Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, was born on January 25, 1759, in a small clay cottage at Alleyway, in Ayrshire, Scotland. His father, William Burns, was a poor farmer. He built this small clay cottage with his own hands: There were seven children in the family, and Robert was the eldest. His father knew the value of a good education, and he tried to give his children the best education he could afford. Robert was sent to school at the age of six, but as his father could not pay for the two sons, Robert and his brother Gilbert attended school in turn. When not at school, the boys helped their father with his work in the fields. But soon the teacher left, and so Burns's father along with his four neighbours invited a young school-teacher. John Murdoch, to teach their boys. When Murdoch left, the poet's father taught the children himself. Reading and writing, arithmetic, English grammar, history, literature, French and Latin - that was Robert Burns's education.

Text\Reading\ Highlands games.
Highlands games are events held throughout the year in Scotland and other countries as a way of celebrating Scottish and Celtic culture. Certain aspects of the games are well known such as the bagpipes, the kilt and the heavy events especially the caber toss.
The Games also include entertainment and exhibits related to other aspects of Scottish culture.
Caber toss: A long pole is stood upright and hoisted by the competitor who runs forward attempting to toss it.
Scottish hammer throw: A round metal ball is attached to the end of a shaft about 4 feet in length and made out of wood, rattan or plastic. With the feet or fixed position, the hammer is whirled about one's head and thrown for distance over the shoulder.
Music. The most interesting of all events at the games is the massing of the pipe bands. The music of the bagpipe symbolizes music at the Games in Scotland itself.
Dance. The Highland Fling is one of the popular dancing at the Highland Games. It is very difficult and requires many hours of practice.
New words: To hoist-поднимать, to attempt- прoбовать, to attach- прикреплять, shaft-рукоятка, to whirl- вращаться.
Teacher: Answer my questions:
-
What games are held in Scotland throughout the year ?
-
What kinds of sport are popular in Scotland during Highland Games ?
-
