Sport in Our Life

People all over the world are fond of sports and games. Sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit, more organized and better disciplined. It unites people of different classes and nationalities.

Many people do sports on their personal initiative. They go in for skiing, skating, table tennis, swimming, volleyball, football, etc. All necessary facilities are provided for them: stadiums, sport grounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, skiing stations, football fields. Sport is paid much attention to in our educational establishments. Gymnastics is a part of children's daily activity in the kindergartens. Physical culture is a compulsory subject at schools and colleges.

Practically all kinds of sports are popular in our country but football, gymnastics and tennis enjoy the greatest popularity. As for me, I go in for swimming. It needs mobility, liveliness and much energy. It keeps a person in a good form. I have been swimming for a 5 years. I get a real joy taking part in competitions or a simply swimming with my friends. Certainly, it's a great distance between my manner of swimming and such favorites as Klochkova, but I do my training with great pleasure and hope to swim well as our best swimmers do.

Sport is very important in our life. It is popular among young and old people. Many people do morning exercises, jog in the morning, train themselves in clubs, in different sections and take part in sport competitions. Other people like sports too, but they only watch sports games, listen to sports news. They prefer reading interesting stories about sportsmen. But they don't go in for sports.

Physical training is an important subject at vocational schools. Pupils have got physical training lessons twice a week. Boys and girls play volley-ball and basket-ball at the lessons. There is a sports ground near our vocational school and pupils go in for sports in the open air. A lot of different competitions are held at vocational schools, a great number of pupils take part in them. All participants try to get good results and become winners.

The most popular outdoor winter sports are shooting and hunting, hockey and, in the countries where the weather is frosty and there is much snow - skating, skiing and tobogganing.

It's so nice to go to the skating-rink on a frosty sunny day. Some people prefer to be out of town in such weather and to sledge or to ski in the woods. Many people greatly enjoy figure-skating and ski-jumping.

Summer affords excellent opportunities for swimming, boating, yachting, cycling, gliding and many other sports. Among outdoor games football takes the first place in public interests; this game is played in all the countries of the world. The other games that have firmly established themselves in favour in different countries are cricket, volley-ball, basketball, and so on. Badminton is also very popular both with young and old.

All the year round many people indulge in boxing, wrestling, gymnastics and track and field events. Scores of young girls and women go in for callisthenics. Over the last few years aerobics has become popular with young girls and women.

Among indoor games which one can go in for all the year round are billiards, table tennis, draughts, chess, of course. The results of chess tournaments are studied and discussed by enthusiasts in different countries.

So, we have all grounds to say that sport is one of the things that makes people kin.

Sport in Ukraine

Ukrainian sports have many glorious pages. In all times our sportsmen have been the strongest in many kinds of sports. Athletes from Europe and Asia, Africa and America have always been afraid of their Ukrainian opponents. People all over the world know such names as brothers Klichko, Yana Klochkova, Lilia Podkopayeva, many others and of course Andrey Shevchenko, who was recognized as the best goalkeeper.

In the Soviet Ukraine junior sport was well-developed. There were many sport clubs, stadiums, grounds and gyms all over the country. Many competitions between schools took place in every town. In our clubs the best coaches worked. Among the sports popular in our country are football, basketball, swimming, volleyball, ice hockey, tennis, gymnastics, and figure skating. A person can choose sports and games for any seasons and for any taste. Unfortunately the situation has changed to the worse in the nineties. If an athlete wants to reach a good result he has to train abroad. Many qualified coaches left Russia, because of the material factor. The number of free sports clubs for children reduced greatly. More children's clubs became paid ones. Many stadiums and gyms were changed into markets and shops. Some talented athletes can't regularly participate in competitions because they must go to other towns and live there at their own expenses, paying for the tickets, hotels and meals with their own money. Sports equipment and sports clothes are rather expensive, too.

But nevertheless Ukraine has remained the greatest sport power. Our sportsmen with brilliance defend the honour of our national flag.

Famous Olympic champions of Ukraine

Serhiy Bubka

Date of birth: 4 December 1963 (Luhansk, Ukrainian SSR) Serhiy Bubka (Сергій Бубка) is six times world champion (between 1983 and 1997), European champion in 1986 and Olympic champion in 1988. He broke the world record for men's pole vaulting 35 times (17 outdoor and 18 indoor records). He was the first to clear 6.0 metres and the first and only to clear 6.10 metres (20 ft). He holds the current outdoor world record of 6.14 metres (20 feet 1 3/4 inches), set on 31 July 1994 in Sestriere, Italy and the current indoor world record of 6.15 meters, set on 21 February 1993 in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Liliya Podkopayeva

Date of birth: 15 August 1978 (Donetsk, Ukrainian SSR)

Liliya Podkopayeva (Лілія Подкопаєва) is the 1996 Olympic all-around champion. She is widely regarded as one of the best gymnasts in history. She is the proud owner of 45 gold, 21 silver and 14 bronze medals.

Yana Klochkova

Date of birth: 7 August 1982 (Simferopol, Crimea, Ukrainian

SSR)

Yana Klochkova (Яна Клочкова) is a Ukrainian swimmer, who has won five Olympic medals. 4 gold medals came in the 200 meter individual medley and the 400 meter individual medley at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics. Her silver medal came in the 800 meter freestyle at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Anna Bessonova

Date of birth: 29 July 1984 (Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR)

Anna Bessonova (Анна Бессонова) is the number one rhythmic gymnast in Ukraine. In 2007, Bessonova became world champion at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship in Patras winning the all-around gold medal. She won the bronze individual all around medals at the 2008 Beijing and 2004 Athens Olympics. Over the course of her career she has won 24 World Championship medals, 2 Olympic medals, 24 European Championship medals and 10 World Cup medals (60 in total).

Oksana Baiul

Date of birth: 16 November 1977 (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukrainian SSR) Oksana Baiul (Оксана Баюл) is a Ukrainian professional figure skater. She is the 1994 Olympic champion in ladies' singles and the 1993 World champion.

Kateryna Serebrianska

Date of birth: 25 October 1977 (Semfiropol, Ukrainian SSR)

Kateryna Serebrianska (Катерина Серебрянська) started gymnastics in 1982 at age 4, her mother Liubov was her coach, at the Gratsia club in Simferopol. After that she went to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, to train at the Deriugins School. Kateryna retired from Rhythmic Gymnastics in 1998. She is 178 cm / 5.8 ft in height. Serebrianska became the first female rhythmic gymnast to hold the European, World, and Olympic all-round titles at the same time. This record was tied by Alina Kabayeva at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Oleksandr Usyk

Date of birth: 17 January 1987 (Simferopol, Ukrainian SSR)

Oleksandr Usyk (Олександр Усик) is a Ukrainian amateur boxer who won the 2008 European Amateur Boxing Championships at light-heavyweight, the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships at heavyweight and the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the heavyweight division. He is a southpaw.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London after beating Italy's Clemente Russo (outscoring him by 6-3 in Round 3) Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk performed victory dance.

Denys Berinchyk

Date of birth: 5 May 1988 (Krasnodon, Luhansk region, Ukrainian SSR)

Denys Berinchyk (Денис Берінчик) is a Ukrainian amateur boxer. Berinchyk won the silver medal in the Light Welterweight division at the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku. Berinchyk is also former champion of World University Boxing Championships and European Boxing Cup at the amateur level. Denys Berinchyk won silver in light-welterweight boxing match at the London Olympics 2012.

Kateryna Tarasenko, Nataliya Dovgodko, Anastasiia Kozhenkova, Yana Dementieva

Kateryna Tarasenko, Nataliya Dovgodko, Anastasiia Kozhenkova, Yana Dementieva (Катерина Тарасенко, Наталія Довгодько, Анастасія Коженкова, Яна Дементьева) won the gold medal in the women's quadruple sculls rowing event at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

Yana Shemyakina

Date of birth: 6 January 1986 (Lviv, Ukrainian SSR)

Yana Shemyakina (Яна Шемякіна) is a Ukrainian fencer (specialised in Epee) who won Bronze during the 2009 European Fencing Championships. Yana won Gold Medal in individual epee in 2012 in London Olympics.

Olympic Games

It is reasonable to think that athletic contests were first organized some 3,500 years ago in Greece. However ancient in origin at least four of the Greek sporting festivals had achieved major importance. They were the Olympic Games, held in Olympia. There are records of the champions of Olympia from 766 B.C. to A.D. 217. The first Olympic champion listed in the records was one Coroebus of Flis, a cook, who won the sprint race in 776 B.C. The Games were abolished in A.D. 393 by the Roman emperor Theodosius.

Baron Pierre de Cubertin conceived the idea of reviving the Olympic Games, and in 1896 the first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens. 13 nations sent nearly 300 representatives to take part in 42 events and 10 different sports.

Since then the Olympic Games took place every four years, except the years of world wars. In 1996 the 26th Olympic Games took place in Atlanta, the USA. 197 nations sent more than 11,000 athletes to those Games.

For the first time in the history of Olympic Games, the Ukrainian team took part in those Games and won 22 medals there. Nine of them were golden ones.

Extreme sports

Presenter. ...and now we're going to take a look at extreme sports. What exactly are they? How dangerous are they? What makes people risk their lives to do them? Michelle is going to tell us all about them.

Michelle. Speed, excitement, danger. You can find all these in the various extreme sports that have become popular in the last ten years or so. Take bungee jumping. You jump off a bridge, like this one I'm standing on now, and you fall and fall, and then, just before you hit the ground or water, an elastic rope pulls you back. Other extreme sports appear just as crazy. In sky surfing you jump out of an aeroplane and use a board to "surf" the air, doing gymnastics in mid-air! Amazing! And extreme sports on land can be just as dangerous.

Winter sports have always had an element of danger. The new winter sports are even more dangerous. Foe example, snowboarding, which has all the excitement of surfing but on snow, is more dangerous than even skiing. Probably the most dangerous of all new winter sports is snowrafting. You sit in a rubber boat and sail down a mountain at great speed - and you can't control the boat.

Of course, water sports have always been fun, in white-water raft­ing you sit in a small inflatable raft and go down a river at a great speed. Fast flowing mountain rivers are the best.

Then there is ice diving, for those people who are absolutely crazy. You put on diving equipment and dive under a frozen lake. And, if that's not enough, you then try to walk upside down on the ice! Mm, I feel cold just thinking about it.

Sport in the USA

Baseball is the most popular sport in the United States of Ameri­ca. It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball team play well into the fall. Although no other game is exactly like baseball, perhaps the one most nearly like it is the English game cricket. In baseball there are nine men on each side. The two teams al­ternate at the bat (the offense) and the field (the defense).There are nine innings in a game. Every fall there is the World Series, a play-off for the professional championship between the top two teams of the nation - one the winner of the National League competition and the other of the American League.

Football is the most popular sport in the fall. The game originated as a college sport more than 75 years ago. It is played by almost every college and university in the country. The game is not the same as Eu­ropean football or soccer. In American football there are eleven play­ers in each team, and they are dressed in padded uniform and helmets because the game is rough and injuries are likely to occur. The object of the game is to carry or forward pass the football across the oppo­nent's goal, or scoring line.

There are professional teams in nearly all the major cities of the United States. The number of spectators at professional football games is larger than at college games, because the professional players, quite naturally, are more skilled and perform more spectacularly.

Basketball is the winter sport in American schools and colleges. Many Americans prefer it to football because it is played indoors throughout the winter and because it is a faster game. Professional basketball teams exist, bur they do not attract as many fans as profes­sional baseball team do.

Other spectator sports include wrestling, boxing and horse racing.

There are many participant sports in America. Golf is probably the most popular. Although the game originated in Scotland, it is pos­sibly more popular in the United States than anywhere else.

But as much as Americans like to engage in sports or to watch games being played, they seem to have fully as much fun reading and talking about sports. The subject of sports is as inexhaustible as the enthusiasm of its lovers.

My attitude to sport

Sport in Great Britain

The English are lovers of competitive sports; and when they are neither playing nor watching games they like to talk about them; or when they cannot do that they think about them.

The game peculiarly associated with England is cricket. Organ­ised amateur cricket is played between club teams, mainly on Saturday afternoon. A first-class match lasts for up to three days with six hours' play on each day.

Cricket is making no progress in popularity. For the great mass of the British public the eight months of the football season are more im­portant than the four months of cricket. There are plenty of amateur association football (or soccer) clubs, but professional football is big business.

Every large town has at least one professional football club. Eng­lish "league" football is organised in four divisions,, with twenty-two or twenty-four teams in each. There is also, apart from the League games, a knock-out contest each season for the Football Association Cup. And the Cup Final, played in May each year in London, which is the culminating event of the season.

Rugby football (or 'rugger') is played with an oval-shaped ball, which may be carried and thrown (but not forward).There is some pro­fessional League rugby in the north, but elsewhere the game is played by amateurs. Rugby is also played at the great majority of "public schools".

Most secondary schools have playing fields, and boys normally play rugby or soccer in winter and cricket in summer as a normal school activity; schoolgirls play tennis and rounders (a sort of baseball) in summer and netball and hockey in winter.

The more social adult games of golf and tennis are played by great numbers of people. There are plenty of tennis clubs, every town pro­vides numerous tennis courts in public parks, and anyone may play ten­nis on a municipal golf-courses in Scotland but very few in England.

Next to Association Football, the chief spectator sport in English life is horse racing. There are many race tracks all over the country, and each of these has from two to about six "meetings" every year. British are very proud of watching horses and dog racing.

Athletic sports and gymnastics are practiced at school, but not many towns have running tracks for public use. Remarkably few peo­ple are interested in bicycle racing. On the other hand, rowing occupies a leading place in the sporting life of schools and universities which have suitable water near by, and several regattas, held mainly in sum­mer, are great social occasions watched from the river banks by vast crowds of spectators.

The beginning of golf

The game of golf began in Scotland. According to a legend, a shepherd amused himself in the field by hitting little round stones with his staff. One day, a stone happened to land in a rabbit hole. The shepherd then tried to repeat this feat. The friends took up the challenge, and that, the story goes, was the first golf match in his­tory.

It is known for sure that the first golfer in was a Scottish shep­herd, but it is known that the game golf as it is played today developed in Scotland. In fact, golf became so popular during the fifteenth cen­tury the government banned the game. In 1457 in hopes of getting many golfers to their jobs. The ban didn't work, however, as few gol­fers were willing to give up sport.

In 1744, the first course designed especially for golf was built at Leith, Scotland. Until then, players used the wild, open land near the sea. In 1754, the world famous St. Amdrews coif course was built. Eager golfers still travel to Scotland for a chance to play this famous courde. The game was well established before a set of rules was orga­nized and written. The first playing rules for golf were made official at St. Andrews in 1882.
