Hello, everyone. Welcome to our show.
-
Hi, there. Happy Valentine's Day!
-
I can see so many beautiful girls here!
-
Hey, hey. Don't get carried away.
-
Well, all the girls are wonderful, but you are the best for me. It's high time we were Valentines. Rain or shine, you'll always be mine! Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, so are you. Be my Valentine!
-
By the way, why is it called Valentine's Day, not William's or John's or Robert's?
-
Oh, I've got some information and can share it with you! There were two priests of the early Christian church, both were called Valentines and they lived approximately at the same time. One Valentine would secretly marry young couples against the will of the Roman emperor Claudius who believed that single young men made better soldiers.
Another Valentine would not worship the gods decreed by the Roman emperor. For that he was put to prison. By the way, this priest could perform miracles. He had cured lots of people. He was able to cure the jailer's daughter on the eve of his execution. He also sent her a card and signed "Your Valentine"
-
Now I see why a Valentine card is a symbol of St. Valentine's Day. On this day we show our affection for the people we like, love or adore. Another symbol of the day is an angel.
-
Thanks, now it's high time to begin our contest. We invite 4 young ladies and 4 young gentlemen. Take these hearts and find your partners. Choose your numbers and sit down, please. Now we have 4 couples, 4 teams.
-
Let me introduce our jury.
-
It's time for the teams to present themselves. The first contest is called Introductions
I Introductions
B. Now while the jury are putting their heads together to decide how many points to give to each team lets listen to some legends about St. Valentine's Day.
Pupil 1-One of the customs the young people liked was name-drawing. The names of the Roman girls were written on slips of paper and put into a jar. Each young man drew a slip, The girl whose name he drew was to be his sweetheart for a year.
Pupil 2-St.Valentine's Day came to be celebrated in most of the countries of Europe. Sicily is an island in the south of Italy. There a young girl would stand at her window for half an hour before sunrise. If no one went by, she believed she would not be married that year. If she saw a man pass, she thought she would marry him or someone looked like him.
Pupil 3-In Germany the girls tried another way of learning whom they would marry. They planted onions on St. Valentine' Day. Each girl tagged several day onions with the names of young men. She put the onions in a corner near the fire place. She thought she would marry the man whose onion sprouted first.
Pupil 4-Valentine parties became popular in many wealthy French homes. The young ladies and gentlemen put verses into a valentine box. They put their names into the box too, on different slips. Then each person drew a name and a verse. The gentleman read his verse to the lady. She read hers to him. Often the verse didn't match the person and everyone laughed.
-
Thank you very much for your interesting stories. Could the jury announce the score, please?
-
Here comes the next contest. Take these hearts. You'll have some time to think what you'll say to your sweetheart.

Fortune teller: There was another tradition with the girls in England to learn about their future husbands. If a young girl saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow she would marry a poor man but would be happy. If she saw a goldfinch she would marry a millionaire. So, choose a card with a picture of a bird and you'll learn about your future husband.
A. Could the jury announce the score, please? And this contest is called The portrait of an ideal girl. Find as many adjectives in this chart as you can.
