Introduction.

What is travel? Why do people travel?

Travelling is a way to discover and experience the world. People travel all the time for different reasons and purposes, and they also travel differents ways.

A famous English writer of the 19th century Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: "For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move".

"I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine" said Caskie Stinnett, the American writer.

"Don't tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you have traveled" are the words of Mohammed.

All these quotations prove that people have never managed to live fully and happily without traveling and thus experiencing the world.

All this and much more will be discussed in our project.

The purposes and objectives of our project are the following:

  • Talk about travelling and many other things related to this concept

  • Conduct a questionnaire to the students of our school about travelling

  • Take result of our project.

Chapter 1. What is travelling? Means of Travelling.

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays and weekends on travelling. They travel to see other continents, countries, modern cities; they travel to enjoy beautiful places. The term "travel" originates from the Old French word travail. The term also covers all the activities performed during a travel (movement). A person who travels is spelled "traveler" in the United States, and "traveller" in the United Kingdom.

Reasons for travelling include recreation, tourism or vacationing, research travel for the gathering of information, for holiday to visit people, volunteer travel for charity, migration to begin life somewhere else, religious pilgrimages and mission trips, business travel, trade, commuting, and other reasons, such as to obtain health care or fleeing war or for the enjoyment of traveling. Travelling is always interesting: to discover new things, meet different people, see ancient towns and buildings. In new towns tourists visit different galleries, museums, theatres and shops. People take pictures of their travel, so that they remember about this holiday.

People travel differently: by car, by plane, by ship, by train, by bike and other ways. Usually, they travel by plane or by train. The reason is because it is very fast. All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. People choose the type of transport, which suits them best. It all depends on their plans and directions. However cheap or expensive, comfortable or long-term means of traveling can be, the main is the question of safety.

These are three main statistics which may be used to compare the safety of various forms of travel (based on a DETR survey in October 2000):

Bus: 4.3

Rail: 20

Van: 20

Car: 40

Foot: 40

Water: 90

Air: 117

Bicycle: 170

Motorcycle: 1640

Air: 30.8

Water: 50

Van: 60

Car: 130

Foot: 220

Bicycle: 550

Motorcycle: 4840

Rail: 0.6

Van: 1.2

Water: 2.6

Car: 3.1

Bicycle: 44.6

Foot: 54.2

Motorcycle: 108.9

So, one should think twice before planning a holiday, especially to a distant place!

Chapter 2. Famous Places to Visit.

Considering a great desire of people of different ages to travel and discover new places and also a variety of places in the world, it's no wonder that more and more countries and cities, deserts and mountains, seas and rivers are revealed by tourists.

The most famous are still those that are closer to us, that is Europe.

France has always attracted travelers for its romantic atmosphere. And it's not only the capital. You can discover famous Mont-Saint-Michel, an island off the coast of Normandy topped by a spectacular 12th century abbey, visit the village of Beuvron in Normandy. A unique day tour to famous places in Normandy can cost 165 euros.

Famous places to visit in Italy include the several sea beaches of this country, historical cities of Italy which played major role in the social and political lives of the Italian nation. They also include various archaeological sites located in many parts of the country. In the Italian capital Rome one can see the remnants of the famous Coliseum.

Another popular place is Berlin in Germany, which is essentially the modern day New York. With several important and interesting tourist spots to visit, the city is one that is known for its glamour. Some of the places where you can pay a visit when you visit the famous places in Germany include galleries, snack shacks, gourmet temples, museums, Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, and Brandenburg Gate etc.

There is no other place in the world that holds more mystery than the country of Egypt. The smell of the mysticism of the ancient Egyptians still lingers over the place. This ancient atmosphere seems to fill its each and every nook and cranny with secrets yet untold. Perhaps there is nothing more mysterious, and much more worthy of seeing in Egypt than the esteemed Great Pyramids of Giza. They are the pyramids of Khufu, Kafhre, and Menkaura. These perfectly shaped structures leaves everyone in awe and in wonder about how precisely they were made, considering that the ancient Egyptians had no advanced technology to work with.

And one cannot forget the main place to visit, especially if you study English. It's London with its well-known sights starting with Big Ben or London Eye and never ending. It's been also said for years that British cuisine doesn't exactly compete with other cuisines you can find in Europe because…it's terrible. But all jokes aside, London is an incredible city with plenty of excellent food choices. From eating in a pub to choosing a trendy restaurant, London doesn't lack places to place hunger at bay. London is a multi-cultural city and food follows the trend. You can find pretty ethnic cuisine you can reckon about: Fish&Chips, English breakfast, Ploughman's Lunch Pie and Mash Bangers.

The approaching holiday season always makes us think about how this year the holiday will be held. In connection with this, we build great plans, dream where to go and where to rest, in advance, with trembling imagine ourselves to have chocolate tan in the shadows of palm trees and the sea.

The most popular destinations to do it among those that are still considered as exotic are:

the Maldives, thought as one of the best exotic destinations. All of the islands (or rather, atolls) look like a selection with blue lagoons, beaches and unique vegetation. For a decent rest there is everything: peace and calm, beautiful nature.

The United Arab Emirates is one of the most interesting and attractive states, entailing a magnet of tourists, especially Europeans, and promising them a great vacation and fun entertainment. Tours in the UAE are at the peak of popularity all year round. The country that managed to so radically transform in a few decades, in itself deserves respect and tourist attention, even if we ignore the fact that today the Gulf resorts are among the most modern and fashionable in the world. A holiday in the UAE can be considered as an adventure, because everything there is so strange and curious ... Judge for yourself: the state, previously completely undeveloped, after the discovery of rich oil deposits, revealed like a rose bud, just won from the narrow strip of desert living space, adjacent to the coast and , the most interesting - it is thriving and developing at a frantic pace! Magic, and more!

Chapter 3. Books About Travelling.

The topic of travelling is so popular and modern that there are a lot of books the plots of which are based on the topic of traveling.

The pupil of Class 9A Jury Nadrov writes: "I like books on travel and adventure. As a child, my mother read the book of Daniel Defoe "Robinson Crusoe" and then I read it by myself".

Defoe's famous novel (1719) tells us of a man's shipwreck on a deserted island and his adventures. The author based part of his narrative on the story of the Scottish castaway Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years stranded on the island of Juan Fernandez.

Jury Nadrov considers: "Interesting books on travel are also the following: E.Buyanova "Fighters accidents", "Around the World" by V.Golovnina, "North Pole. South Pole" by R.Piri and R.Amundsen."

One summer I read the book "Lenka Panteleev."

Проект на тему Travelling and Students of Our School.

The author wrote an autobiographical novel. As a little boy, he was left without parents and walked almost through the whole territory of Russia, was a homeless child, stole, then met with good people, learned, became a writer. In this book, there was so much war, death, and a lot of humor and jokes. It is read very easily, and I was sorry when the book ended. I became acquainted with the life and the history of our country distant to me as seen through the eyes of a child-waif".

There is really a great variety of authors, classic or modern, Russian or foreign, who wrote about travelling or at least touched upon this topic in their works.

A bright example of classical works is the following. Two famous books by Mark Twain, the American writer of the 19th century, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" present a colourful description of adventures and travels of the boys. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is an 1876 novel about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the Town of "St. Petersburg", inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (or, in more recent editions, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) is a novel, first published in England in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective). It is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River.

Asterix or The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic books written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). The series first appeared in French in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. As of 2012, 34 comic books in the series have been released.

Among the latest we can speak about a number of books that are later filmed and become quite popular, with the main character travelling throughout the world: James Bond, code name 007, a fictional character created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming, who featured him in twelve novels and two short story collections.

Six other authors have written authorised Bond novels or novelizations since Fleming's death in 1964: Kingsley Amis, Christopher Wood, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, Sebastian Faulks, and Jeffery Deaver; a new novel, written by William Boyd, is planned for release in 2013. Additionally, Charlie Higson wrote a series on a young James Bond, and Kate Westbrook wrote three novels based on the diaries of a recurring series character, Moneypenny.

"The DaVinci Code", a 2003 mystery-detective novel written by Dan Brown; and many others.

Chapter 4. Films About Travelling.

A well-known plot as we have assured is the one mentioned above: Robinson Crusoe.

In the 20th century there were shot a number of different films based on this plot:

  1. a 1927 silent film titled "Robinson Crusoe";

  2. the Soviet 3D film "Robinzon Kruzo" was produced in 1946;

Проект на тему Travelling and Students of Our School.Проект на тему Travelling and Students of Our School.

  1. Luis Buñuel directed "Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" starring Dan O'Herlihy, released in 1954;

  1. Walt Disney later modernized the novel with Lt. "Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.", featuring Dick Van Dyke. Peter O'Toole and Richard Roundtree co-starred in a 1975 film "Man Friday" which satirically portrayed Crusoe as incapable of seeing his dark-skinned companion as anything but an inferior creature, while Friday is more enlightened.

  2. In 1988, Aidan Quinn portrayed Robinson Crusoe in the film "Crusoe".

  1. "Robinson Crusoe", a 1997 film directed by Rod Hardy and George T. Miller and stars Pierce Brosnan playing Robinson Crusoe in this adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic novel.

Variations on the theme include the 1954 "Miss Robin Crusoe", with a female castaway, played by Amanda Blake, and a female Friday, and the 1964 film "Robinson Crusoe on Mars", starring Paul Mantee, with an alien Friday portrayed by Victor Lundin. The 2000 film "Cast Away", with Tom Hanks as a FedEx employee stranded on an Island for many years, also borrows much from the Robinson Crusoe story.

There were also television versions, such as:

  1. In 1964 a French film production crew made a 13 part serial of "The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe". It starred Robert Hoffman. The black and white series was dubbed into English and German.

  2. In 1981 Czechoslovakian director and animator Stanislav Látal made a version of the story under the name "Dobrodružství Robinsona Crusoe, námořníka z Yorku" (The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, a sailor from York) combining traditional and stop-motion animation.

  3. In the mid-1990s there was a humorous French cartoon called "Robinson Sucroe". In the cartoon, Robinson was a failed journalist for the New York Herald.

  4. The 2003 French TV movie starred Pierre Richard as Robinson.

  5. In 2008, a television series titled "Crusoe" aired for 12 episodes. It was based loosely on the novel and was not renewed for a second season.

Other films worth seeing and showing travelling from different angles are:

Bangkok Hilton, a three-part Australian mini-series, made in 1989 by Kennedy Miller Productions and directed by Ken Cameron, starring Nicole Kidman, shows a fictional Bangkok prison in which the protagonist is imprisoned, a mordant reference to Hanoi Hilton, the prison known as such used by North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

The Hobbit, a series of three epic fantasy adventure films directed, co-written and produced by Peter Jackson and based on J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel "The Hobbit". The films are, by subtitle, An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and There and Back Again (2014).

Back to the Future is a 1985 American science fiction adventure comedy film. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis, written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale, produced by Steven Spielberg. The film tells the story of Marty McFly, a teenager who is accidentally sent back in time from 1985 to 1955. He meets his future-parents in high school and accidentally attracts his future mother's romantic interest. Marty must repair the damage to history by causing his parents-to-be to fall in love, and with the help of scientist Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, he must find a way to return to 1985.

The student of Class 9A Anar Akperov writes: "I want to tell you about 5 best movies about travel:

1. "Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark"

The character first appeared in the 1981 film "Raiders of the Lost Ark", to be followed by "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" in 1984, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" in 1989, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" from 1992 to 1996, and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" in 2008.

2. "Diaries of the Motorcyclist" (2004), a film about the journeys of Ce Guevara through Latin America.

3. "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" (1987)

Проект на тему Travelling and Students of Our School.Проект на тему Travelling and Students of Our School.

No trip is complete without travel - and, as we know, there is little in this world so provoking for comic situations, as a forced coexistence of two strangers. It bears proof - one of the best films of John Hughes, the story of a hard return character Steve Martin from New York to Chicago on the eve of Thanksgiving.

4. The Russian film "How I spent this summer" by Alexey Popogrebsky shot in 2008-2009, about two people working and trying to survive in extreme conditions in the North Pole.

5. "True Friends" («Верные друзья»), a comedy directed by Mikhail Kalatozov about three old friens who had grown up and set off for traveling to face a lot of adventures.

There are also people, professional travelers and researches, who leave their scientific investigations for the whole humanity to know and cherish. A bright example is Jacques-Yves Cousteau (commonly known in English as Jacques Cousteau; 11 June 1910 - 25 June 1997), a French naval officer, explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water.

We must say that traveling has become so popular with people that lately there have appeared a lot of those who are not professional writers or directors, but who cannot imagine their life without traveling and they share their experience with others, either through the Internet or by means of books or films. One of such people so much talked of in the Internet is Alexey Korovin, a businessman who in 2010 indulged into making films and books based on the motives of his adventures. This person has his own website to share his experience: a-korovin.com</</u>.

Chapter 5. Our Research "Travelling and Pupils of Our School".

We offered a questionnaire to the students of our school about travelling. Our purpose was to find out the opinion of students of different ages about travelling and their experience in it.

Questionnaire/Анкета:

  1. Do you like travelling? Любишь ли ты путешествовать?

  2. What does travelling give you? Что (какие возможности) дают тебе путешествия?

  3. What means of transport for travelling do you use? Каким видом транспорта ты пользуешься для путешествий?

  4. Who do you travel with? С кем тебе нравится путешествовать? (семья, друзья, одноклассники, один)

  5. What is the place that impressed you most? Why? Какое из посещенных мест тебе запомнилось больше всего? Чем?

  6. What is the place you dream to visit? Why? Какое место ты мечтаешь посетить? Почему?

  7. Do you use English in your travelling? In what situations? Пользуешься ли ты английским языком во время путешествий? В каких ситуациях?

These are the results we got:

We interviewed 100 people from classes: 3A, 3G, 4A, 4B, 5A, 7A, 8A, 9A. The students gave the following answers to the questions of the questionnaire.

1) Do you like travelling?

Yes - 95 students,

No - 3,

Not very - 2.

2) What does travelling give you?

The most popular answer was "I Learn something new and interesting about the world" - 46 people;

Leisure - 11;

Getting to know the city and the country, the history, the traditions - 9;

Joy, pleasure - 9;

Knowledge, experience - 6;

Enjoying nature - 3;

Seeing the sights - 2;

Getting to know new people and meeting friends - 2;

Interest in the world - 1;

Rememberings - 1;

This way I learn English - 1;

"I am developing" - 1;

"It Gives me all" - 1;

Strength and courage - 1;

Freedom - 1;

It gives the feeling on top of the world - 1.

There were still pupils who were hesitating and said:

"I do not know" - 3 and "It gives me nothing" - 1.

Among the answers to this question, many students gave several options, we took notice of the first presented in the list.

And there were a few guys (5-6 people), who did not understand the question and answered that travelling is given to them by mom or dad, their work and money.

3) What means of transport for travelling do you use?

The most popular answers included such means of traveling as by car, plane or train.

There are also these:

Boat - 1

Private airplane - 1

Electrical train - 1

Bike -3 people

Truck - 1

Subway - 1

Scooter -1

Ship -3

No transport -1.

We appreciate the sense of humour of some people, it shows our students are always in a good mood and it proves that travelling does give them positive emotions.

4) Who do you travel with?

Both family and friends - about 43 people;

Family - 30;

Friends - about 20;

Classmates - 6;

Alone - 1.

We can clearly see that students love and value both their family and friends. Of course, the older the person is, the more they choose friends for traveling together.

5) What is the place that impressed you most? Why?

The students referred to the countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Poland, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Spain, Slovakia, Germany, Bulgaria, Thailand, Japan, Finland; such cities as: Anapa, Tbilisi, Rome, Kazan, Gelendzhik, Krasnodar, Moscow, Paris, Milan, Nizhny Novgorod; also the Black Sea, the Azov Sea.

But we could also find quite rare responses:

early fishing - "I caught there a carp" (Alexander Shcherbakov 4B),

museum Zhestovo - "there's fun and you can make yourself a tray" (4A Abrahamyan Marina),

"when my family and I went on a picnic, there we had a real fun"(4A Georgadze David), the cave (7A Vitaly Nosov),

a paintball club in Germany (5A Leonov Daniel),

Vietnam - an unusual butterfly (4B Nalysheva Aina),

a camp - "it was interesting" (3G Golikova Xenia,)

Red Square - "it is very beautiful" (3A Lutsenko Sofia),

Kolomna (7A Denis Lobanov),

Kiev - delicious food (9A Kazakevich Leonid),

Tula - museums (9A Moskalenko Andrew).

6) What is the place you dream to visit? Why?

The answers varied: Miami, London, rainforests, Greece, islands, Japan, Cote d'Azur, Egypt, India, America, Africa, Australia, Goa, a chocolate factory, the jungles, Kuskovo.

Answers:

England, London - 12

Paris, France - 12

Russia -1

Chechnya - 1

"no place" - 4 people

"I do not know" - 5.

7) Do you use English in your travelling? In what situations?

Yes - 40 (when ordering a meal in a cafe, a shop, when talking to an English-speaking person, in the camp);

Sometimes - 7 people (in the store or to ask for directions, if you need to buy a soda or ice cream)

No - 53.

"When I went to Grushinskiy festival, I was talking nearly English with an

Englishman" - wrote a student of class 4B Nesterenko Natalia.

Thus, the results we got are not really surprising. Travelling is something everybody likes, or at least most of us (95%). We are sure those who do not will reveal its taste in the future. The students still prefer to travel with their families or friends by traditional means of transport. They still want to visit England and France, as well as other popular today destinations. And 40% use the English language in their traveling, which proves the need for the language.

Conclusion.

So, as you see, travelling is very interesting to do. Every man should go where they want. We are told only about a small part of the interesting places in the world. In fact, there is much more. And they are all worth seeing. Also, on the subject of travel there have been shot a lot of films and written many books.

People like travelling. Even those, who have never visited, for example, another country, still want to travel.

We would like to finish with the words of several famous people who loved and appreciated travelling. But we would also wish to add: We hope you like our project, and we hope you will always be travelling.

Quotations about travelling:

  • "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." - Lao Tzu.

  • "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain.

  • Without travel "I would have wound up a little ignorant white Southern female, which was not my idea of a good life." - Lauren Hutton.

  • "Traveling is almost like talking with men of other centuries." - René Descartes.

  • "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." - Henry Miller.

  • "A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it." - John Steinbeck.

  • "If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home." - James Michener.

  • "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." - St.Augustine.
