Dear ladies and gentlemen!

  • You are welcome to our TV show where we always discuss exciting topics. Today's meeting isn't an exception. There are very interesting guests in our studio today. This is the American delegation. These people visit our country on an exchange program. They have different professions . They are teachers, historians, politicians, guides and people whose work is connected with culture. Today we have some questions to ask them. Let's begin our meeting.

America is a very wonderful country but we don't know much about it. The first question will be addressed to a historian. Every country has its name. There is no country without name. Every name has its own origin. Could you tell us about the origin of the name "America", please?

  • Yes, of course. Why is our country called "America"? For a while after the first voyage of Columbus in 1492, America was called "the New World". Later, it was decided by map-makers in Europe to name the New World after a man named Amerigo Vespucci. He was an Italian merchant and adventurer. He made three trips to the New World. Columbus became the first explorer to reach the mainland of South America in 1497. But Amerigo Vespucci soon wrote a book in which he claimed to have gone there in 1497. This was not true, but people didn't know for many years that Vespucci was lying.

Nowadays our country occupies a very large territory- 9.522.057sq. km

The population is about 2906,7 million people.

.The capital of our country is Washington D.C., named in honor of the first American President George Washington. There are 50 states in the USA. I love my country very much.

  • Thank you . The facts you told us about were very interesting.

Education is also one of the most important parts of our life. Every country has its own system of education. What about the educational system in the USA? What age does the education begin and what age does it finish?

  • When the child is 3-4 years old he can go to the nursery school. It's optional in America and mostly private. At the age of 5 children go to the kindergarten. The children spend a year there learning how to get along with others and preparing for the first grade. In some areas they begin to read, to write and to recognize numbers.

Most children enter the first grade of elementary school at the age of 5 or 6.In elementary school they are taught the basics of education- reading, writing, arithmetics. The curriculum is also enriched by such subjects as history, geography, art, music, science, PE.

When your child is 11, he goes to Middle School ( Junior High School ) and studies there till he is 14.

High School takes 4 years, at the age from 14 to 16. By finishing the 12th grade students have exams and get high school diploma. When students are in High School they study 4-5 major subjects ( Maths,English, Science ). There are a,so core courses and electives per year.

Elementary School, Middle School and High School are compulsory for all American children. These schools are also divided into public and private. There is also Home Schooling in America, about 300.000 children are educated by parents.

The Higher Education is voluntary. Students can choose between college or university. In college students study for 2 years and get Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. In university students study 3,4 or 5 years. It depends on university they choose and degree they want to get. Universities are state and private in America. The most popular are Harvard in Massachusetts,( for men mainly ). It was founded in 1636. Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1746 and Yale , Connecticut, founded

  • Thank you very much. Your story was very interesting and new for us.

Let's speak about politics. Political life is interesting for every person. I'm sure that these days everyone is involved in politics. Could you explain for us a political system of America, please?

  • The United States of America, federation of 50 state was set up by the constitution in 1787. Under the Constitution the federal government is divided into 3 brunches.

The legislative power is vested in Congress. It's made up of two houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are 100 senators and 435 members of the House of Representatives.

The executive branch is headed by the president. The president proposes bills to Congress, enforces federal laws, makes treaties etc.

The judicial branch is made up of Federal District Courts, 11 Federal Courts and the Supreme Court.

The Senators are elected by popular vote for a term of six years two from each state. The Representatives are elected for two-years terms. The President is chosen in nation-wide elections every four years with the Vice- President.

  • Well, the political system of the USA differs from the Russian political system. This information was quite new for us. Thank you very much.

When people are working hard day by day they want to rest or just to relax. We know that there are a lot of holidays in America. But could you tell us about the main holidays and give us some interesting information about special days of your country?

  • You are right. There are a lot of holidays and special days in America. I'll try to tell you about favourite American holidays. The most important holiday is the Independence Day. The Americans celebrate this holiday on the 4th of July. There are parades in cities. Many families celebrate it by having picnics and family dinners at night , watching fireworks

Another popular holiday is Thanksgiving Day. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November People of all faiths celebrate this day.. On this day people don't go to work. Families get together and have a big dinner. The traditional food on this day is a turkey with stuffing. It is served with sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie for dessert..Apple cider is the drink of the day Football is the most popular game on this day. Charitable organizations serve dinner for needy people. They also send baskets of food to elderly and sick people

Winter holidays are very funny. Christmas and the New Year's Day are the most popular of them. People give presents to each other, have fun and hope for the best. For most American families, this is the most important festival of the year; it combines the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ with the traditional festivities of winter.

On the Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a carol service where special hymns are sung. Sometimes carol-singers can be heard on the streets as they collect money for charity. Most families decorate their houses with brightly-coloured paper or holly and they usually have a Christmas tree in the corner of the front room, glittering with coloured lights and decorations.

There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but perhaps the most important one is the giving of presents and cards.

Many people in America ,especially young people like Halloween .It's not an official holiday which is on the 31st of October. People wear costumes, have carnivals and tell each other ghost stories. Now Halloween is a holiday for children. All children are dressed in costumes of ghosts, clowns, goblins, witches, vampires etc. Many of them wear masks. There are Halloween parties in many schools. Dressed in costumes children go to the different houses, ring at the door saying "trick or treat" . This means that if people don't give them candies or apples or other tasty things, the children may play a trick on them.

There are also a lot of religious holidays in our country such as: Easter, Shrove Tuesday, Epiphany etc.

  • Thank you very much. The information was quite new for us and it was very interesting to listen to you.

When people choose a country to visit they always think about sights which they can see in this country. What can people see in the USA? What places of interest are the most popular among tourists?

  • Well. There are a lot of beautiful and interesting places to see and to visit in America and it's not possible to tell about all of them . So I'll tell about the most popular among tourists. The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by France in 1885.It stands in New York and gives a welcome to all visitors. The Statue depicts a woman in a flowing robe, wearing a spiked crown. She holds a flaming torch in her right hand. Inside the torch there is a light. It could be seen for 39 km. at sea. The Statue is 93 meters tall. It's one of the most recognizable symbols of the USA.

The US Capitol is a home for Congress. It is located in Washington D.C. The building was started in 1793 when G. Washington was the president of the US .In 1814, during the war, British troops set fire to the Capitol and only a rainstorm prevented its complete destruction .It took 3 years to complete the reconstruction of the famous building. It covers an area of f more than 16.000 square meters. It is also a museum of American art and history.

The Golden Gate Bridge connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County. It's 1280 meters long and has 6 lanes of traffic and 2 lanes for bicyclists. The bridge was built in 1937. The average day traffic is about 100/000 cars and buses. The orange colour of the bridge helps sailors and pilots to see the bridge in fig. The Golden Gate Bridge is considered one of the most beautiful examples of bridge engineering.

Niagara Falls is a set of giant waterfalls located on the Niagara river in eastern North America, between the United States and Canada. Niagara Falls consists of 3 separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the smaller, Bridal Veil Falls. The name "Niagara" originates from an Iroquois word onguiaahra meaning "the strait'. It is famous of its beauty, and it's also a valuable source of hydroelectric power. People all over the world come to see this natural wonder.

  • Well. I'd like to say thank you to all our guests. I'd like to thank them for their interesting stories. It was very pleasant to see you in our studio and listen to you. I think you also have spent a very good time. Thank you everybody for your attention. Good-bye.
