Japanese paper crane. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be different colors or prints. Traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (1603-1867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper or using no square shapes to start with.

Iris folding is a paper craft technique that involves folding strips of colored paper in such a way to form a design. The center of the design forms an iris - a shape reminiscent of the iris diaphragm of a camera lens.

Iris folding is done with a pattern. The crafter users the finished product to decorate the front of a greeting card, as a scrapbook embellishment, to decorate an altered book or a mixed media collage, or in various other ways.

Supplies for iris folding include a pattern, strips of colored paper, permanent transparent tape, cutting tools and a temporary tape such as painters tape. The temporary tape is used to hold the pattern in place while the craftsperson creates the design.

Iris folding patterns are available from booksellers or as downloadable files made available on Internet web sites. Other craft persons doing iris folding create their own patterns.

Iris folding originated in Holland, where early craft persons made their designs using patterned paper cut from the inside of envelopes. Today, crafters use any light weight paper, such as scrapbook paper, origami paper, wrapping paper, the inside of envelopes or pages of magazines. Ribbon is also used.

Decoupage (or decoupage) is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and so on. Commonly an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered by cutouts from magazines or from purpose-manufactured papers. Each layer is sealed with varnishes (often multiple coats) until the "stuck on" appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work. The traditional technique used 30-40 layers of varnish which were then sanded to a polished finish. This was known in 18th century England as the art of Japanning after its presumed origins.

Embroidery is the life or handicraft of decorating fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as metal strips, pearls, beads, quills, and sequins. Embroidery is most often recommended for caps, hats, coats, blankets, dress shirts, denim, stockings, and golf shirts. Embroidery is available with a wide variety of thread or yarn color.

The early examples of embroidery were found in ancient Egypt, China, Persia, India and England.

A characteristic of embroidery is that the basic techniques or stitches of the earliest work-chain stitch, buttonhole or blanket stitch, running stitch, satin stitch, cross stitch-remain the fundamental techniques of hand embroidery today.

Conclusion

Our life is impossible without hobbies. There are different kinds of hobbies such as reading, cooking, knitting, collecting, playing a musical instrument, painting, photography, dancing, travelling, sports and many others.

In general, having a hobby is very important for everybody because it is kind of self-expression and the way to understand other people and the whole world. A hobby makes you stronger physically and mentally, helps you escape from reality, improve your knowledge, broaden your mind, develop your skills and gain a better understanding of how the world works.

Nevertheless, quite a lot of people have no hobby. Most of them say that they are too busy or too tired to do anything in their free time. But we are sure that such people are lazy and passive and their lives are dull and uneventful.

The work has shown that hobbies play an essential part in our teachers and pupils` lives. It has revealed the variety of their hobbies and interests. We have learned that useful hobbies such as flower garden, embroidery, knitting, sports are popular both with children and grownups.

They are also keen on collecting coins, stamps, books, games, posters. Pupils and teachers like playing musical instruments, dancing and singing, drawing. Teachers prefer travelling and visiting interesting places. Pupils are very fond of computers.

To sum up, hobbies differ like tastes. But if you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste - you are lucky because your life becomes more interesting and eventful. And a hobby helps you to succeed in the future and be satisfied with your life.
