What kinds of drugs are used by some people in sport?
Anabolic steroids resemble male hormones. "Anabolic" means "to build up" - in this case to build up muscles. Body-builders use anabolic steroids in order to look good in competitions.

Stimulants make you feel full of energy and confidence, but they can also make you feel more aggressive. They are illegal and officially banned in sport.

Taking substances to improve sports achievements is not new. Athletes in ancient Egypt drank a special mixture with boiled donkey hoof, in ancient Greece a special diet of figs was used.

All of these things can cause severe health problems including liver cancer, heart disease and even death. And yet athletes still abuse their bodies. Some of them will pay a very high price for winning.

Last summer a lot of Russian sportsmen were banned from the Summer Olympic games in Brazil because of the drugs which were found in their blood. Many kinds of drugs are used by athletes competing in sports all over the world and it is much discussed nowadays. Some are used to build muscles or to give the athlete extra energy. Others kill pain of injuries or calm nerves.
