LESSON NOTES.

The theme of the lesson : Great Scientists.

Information about students: 9v (12 students)

Aim: by the end of the lesson the students will be able to work with the text ''The Man and His Work''; to speak about some scientists and present their project works.

Objectives: by the end of the lesson the students will be able to discuss the text, to speak about great scientists.

Materials and equipment: students' project works; a computer; text-books; a tape-recorder; scientists' portraits.

LESSON PROCEDURE.

WARM UP.

Today we are going to get some interesting and important information about science, technology and great scientists.

Now listen to the questions and answer them:

All knowledge people have is traditionally divided into arts and sciences. What do arts study and what do sciences study?

What great discoveries in history of human civilization can you name?

Some people say ''The world of science has no borders''. In what way is it true?

How, in your view, will science and technology help to change the life on the planet in future?

What in your opinion does a scientist do? Give an example.

Would you like to become a scientist? If you would, what field of research would you choose?

READING FOR COUNTRY STUDIES.

You had to read and translate the text ''The Man and His Work'' at home and be ready for the discussion of it.

Listen to the text ''The Man and His Work'', CD 23.

Now look at ex. 12 (A), page 144 and say which of the two is right.

Let's try to make up some questions on the text and answer them. Try to ask different types of questions.

P 1: What century gave us the invention of airplane, helicopter?

P 2: The 20 th century .

P 3: What did A.BELL do after graduating from the university of London?

P 4: He taught the deaf.

P 5: What kind of experiments did A. Bell and his brother make?

P 6: They made experiments with the human voice.

P 7: Where did A. Bell first show his model of the telephone?

P 8: At a big exhibition in Philadelphia.

P 9: Why didn't Bell want to exhibit his invention?

P 10: Because he thought that his invention wasn't ready.

P 11: What did A. Bell receive the Centennial Prize for?

P 12: For both the multiple telegraph and the telephone.

In the text there are a lot of international words the meaning of which are easy to guess. Let's remember them and make up a list of such words on the blackboard one by one. Make sure that you read and translate them correctly.

expert assistant

patent model

radio transmitter

reactor prize

industry machine

synthetic automobile

position telephone

cylinder experiment

membrane telegraph…

zigzag

Now let's try to divide the text into five logical parts and give them names.

Pupils: 1. The need of Inventions.

2. Bell's Young Years.

3. Working on a Multiple Telegraph.

4. The Exhibition in Philadelphia.

5. The Fame.

PROJECT PRESENTATION WORK.

It's high time for our project presentation work. You had to prepare projects about great scientists. Today we are going to listen to and watch your computer versions.

Pupils' questions:

-Is D. Mendeleev the primary creator of the first version of periodic table of elements?

- What did Mendeleev predicted?

- Was D. Mendeleev awarded any prize for his book ''Or
