I.
T.: Good morning everybody! I am glad to see you!
T.: OK. The topic of our lesson is: "Wonders of the world". The aims of our lesson are: to summarize your knowledge of Seven Wonders of the world "through" the integration of historic aspects; to learn about some modern wonders of the world and to develop your speaking abilities.
II.
So, the Seven Wonders of the world were great works of art and architecture regarded by ancient Greek and Roman observes as the most extraordinary structures of antiquity. Let's name them.
1. The Pyramids of Egypt.
2. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus.
3. The Mausoleum at Halicarrassus.
4. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
5. The Pharos of Alexandria.
6. The Colossus of Rhodes.
7. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia.
III.
At the previous lessons we spoke too much about them. Now look at the board and let's say a few words about them.
1) What can you say about Pyramids?
2) What can you say about the Hanging Gardens?
3) What can you say about the Statue of Zeus at Olympia?
4) What can you say about the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus?
5) What can you say about the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus?
6) What can you say about the Colossus of Rhodes?
7) What can you say about the Pharos of Alexandria?
IV.
Now I see you are ready to have a test. Open your textbooks and look through the text again. (Ex. 2 p. 68-69, Students book) Are you ready? Then use your index finger to click the mouse and begin testing. Match the questions with the names from the list below. Some of the names may be chosen more than once.
In which of the texts does it say the monument:
1. Was built by a well-known artist?
The Statue of Zeus

The Pharos of Alexandria
4. Was built to make more money for the city?
The Pharos of Alexandria/The Colossus of Rhodes
5. Was connected with sport?
The Statue of Zeus

The Pharos of Alexandria/The Temple of Artemis/The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
7. Was the idea of a woman?
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
8. Attracted people for religious purposes?
The Temple of Artemis
9. Could be seen from far away?
The Pharos of Alexandria/The Colossus of Rhodes
V.
It's high time to finish your tests. I am eager to know your results. Good for you!
VI.
It's a pity that "The Seven Wonders of the world" have left no remains, except the Pyramids of Egypt. But nowadays we hear a lot about some modern Wonders of the world.
1. Disneyland Paris.
2. The Statue of Liberty.
3. The Leaning Tower of Pisa.
4. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
5. The Eiffel Tower.
I'm sure you know them except the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. And I want you to read the background notes about it.
The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao opened to the public on Sunday, October 19, 1997. Designed by Frank O. Gehry and located in the city of Bilbao in northern Spain, the museum is devoted to American and European art of the 20th century. It is a collection of interconnected blocks housing galleries, an auditorium, a restaurant, a museum shop and administrative offices.
T.: Now you're going to have the Listening Comprehension. Before you listen to the text, let's check the meaning of these words, you will need them for the listening exercise.
A haunted house - a place where ghosts appear (дом, наводненный призраками).
Trademark - name or symbol used by a company on its products (отличительный знак).
Three-dimensional - it can be measured in three dimensions, ie height, depth and width (стереоскопический кинофильм).
Index finger - it is next to your thumb (указательный палец).
Angle - the difference in direction between two lines or surfaces (угол).
Now let's do FCE practice: Part 3 (Ex. 3 p. 73). Listen to these people talking about some modern wonders of the world. For questions 1-5, choose which of the 'wonders' A-F each speaker is referring to. Use the letters only once. There is one extra letter which you do not need to use.
1.
It was the most amazing holiday I've ever had. What I really enjoyed more than anything was the pirate ship. It was incredibly real - you felt you were actually back in the days when pirates really existed. But there are so many different things you can do - you can go on a space journey, you know, a journey into outer space, just by pressing a few buttons and putting on some special headphones. I'll also remember the haunted house and - oh - yes the three-dimensional cinema. Everything felt so real. I'd love to go again, and although it's quite expensive, I'd definitely recommend it.
2.
The first thing that strikes you about it is its size: it's absolutely huge. It dominates the city though it's not actually in the centre of the city - it's on an island in the harbour area. I think someone said it was 151 feet tall, which is about 46 metres - now that's pretty big for a statue. You can see it from miles away, it's amazing, I mean the hand itself is five metres long and the index finger is really - something like two or three metres. Anyway, the important thing is, it's a really impressive symbol of freedom and American independence.
3.
When I looked around I realized I was standing in one of the most beautiful squares in the world. The best time to visit the square is the early spring. It's a pity you can't go up the tower anymore. It was closed sometime ago because they were afraid it would collapse; it would be a great shame, because it's been there since the thirteenth century. When I first saw it, I was impressed by the angle - it really does look ready to fall - you see, the architect made a mistake and his foundations weren't deep enough. It still looks absolutely marvelous, though. One of the finest sites in Italy. It would be terrible if it collapsed.
4.
Well. As an engineer myself, I find the tower a very impressive achievement. It is amazing that when it was being built in 1889, it was greeted with howls of protest, and even famous French writers like Zola didn't approve of it. I think it looks a bit like a huge iron finger pointing up at the sky. These days it's become the trademark, the symbol of the city. And apart perhaps from the Arc de Triomphe or the Louvre, it's what one thinks of first. You can climb up it, but if you're lazy like me you take the lift, and from the top, you get a panoramic view of the whole city.
5.
It's the most incredible building I have ever seen. It does look strange, right in the middle of a modern city. Someone said it looks like a huge soufflé; others say it's like a ship or even a cauliflower. It was finished in 1997 and it has done wonders for Bilbao. The city had real problems, but now it has been change overnight by this amazing museum. It was designed by an American architect, Frank Gehry, and a lot of people say it's his masterpiece.
Which 'wonder':
A was unpopular when it was being built?
Speaker 1___
B cannot be visited at present?
Speaker 2___
C has been good for the city?
Speaker 3___
D can be seen from far away?
Speaker 4___
E was built to celebrate a sports event?
Speaker 5___
F offers visitors entertainment?
Now let's check.
Speaker 1 E (Disneyland Paris)
Speaker 2 D (Statue of Liberty)
Speaker 3 B (Leaning Tower of Pisa)
Speaker 4 A (Eiffel Tower)
Speaker 5 C (Guggenheim Museum Bilbao)
VII.
For the next lesson you will have to find some more information about these modern wonders and be ready to have a brief discussion on the topic: "Which one would you choose to save and why?".
VIII.
And for today you were to plan a tourist broshure called "The Wonders of the world for your country". Take all you need and come here. So, you work at the "Tourist Agency" and you should try to persuade us that wonder you suggest is worth seeing.
1. Zerendy
2. Okjetpes
3. Zhumbaktas
4. Medeu, Chimbulak
5. Baiterek
Agent 1. The southern part of the region Borovoe, Shuchinsk, Zerenda is rightly called Kazakhstan's Switzerland. The picturesque lakes, whimsical conglomerations of rocks, thick coniferous forests, mineral springs and salubrious air makes the region the best place for relaxation. There are more than 20 sanatoriums, health resorts and tourist centres located there.
Agent 2. I work at the travel agency for a long time and I know how to interest the tourists. And I think we have to include Okjetpes, because I may attract the attention of the tourist and this legend may be also interesting for them. So, before or after Jekebatyr nobody can tell about it precisely, but in one of the peaceful auls of Kokshetau an unusual boy was born. He was a big boy and every day he grew more and more. At ten years old he was so extended upwards, that the arrow, putting from the grand, reached only his breast. The people named him Okjetpes, that is "the arrow will not reach". As he became high, he attained the remarkable strength. And there was not such live-stock, who could maintain him and he tamed even the elephant.
Agent 3. In ancient times one very rich man lived. He had many sons and only one daughter. She was very beautiful. Once magnificent jigit came to their aul. He and the girl fell in love with each other. The richman couldn't agree to their marriage and young run away from the aul. On the coast of Kumiskol, in the Burabai vicinities they set their hut. The jigit constructed the boat and the couple floated on the water. Richman's sleuths upon the tracks of the fugitives and one day when they rowed up too close to the coast the girl's brother didn't miss their chance. The grey arrow pierced direct in the heart of the jigit. The girl asked Allah to convert her into the stone. Our ancestors named this rock as Jumbaktas. If you look at the rock from one side it reminds the boat, on other side - it the girl, on one more side you can see the old bowed woman.
Agent 4. Sport complex "Medeo" is very famous. It is situated high in the mountains. International sport competitions in skating often take place there. A big international festival "The Voice of the Asia" is also held there. Many participants from all parts of Asia and the world arrive in Almaty to this festival. Thousands of people come to "Medeo" to see the great international show.
Alpine skiing centre "Chimbulak" is also very famous. Thanks to its unique position in the necklace of blue emerald peaks of Trans-Ili Alatau covered with snow, Chimbulak is a real pearl of Kazakhstan. It is one of the centres of the international tourism and one of the attractive places in the Euro-Aisan continent.
Agent 5. There are many places of interest in Astana: the Central Square and the Tselinniks Avenue, the Palace of the Youth and the Bridge across the Ishim River, the Reginal Museum of Fine Arts and others. But the most magnificent beautiful building is Baiterek. It is the symbol of union and friendship of people living in Kazakhstan. A lot of tourists consider it as one of the Wonders of Kazakhstan.
T.: Now its time to say good-bye! I hope my students arouse your desire to visit these mentioned places of interest.
I hope visiting these Kazakhstan's sightseeings you will be convinced that they are natural "Wonders of the World" of our country.
