Robert Burns is one of the most famous characters in Scottish Cultural History.

For many people, the first reading of any Burns Poem

it seems as if it has been written in an unknown foreign language! They can read the words and recognize many of them in Modern English,…..but it becomes difficult! It's the old Scottish language.

The cottage, now renamed "Burns Cottage"

Robert Burns was born on the 25th of January in 1759, in the tiny village of Alloway, Ayrshire, near to the town of Ayr on the West Coast of Scotland.

Robert Burns was born in this little cottage and was the eldest son of a poor peasant farmer, William. Life was extremely harsh and the farm was not succeeding. Even as a small child he was to work long hours with his father, and many evenings were spent round the fire listening to his mother's stories and his father's reading from the bible.

For Robert, the combination of poverty, hard work on the farm, story -telling, the influence of the Kirk (or Church), his studies, and a tremendous ability to observe life in general, was the making of The Man. He would develop a wicked sense of humour, frankness, a tender & thoughtful creativity, a deep pride in his beloved Scotland, and a passion for Women.

Burns died on the 21st in July, 1796 at the age of 37 in the South of Scotland. During his short life he would aspire to great things. After his death he became legendary.

That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,

So deep in luve am I,

And I will luve thee still, my Dear,

Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my Dear,

And the rocks melt wi' the sun!

O I will luve thee still, my Dear,

And fare thee weel a while!

And I will come again, my Luve,
