Durham

The history of Durham take the beginning from 995 when the monks living on the island in North Sea began to find safe shelter from terrible Vikings. At last these courageous people find such place at the river and in XI century built there the church. And then they built a fortress. Durham became a residence of bishop.

In 1093 the bishop ordered to begin building of new cathedral like Norman Cathedrals. This big temple was named after St. Coubertin.

Castle of Durham was found by William the Conqueror and was using for defence of Scotland's boundary. Later it used for residence of Durham's bishop and since 1837 it is the property of Durham's University.

The streets of town are straight and narrow. The most of houses was built in XVIII century. Over the Market's square the St. Nicola's church rises. This large temple is so great that tourists can't go away!
