  1. Teacher: Good afternoon, boys and girls. I hope you are well. Let's start our lesson " Journey to the past and present of the USA". We finished our textbook and today we will try to generalise your knowledge on the material of this book and use extra information.

  2. Teacher: At the beginning of the lesson let's listen to each other about the geografical position of the USA. The guide or geografer will be ...., please go and show everything what the students will tell us about.( the map of the USA is on the screen)

Student 1: The US is one of the largest countries in the world. It lies in the central part of the North American Continent.

Student 2; The whole name of the US is the United States of America. There are 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Student 3; It is washed by the two oceans: the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Student 4: The country borders on Canada in the north and Mexico in the south.

Student 5: The USA consists of three parts: the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the central part of the USA.

Teacher: You know that every country has its symbols. And what about the USA? Let' s speak about them. (The flag is on the screen)

Student 6: The American flag has 13 stripes and 50 states because there are 50 states in the USA. The flag is red, blue and white and often called "Stars and Stripes". Americans love their flag very much and even have special holiday for it - the "Flag Day" which is celebrated on June 14th.

Teacher: In our book we read the text about the history of the flag. Please, remember some facts from the text (p.175) and do the test.(7 min.)

Well, let's continue to speak about national emblems. You know that in England it is a rose and what about the USA?

Student 7: The bald eagle is the official national symbol. It carries an olive branch as a sign of peace and arrows as a sign of strength.

Teacher: When we studied the chapter 'New York, New York" in the book, we spoke about the next symbol which is situated here. It is.....

Student 8: The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous unofficial USA symbols. It is a statue of a woman holding up a torch in her right hand. The Statue symbolizes liberty. France presented it to the USA in 1884.

Teacher: Boys and girls, let's turn over the pages of the history. Look at the screen, you'll see the key-words, you should tell us some stories from the history.

Student 9: Before the first Europeans came to North America there were people living who had red skin. The white men called them Red men or Indians. The Indians tribes were never united. In the woods of the north-east coast there were many animals and fish in the river. The Indians hunted and fished. They also grew corn for their food. In the south Indians grew tobacco. In the west there were many buffaloes. From buffalo skins the Indians made clothes and covered their houses - wigwams.(There is a picture of a wigwam on the screen).(слайд 10)

Teacher: What did the Indian wigwams look like?

Student 10: None of the Indian wigwams had chimneys or windows. A hole in the roof was supposed to let out the smoke and to let in the light. Much of the smoke found its way into the eyes and noses of poor Indians. On rainy days, when the smoke was very bad, everbody in wigwams lay with his face on the ground.

Teacher: That's why, Indians cooked in the open air. And now let's speak about white men who came to America.

Student 11: White men had visited America nearly 500 years before Columbus arrived. About the year 1000 a strange ship came to the eastern coast of North America. The men in the ship had long golden hair, blue eyes and fair skins. They wore armour and carried shields and spears. They lived in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They called themselves "Vikings".( The picture of a viking is on the screen).(слайд 10)

Student 12: Three countries of Europe were interested in the discovery of America. They were Spain, France and England. Spain sent Christopher Columbus to discover a new way to the East. He was a famous Italian explorer.(The photo of the explorer is on the screen).(слайд 10)

Student 1: In 1486 Columbus came to Spain and explained his idea to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The Queen promised Columbus to fit a small expedition to the Indies. He was provided with 3 ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina.

Student 2: That happened on Friday, October,12.1492. The Santa Maria came to anchor and Columbus went ashore. He thought it was Asia. The island was one of the Bachamas north of Cuba not far from the coast of Florida. Columbus named it San Salvador. It was America.

Teacher: And what about the English? When did they travel to America?

Student 3: In November 1620 a small ship "The Mayflower" left England. There were 100 people aboard the ship who were running away from the cruel king. For 7 long weeks the Mayflower was in the waves and storms of the Atlantic Ocean, and at last the peple saw the land. It was America. It was autumn. It was raining, and a cold wind was blowing. 16 men left the Mayflower and went ashore.(слайд 10)

Student 4: In the evening they came back to the ship and brought some corn with them. Next day was Sunday and everybody on the Mayflower had a rest. On Monday some men went ashore again and this time they took some women with them. The women had to wash the clothes. Since that time Monday has been a washday in America. During the next 5 weeks the men from the Mayflower left the ship every day.

Student 5: They were looking for a good place to live. The weather was very cold, more and more people fell ill, but at last they found a good place. By January 1621, there had already been 2 streets in the village, and they called it "New Plymouth".

Teacher: We have spoken about the history, but it's not, of course, ererything. Now you will do the test "History of the USA". (10 min.)

In a few minutes you will listen to the tests about different cities of the USA and you should fill in the table.

Text 1: The city has little industry and no skyscrapers. The Capitol, The White House, the Lincoln Memorial are there.

Text 2: It's the gateway to Alaska.
