Приложение 1

Primorye at a Glance

By Denis BOYLE, Vladivostok News

Located in the southern most region of the Russian Far East is the beautiful Maritime Territory, Primorye.

Bordered on the north by Khabarovskii Krai and on the west by China, Primorye's southwestern tip touches North Korea, and the Sea of Japan washes its south and east coasts. The rugged shoreline is marked by many gulfs, bays and inlets. Gently sloping mountain ridges run parallel to each other from the southwest to the northeast, and two-thirds of the region's 165,900 square kilometers is forested. More than 40 rivers, most belonging to the Amur River basin, wend their ways through the territory.

Influences by the sea, the climate is relatively mild but monsoonal. Winter is short with little snow but cold and windy. Summers are rainy and foggy along the coast, with hot, humid days common in late summer. The spring is cool, and sunny autumn can be interrupted by heavy showers.

More than half of Primorye's 2.3 million people live in the southern and southwestern areas of the region where Vladivostok, the capital city with a population of roughly 700,000, is situated. Throughout Primorye there are 11 cities, 46 towns, 25 administrative districts, and 619 villages; however, only slightly more than 22% of the population lives in rural areas.

Nature has endowed Primorye with an abundant supply of both beauty and resources. The forests are varied with both coniferous and deciduous species, and there a number of rare plants and shrubs. The wildlife is diverse, ranging from elk, deer, bear and fur-bearing animals to rare species such as the Amur tiger and the albatross. The underwater world is not only rich in grasses, but also supports over 700 species of living organisms. In addition to mineral deposits containing at least fifty elements, Primorye boasts five mineral springs where popular health resorts and spas have been developed. Nature preserves dot the region, and the bays, islands and coves in the southern area provide beaches for swimming from July through late September.

Economic development of Primorye has been based primarily on extraction and use of its natural resources. Fishing, forestry, mining, sea transport and ship repair are main industries. Other important areas are military industries, transportation, energy, communications, agriculture and food processing, and the financial industry.

This month we are highlighting the financial and maritime industries. Coverage of the latter includes a close look at the fishing industry, the first of our regular, indepth analyses of the various sectors of the region's economy.

In the second and third special issues, which are scheduled for publication in November and December, we will feature the timber and mining industries, offer additional analysis of financial markets.
