ХОД УРОКА

I. Организационный момент (звучит песня "Strangers In The Night")

Good morning, pupils. I am glad to see you. Today we are going to speak about St. Valentine's Day.

II. Речевая разминка

Valentine's Day is a special day observed on February, 14. On this day people send greeting cards called valentines to their sweethearts, friends and members of their families. Many valentines have romantic verses, others have humorous pictures. Many people say, "Be my valentine." For weeks before February 14, stores send valentines and valentine decorations. Schoolchildren decorate their classrooms with paper hearts and lace for the occasion. On Valentine's Day many people give candy, flowers and other gifts to their friends. But the beginning of this holiday goes back to the early days of the history.

When and where does the story of Valentine's Day begin?

What countries does the holiday become popular in?

How did the people celebrate this holiday in Italy?

What is one of the oldest customs of Valentine's Day?

How were the first valentines made?

What do we see on Valentine's Day cards?

What do you know about Cupid in myths?

What have been symbols of love and happiness?

What does legend say about violets?

What did the story say about the emperor Claudius and his rule?

Now listen to the text and do the task. (ученики слушают 2 раза аудиозапись и выполняют задание)

There is a beautiful legend behind St. Valentine's Day. Saint Valentine lived in Rome in the third century AD . At that time the Emperor of Rome was Claudius. He wasn't very popular because he was trying to get more and more people for his army. The men didn't want to go to the army and Claudius thought that it was because they didn't want to leave their wives and children."If they don't get married, they'll join the army," he thought and passed a law which banned marriage.

Valentine was a Christian priest who didn't like the new law. He secretly married people who were in love. One night the emperor's soldiers caught him and put him in prison. Valentine was going to die.

Many young people felt sorry for Valentine and visited him in prison. One of them was the daughter of a prison guard. On the day of his execution Valentine wrote a note to her and signed it "Love from your Valentine ". This was on 14 February 269 AD.

Since then 14 February has been the Day of Love, when people send love letters and presents to each other. They don't sign the cards with their names , but write "Guess Who" or "Your Valentine"

At first this was a European tradition, but then it became popular in other countries. It became popular to Russia too, but a lot of people say, "If you love somebody , you should show it every day, not only.

I want you to do the following exercises:

V. Развитие навыков устной речи (монологическая речь)

There are a lot of symbols of St. Valentine's Day. And now I would like you to speak about them.

P1- I would like to tell about the heart. Many years ago, people believed that all the emotions were found in the heart. In later years, they thought only the emotion of love was connected with the heart. The heart is still a symbol of love, and it is also a symbol of Valentine's Day.

P2 - I would like to tell about the rings. In some countries, men and women exchange rings when they become engaged or marry. Valentine's Day is a popular day for giving an engagement ring. An engagement ring usually has a stone or jewel set in it.

P3 - I would like to tell about the doves. Doves were thought to be favorite birds of Venus. They remain with the same mates all their lives. The males and females both care for their babies. These birds are symbols of loyalty and love. They are also symbols of Valentine's Day.

P4 - I would like to tell about the gloves. Years ago, when a man proposed marriage to a woman, he "asked for her hand". The hand became a symbol of marriage and love. Soon gloves also became a symbol of love.

P5 - I would like to tell about the Cupid. Cupid is a son of Venus, goddess of love. He could cause people to fall in love by piercing them with one of his magic arrows.

P6 - I would like to tell about the red rose. The rose was the flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red is a color that stands for strong feelings. This is why the red rose is a flower of love.

P7 - I would like to tell about the ribbons. Ribbons go back to the days when ladies gave ribbons to their favorite knights when they went to war.

VII. Совершенствование навыков чтения с пониманием основного содержания текста, формирование контекстуальной догадки.

There are many legends about St. Valentine's Day. Now read the text and do the task. (Ученики читают текст вслух, отвечают на вопросы учителя)

The first legend tells us that three hundred years after the death of Christ, Roman Emperors still forced everyone to believe in the Roman gods. On the 14th of February there was a custom to celebrate the Day of Faun, a Roman god of forests and fields, the patron of farmers and cattle-breeders. That god had an image of a man with a goat's horns, ears, legs, and tail. On that day young men gathered to cast lots and thus they chose young girls to be their wives for the rest of the year. This custom was similar to the bird's picking their mates on the same day as in early times there was a strong belief that they did it on that very day. That might explain why love-birds seem to be such popular on Valentine cards.

The other legend tells us about an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time. He refused to worship the Roman gods and was imprisoned because he had secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman Emperor. According to those laws young people were forbidden to marry as they had to be free to be good warriors.

The third legend tells us that St. Valentine was a Christian priest who lived in Rome and was thrown in prison for his teachings. He died for his faith оn the 14th of February A.D.170. He was supposed to have cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness as well. But he was not noted for helping lovers in distress and was not the patron saint of lovers.

What did Roman Emperors force everyone to believe in?

What custom was there on the 14th of February?

What image had that god ?

Whom did young men choose?

Who refused to worship the Roman gods?

Why was the Italian bishop imprisoned?

What were young people forbidden to do according to those laws?

What was St. Valentine according to the third legend?

What did he die for?

VIII. Совершенствование навыков устной речи

And now let us read nice poems about love.

O MY LUVE'S LIKE A RED, RED, ROSE (Robert Burns)

O my luve's like a red, red, rose

That's newly sprung in June:

O my luve's like a melodie

That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in luve am I:

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a' the seas gang dry:

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt wi' the sun;

I will luve thee still, my dear,

Whill the sands o' luve shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve!

And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my Luve,

Tho' it were ten thousand mile.

MY BONNY

My Bonny is over the ocean,

My Bonny is over the sea,

My Bonny is over the ocean,

Oh, bring back my Bonny to me.

Bring back, bring back,

Oh, bring back my Bonny to me, to my,

Bring back, bring back,

Oh, bring back my Bonny to me.

Oh, winds, you blow over the ocean,

Oh, winds, you blow over the sea,

Oh, winds, you blow over the ocean,

Oh, bring back my Bonny to me.

SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY ( LORD BYRON)

SHE walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that 's best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes:

Thus mellow'd to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impair'd the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o'er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express

How pure, how dear their dwelling-place

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

IX. Подведение итогов урока (учитель оценивает работу учащихся, выставляет оценки и задает домашнее задание)
