Scene 1

Storyteller: Once upon a time there lived a cock, a mouse and and a red hen on the hill. They lived in a lovely small house. In the forest there was another little house. There lived a big fox and four little foxes in it.

Hen:

Good morning, good morning, good morning to you,

Good morning, my dear, I'm glad to see you.

Cock: The morning is too hot!

Mouse: The morning is too cold!

Вылезают из-под одеял и идут на кухню.

Hen: Who'll get some wood for the fire?

Cock: I shan't

Mouse: I shan't

Hen (протягивая ведро): Who'll bring some water from the well?

Cock: I can't

Mouse: I can't

Hen: Who'll have breakfast?

Cock and Mouse (together): We will

Садятся и завтракают. После того, как позавтракали.

Hen: Who'll clean the table?

Cock: I shan't

Mouse: I shan't

Hen: Who'll wash up

Cock: I can't

Mouse: I can't

Hen (вздыхая): Then I'll do it myself. (To the Cock and the Mouse) and you go to your bedroom and make your beds.

Петушок и мышка уходят, но не заправляют постель, а вновь ложатся и засыпают.

Scene 2

На сцене домик в лесу, где живёт старый лис и лисята. Утро. Лисята выпрыгивают из постелей и подбегают к постели, где спит старый лис. Тормошат его.

Little foxes (together):

You, who are the oldest,

You, who are the tallest,

Don't you think you ought to help

The youngest an the smallest?

Old Fox: The morning is too cold, and I am too old.

Little Fox 1: Oh, Father, we are so hungry!

Little Fox 2: We had nothing to eat yesterday.

Little Fox 3: And only half a chicken the day before.

Little Fox 4: And only two little ducks the day before that.

Old Fox: OK. In the field I saw a house. And in taht house there live a cock, a hen and a mouse. And they are fat.

Лисята радостно бегают по дому.

Scene 3

На сцене домик в поле, где живут курочка, петушок и мышонок. Петушок и мышонок лежат в своих постелях и спят. Курочка моет посуду на кухне. К окну спальни подходит лис и стучится. Мышонок приоткрывает глаза.

Mouse: Who is that?

Cock: Go and look, if you want to know.

Mouse: I think it's out friend, the little bird. (Подходит к окну и открывает его.)

В комнату врывается старый лис. Хватает мышонка, а затем петушка и запихивает их в мешок.

Mouse: Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!

Cock: Cock-a-doodle do! Cock-a-doodle do!

На их крики прибегает курочка.

Hen: Cluck! Cluck! Cluck!

Но лис хватает и её и запихивает в мешок. Довольный, потирая руки, он осматривает дом, завязывает верёвкой мешок и ложится отдохнуть.

Old Fox (зевая): Today is a lucky day for me. But I am old and I am very tired. I'll sleep for a little while. (Ложится на постель и засыпает.)

Storyteller: Soon the Old Fox fell fast asleep. And what about our friends: the Cock, the Mouse and the Hen? The Cock and the mouse were very frightened. But the Hen had a pair of scissors, a needle and a thread with her. She cut a little hole in the sack...

Hen: Quick. Creep throught this hole. (Вылезают из мешка.) Let's put something heavy into it.

Кладут в мешок камушки, и курочка зашивает дырку в мешке. Затем они прячутся под кровати. И тут просыпается лис.

Old Fox: Dear, dear! Now the Sun is high in the sky. I've had enough time for rest. It's time to go home to my little foxes. (Трогает мешок, взваливает на спину и выходит.)

Убедившись, что лис ушёл, мышонок, петушок и курочка вылезают и закрывают окно, через которое влез лис, и дверь, через которую он вышел. Радуются и поют:

Old Fox lay in the summer sun

Much too lazy to rise and run.

He flapped an ear

At a buzzing fly,

He winked a half-opened

Sleeply eye.

He whimpered a bit.

From force of habit,

While he lazily dreamed

Of chasing a rabbit.

But Old Fox happily lay in the sun

Much too lazy to rise and run
