Цель: Формирование и развитие коммуникативной культуры (языковой, речевой и социокультурной компетенций) английского языка.

Задачи:

  • Практическая: обобщение изученного лексико-грамматического материала, систематизация знаний.

  • Развивающая: продолжать знакомство с обычаями и традициями англоязычных стран, развивать навыки самостоятельного поиска и подбора информации; развивать память и речевые навыки.

  • Обучающая: совершенствовать навыки аудирования и устной речи.

  • Воспитательная: расширять кругозор о стране изучаемого языка, воспитывать уважение к иноязычной культуре.

Участники: учащиеся группы 10класса.

Оформление: рисунки с изображением индейки- символа праздника, рисунки индейцев, название праздника из разноцветных букв, цветы.

Ход урок

  1. Под музыку входят ученики, одетые в костюмы индейцев.

The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621. They came from England for religious freedom. They sailed from Plymoth, England, on September 16, 1620. Their ship was called "the Mayflower". They landed at Plymouth Rock, in Massachusetts, on December 26, 1620. The first winter was a terrible time. There was much sickness and starvation. Native Indians taught the Pilgrims how to plant, to fish, to hunt and how to survive in America. The crops did well, and in the fall of 1621 the Pilgrims had a great harvest. They were very thankful and decided to celebrate with a feast. The Pilgrims invited their Indian friends to share this Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving Day comes on the 4th Thursday in November. It's a legal holiday celebrated throughout the USA. People of all faiths celebrate this day. They give thanks for the many good things in their lives. This is a family holiday. Families come together from near and far. In some places special religious services are held in the morning. Then comes the traditional feast. Turkey with stuffing is main dish. It is served with sweet potatoes, squashy, cranberry, sauce, and pumpkin pie. Apple cider is the drink of the day. Football is the most popular game on the day. For many schools the Thanksgiving game is the most important one of the year. Usually there are several football games to watch on TV. Macy's department store holds its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Celebrities, floats, bands, and ballons shaped like famous story book and cartoon characters appear in the parade. Santa Claus arrives at the end. His coming marks the beginning of the Christmas.

Stores, classrooms, and homes are decorated with turkeys, pilgrims, Indians, wreaths of dried flowers and vegetables.

The United States of America are the fourth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada, and China). It occupies the southern part of North America. It stretches(протягивается) from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It also includes Alaska in the north and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The total area of the country is about nine and half million square kilometers.

The USA borders on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south. It also has a sea-border with Russia.

The USA is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia, a special federal area where Washington, the capital of the country, is situated. The population of the country is about 250 million.

If we look at the map of the USA, we can see lowlands (равнины)and mountains. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada. The highest peak is Mount McKinley which is located in Alaska. America's largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. The Great Lakes on the border with Canada are the largest and the deepest (самый глубокий)in the USA.

The climate of the country varies greatly (быть разнообразным).The coldest regions are in the North. The climate of Alaska is arctic; the climate of the central part is continental; the south has a subtropical climate. Hot winds (горячие ветры) blowing from the Gulf of Mexico often bring typhoons. The climate along the Pacific coast is much warmer than that of the Atlantic coast (побережье).

The USA is highly developed industrial country. It is the world's leading producer of copper (медь) and oil(нефть) and the world's second producer of iron ore (железная руда)and coal(уголь). Among the most important manufacturing industries (отрасль обрабатывающей промышленности) are aircraft, cars, textiles, radio and television sets, armaments, furniture and paper industries. The largest cities of the USA are: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, San Francisco, Washington, and others.

The District of Columbia is the territory of the national capital of the USA, Washington, with its own laws and regulations. Washington, D.C. is situated on both banks of the Potomac River, between the two states, Maryland and Virginia. This place was chosen by the first American President George Washington. In 1790 George Washington laid the corner-stone of the Capitol where the Congress sits. The place was called the District of Columbia in honor of ( в честь) Columbus, the discoverer of America. Washington has been the federal capital (столица) since 1800.

Some of the best known universities are located in Boston. The oldest university in the USA, Harvard University, was founded on 1636.
