MARCO POLO

In 1298 a Venetian adventurer Marco Polo wrote a book about his travels In the Far East. Even Columbus nearly 200 years later consulted this book.

Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy in 1254. His father and uncles were merchants who travelled to distinct lands to trade. In 1271 they took Marco wiih lliem.

From Venice the Polos sailed to Palestine. They crossed the deserts of Pcrcia and Afghanistan, mounted the hights of Pamirs.Early in 1275 when Marco was 21 they arrived at Kublai Khan's count at Cambalue in Peking, China. J

The khan of Persia asked Kublai Khan for a young Mongol Princess for a bride. The Polos decided that the Princess's journey should be guarded by IXperienced travellers. Because of the danger from robbers and enemies of the Khan a great fleet of ships was built.

fin 1292 the fleet sailed with the Polos, the princess and 600 noblemen. Theships visited Ceylon and India and touched the East African coast.

Неопределенный АРТИКЛЬ - article ['a:tikl] -ставится перед существительным в ед.числе. Артикли бывают:

1. Неопределенный (in'definite article) - "а" [Ә] - - a book, a pen , a woman, a boy; если существительное начинается с гласной буквы то артикль меняется на an : an apple - яблоко, an egg - яйцо

2. определенный артикль ('definite article) "the" [бә] - "theos-►this" - это

От местоимения и ставится перед существительными: the boy - мальчик, my mother=the mother мама.

III. The main part: THOMAS COOK

Thomas Cook was born in 1809 and lived in Leicester in the centre of] England. Thomas Cook was the first person who developed mass tourism. Many excursions and tours, which opened up the words of travelling fori pleasure to the middle classes, were organized by him| Cook believed than travel would broaden the mind. His success of the travel business wasj phenomenal.

The English Channel, France and Switzerland, Egypt were popular] destinations for Cook's tours./When he reached the age of 63 he still desired to travel round the globe. So, in the early 1870 the first round the world tour was organized.^He set off from Liverpool on the steamship Oceanic. He was impressed by the American railroad, its open carriages, sleeping cars, on­board toilets and efficient baggage handing. Japan delighted him by its "beauty and rich fertility". He was shocked by "narrow filthy streets" of China and had another culture shock in India, which was also "filthy and revolting". By the time he left Bombay for Egypt he was tired and in 1873 wrote to "The Times" that he wouldn't travel over the world again that "after 32 years of travelling with the view of making travelling easy, cheap and safe for others and ought to rest" he wrote.

THE UK

I. The UK is the shortened word of the United Kingdom of Great Britain
hi til Northern Ireland. Great Britain includes England, Scotland, and Wales
,nul Northern Ireland. Although Britain is a unitary state, the countries of
Britain have separate national identities, variations in culture and tradition.

England is a lowland country with the Pennine Chain, the Cumbrian BV Minlains and the Yorkshire moorlands in the north.

Wales is a country of hills and mountains. Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis (1,343 m, 4,406 ffHs in the central highlands of Scotland. Northern Itrland is at its nearest point only 21 km (13 miles) from Scotland.

London Sightseeing Tour

London is the capital of the UK. There are a lot of interesting places to see in London. For example: Trafalgar Square. There is a statue of Admiral Nel­son who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafal­gar in 1805. He is a national English hero. There is no traffic in the square.

Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is on the top she is at home. Here you can see changing the guard. It happens every day at 11.30 a. m.

House of Parliament is the seat of the British Government. It's a very large building with beautiful towers. Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall. The clock was made under his direction.

Westminster Abbey is a Royal Church. Here you can see many tombs of British Kings and Queens and other famous people, such as: Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, and Thomas Hardy.

Tower of London was a fortress, a royal palace, later a prison. Now it is a museum. Many tourists come to visit London and see all these places.

Britain has a population of about 59 million people. The great majority, 49.3 million live in England; Scotland has just over 5 million people, Wales 2,9 million and Northern Ireland about 1,7 million.

England is the most densely populated, with 373 people per sq. (square) km, and Scotland is the least, with 67 people per sq. km. The great majority of people are concentrated in towns and cities.

The average age of women having children has risen to over 28 years in lingland and Wales.

Life expectancy for men in Britain is about 74 years and for women 79 years. The general death rate is 10.4 per 1,000 of the population.

Britain has one of the highest marriage and divorce rates in the Huropean Union. There are 309,000 marriages each year in Britain, of which about 40 per cent are remarriages of one or both parties. Of the population aged 16 or over in England and Wales 55 per cent are married, 28 per cent are single, 9 per cent are widowed and 8 per cent are divorced. The average for first marriages in England and Wales is now 29 for men and 27 for women.

There is a growing number of non-married relationships.

ELDERLY PEOPLE

The retirement age is 65 for men and 60 for women in Britain. Most elderly people in Britain live healthy and independent lives. Nearly all want to be a part of the community, living in their own homes. Adult educational and recreational courses are well attended by elderly people.

In fact, only about 5 per cent of people aged over 65 in Britain live In an institutional accommodation. These services may include advice and help from visiting social workers. Day centres and lunch clubs are very popular among older people as they provide a hot meal and laundry.

YOUNG PEOPLE

The home is the central focus of most young people's lives in Britain, particularly for those who are still attending schools. The majority rely upon their home environment as a place of security and upon their parents as the main providers of food, money and general advice. Young people spend much of their leisure time in the home with other members of their family or with friends.

After the home, school is the main social environment.

The social education of young people aged 11-25 is also promoted by the Youth Service in Britain.

Youth clubs and centers are the most common types of Youth Service.

The Queen was born in London on 21 April 1926, the first child of King George and Queen Elizabeth. Five weeks later she was christened Eliza­beth Alexandra Mary in the chapel at Buckingham Palace. The Princess's early years were spent at 145 Piccadilly, in London and the country homes of grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary.

EDUCATION

Princess Elizabeth was edu­cated at home with Princess Margaret, her younger sister. PRINCE PHILLIP

Prince Philip was born on 10 June 1921. He was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece.

The Prince came to Britain at an early age to be educated. He attended a school, in Scotland, and the Royal Naval College. During the Second World War he served at the sea.

The Prince plays an active part in national life and acts as president or patron of some 800 organizations.

The Prince is a keen sportsman.
