The host:-Good afternoon, dear friends and guests! The most popular holiday in Great Britain is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 25^th of December as the time of the birth of Jesus Christ. In our country also there is a tradition to celebrate Christmas. And it is celebrated on the 7^th January. And the main symbols of Christmas and New Year will tell us many interesting things. Let me introduce Santa Claus, Elf, Grandfather the Frost and Snegurochka.

Santa Claus: Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It's a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. A Christmas tree stands in everybody's living-room at Christmas. In the earliest of times green trees were symbols of life. Candles at Christmas also go back to those times. People believed that their light helped them to forget the darkness of winter.

Elf: Most families buy gifts for relatives and friends, write Christmas cards. They are sent before Christmas Day and people use them to decorate their houses. What could be nicer than a mantle piece decorated with beautiful cards bearing good wishes from friends and relatives. (Дарят друг другу открытки)

Santa Claus: Christmas is a time for eating. The traditional food is turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding made of fruit.

Elf: On Christmas Eve in the evening everyone goes to church. Here people sing carols. On Christmas Eve families visit their friends and relatives.

Santa Claus: On Christmas people go from house to house, sing Christmas carols to their neighbors and receive money or small gifts. Let's sing the song, too.

The song "Jingle Bells"

Elf: Another Christmas symbol is Advent Wreath. It came from Germany. The Wreath is made of four candles in a circle of evergreens with the 5^th candle in the middle. Each day at home the candles are lighted. The lighting of the candles represents Jesus Christ being born.

Santa Clause: Christmas Crackers have been a part of the traditional British Christmas since1847. They are used to decorate the table at dinner. In it's simple form a cracker is a small cardboard tube covered in a brightly coloured twist of paper. Inside the cracker there is usually a tissue paper hat, a balloon, a slip of paper with a very corny joke on it. The family will pull each other's crackers before the meal starts. The person who gets the "big end" keeps the plastic trinket. The paper hats are donned, and the jokes read out.

Elf: In England Boxing Day celebrated on December 26th, is traditionally a time to give gifts to relatives, servants, and friends. In the UK Boxing Day is a public holiday, some shops and supermarkets open nowadays, but banks and most offices remain closed.

Snegurochka: In the days of the Soviet Union, Christmas was not celebrated very much. New Year was the important time. Now Christmas is normally celebrated on January 7th.

Ded Moroz' : Some people fast (don't eat anything) on Christmas Eve, until the first star has appeared in the sky. People then eat 'sochivo' or 'kutia' a porridge made from wheat or rice served with honey, fruit, even fruit jellies! Kutia is sometimes eaten from one common bowl, this symbolizes unity.

Snegurochka: Other popular Christmas Eve foods include beetroot soup (borsch) or vegan potluck (solyanka) served with individual vegetable pies (often made with cabbage, potato, or mushroom). Sauerkraut is main dish in the Christmas Eve meal. It might be followed by more pies or porridge dishes such as buckwheat with fried onions and fried mushrooms. Dessert is often things like fruit pies and honeybread cookies, fresh and dried fruit and more nuts.

Ded Moroz': Vzvar' (meaning 'boil-up') is often served at the end of the meal. It's a sweet drink made from dried fruit and honey boiled in water. Vzvar is traditionally at the birth of a child, so at Christmas it symbolizes the birth of the baby Jesus.

The New Year celebrations are still very important to Russians (sometimes more than Christmas).

Snegurochka: On New Year's eve children hold hands, make a circle around the Christmas tree and call for Snegurochka or Ded Moroz. When we appear the star and other lights on the Christmas tree light up! Ded Moroz carries a big magic staff.

Ded Moroz': New Year's Day is a family holiday for many Russians. Dinner usually starts late on December 31. People may celebrate the day at a friend's house or attend the fireworks in their city.
