Today we are going to speak about one of the most wonderful things in the world. Well, try to guess what it is. It has no mouth, but speaks. It is not alive, but it can be a good friend. It is not a tree, but it has leaves. What is it?

It's a book.

Right it's a book. A wise man said: "Life without books is as a tree without leaves." Do you understand this quotation?

I think life without books looks as poor and unhappy as a tree without leaves.

Reading plays a very important role in the life of people. It educates a person, enriches his intellect. Books help to mould a person's character, his moral values. Besides, books bring pleasure and delight. It's a wonderful way of spending spare time. Sometimes we read the same book again and again Throughout the centuries books had enormous influence on the minds and hearts of people. Books awaken the young reader's imagination. They develop literary taste; arouse interest and curiosity.

Do you like to read books? Give some opinions on reading books using the phrases

I am keen on

I am fond of

I am interested

1. Thanks to books we learn to express our thoughts and feelings more exactly.

2. A book is a faithful and understanding friend. It can be put aside and taken up again any moment.

Let's speak about our library.

1. When a reader comes to a library for the first time he feels in library card and Fatima Michailovna helps to choose something to read. The reader is allowed to borrow books for a certain number of days. The catalogues help the reader to find the books and not damage them in any way. Readers come to the reading rooms to study and prepare materials for their reports or for their scientific work.

2. The choice of books in our library is very good. There are many short stories and novels, textbooks and reference books, dictionaries and encyclopedias there. All books are arranged in alphabetical order. There are bookshelves from the floor to the ceiling full of books. Copies of fresh newspapers and magazines lie in piles on the tables. When we take a book, we mustn't write anything on the pages, and we must return books to the library in time. I think it is necessary to follow these rules.

One of Mark Twain's jokes.

Mark Twain had to give a lecture in a small town. He got to the town in the afternoon, and after dinner went into a shop to buy some ink and paper. Then he told the man in the shop that he wanted to see some of the interesting buildings and places in the town, and he asked the man to tell him what to see and where to go. The man took a city map and showed him where to go. Then he said'Mark Twain is going to give a lecture at the writer's club this evening. If you want to go to the lecture, you must buy your ticket now. If you don't, you'll have to stand during the whole lecture. '

Yes, yes I know, Mark Twain said. Whenever Mark Twain lectures, I have to stand.

Balzac and the thief.

Once Balzac was lying in bed awake. Suddenly he saw a man who wanted to pick the lock of his writing table. The thief was not afraid on hearing a loud laugh.

'Why are you laughing? asked the thief.

'I am laughing, my good fellow, 'said Balzac, 'to think what pains you are taking and risk you run in hope of finding money by night in a desk when the owner can never find any by day.

Here are some riddles. Try to guess!

I have many leaves,
But I am not a tree;
I'm something nice,
Come and read me.

The field is white,
Black is the seed,
And sower who sowed it
Was clever indeed.

I'm neither a rhyme nor a song,
I can be short or very long,
I can be funny or quite sad,
But to read me you'll be glad.

Proverbs and golden rules.

1. Books are our best friends.

2. Choose an author as you choose a friend.

3. Treat books with care as good friends.

4. Do your best to tear, spot, mark up or damage a book in any way.

5. Do not turn down a page to mark the chapter where you left off reading. Use a book-mark.

My Hobby (Reading)

My hobby is reading. Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers.

Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read a novel, when a play on television can tell you1 the same story with colour, picture, and action? Why read the biographies of famous people, when an hour-long television programme can tell you all that you want to know?

Television has not killed reading, however. Today newspapers and magazines are sold in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and entertainment.

Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are published today as paperback books, which are reasonably cheap. A paperback novel, for example, is almost always cheaper than an evening in the cinema or theatre, and you can keep a book forever and read it many times.

Books at home are a wonderful source of knowledge and pleasure, and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have dictionaries. Every home should have an atlas of the world, with large maps. A good encyclopedia is useful, too, because there you can find information on any subject.

In addition, it is useful to have on your bookshelves other inquiry books such as history, science textbooks, cookery books, books about medicine and health, etc.

It is important to have some fiction on your shelves, too. Then you can relax with a good story, or from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelf and read the thoughts and feelings of your favourite poets.

Books in Our Life

Nowadays it's almost impossible to imagine our life without books. Perhaps, there are more books on our planet than men alive.

Long before the invention of printing people valued books as treasure troves of the human knowledge and experience. Hand - written manuscripts took months of writing and were collected by and kept in monasteries with utmost care. We can distinguish books between three classes of them.

Firstly, books on different branches of knowledge, works by brilliant minds of mankind. Secondly, textbooks, reference books and numerous dictionaries. And at last, books of all kinds and genres to read at leisure.

Classics should be taken a little at a time. One's understanding of books by Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Mopassan and Balzak depends on one's age and experience.

Serious books are to be read conscientiously and maybe more than once. To a thinking reader they will provide new food for thought every time he rereads it. Many people indulge in reading science fiction, fantasy or detective stories. Of course, there are some advantages and disadvantages of this kind of literature, often reffered to as «easy reading».

As for me, good science fiction and fantasy develop imagination, logical thinking, broader one's outlook.

The same could be said in favour of detective stories. They reveal such minute details of everyday life in this or that particular country that are of greatest interest for a curious reader. The masterpieces of this genre by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and others, show the depths of psychological analysis, the insight into the human nature.

As an old saying goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of knowledge and the means of self - perfection. Sometimes it is difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can help us. Books must be our friends during all our life.

Vocabulary:

treasure trove - сокровищница
monastery - монастырь
conscientiously - сознательно
to indulge in - увлекаться
science fiction - научная фантастика
outlook - кругозор

British Literature -

British Literature

Great Britain gave the world a lot of talented people. Many famous writers and poets were born and lived in Great Britain.

One of the best known English playwrights was William Shakespeare. He draw ideas for his tragedies and comedies from the history of England and ancient Rome. Many experts consider Shakespeare the greatest writer and the greatest playwright in English language. William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays which may be divided into: comedies (such as "A Midsummer Night's Dream"), tragedies (such as "Hamlet", "Othello", "King Lear", "Macbeth") and historical plays (such as "Richard II", "Henry V", "Julius Caesar", "Antony and Cleopatra").

Robert Burns represents the generation of Romantic writers. In his poems he described with love and understanding the simple life he knew. Among his well-known poems are "Halloween", "The Jolly Beggars", "To a Mouse".

Lord George Gordon Byron. His free-spirited life style combined with his rare poetic gift makes him one of the most famous figures of the Romantic Era. His famous works such as "Stanzas to Augusta", "The Prisoner of Chillon", "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage", "Manfred" draw readers into the passion, humors and conviction of a poet whose life and work truly embodied the Romantic spirit.

Sir Walter Scott wrote the first examples of historical novel.

Lewis Carroll became famous when he published "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".

My Favourite Book

My favourite book is "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe. D. Defoe (1660-1731) was a great master of realistic detail. The novel "Robinson Crusoe" was written in 1719. The novel is praise to human labour and the triumph of man over nature.

Defoe shows the development of his hero. At the beginning of the story we see an inexperienced youth, a rather frivolous boy, who then becomes a strong-willed man.

Robinson Crusoe's most characteristic trait is his optimism. His guiding principle in life become "never say die" and "in trouble to be troubled is to have your troubles doubled".

He had confidence in himself and in man. He believed it was within the power of man to overcome all difficulties. Crusoe was an enthusiastic worker and always hoped for the best.

Defoe is a writer of the Enlightenment. He teaches people how to live, he tries to teach what's good and what's bad. His novel "Robinson Crusoe" is not only a work of fiction, an account of adventures, a biography and an educational pamphlet.

It is a study of man, a great work showing man in relation to nature and civilization as well as in relation to labour and private property.

Vocabulary:

praise - п. хвала, v.
triumph - торжество, победа
unexperienced - неопытный
frivolous - пустой, легкомысленный
trait -: черта (характера)
trouble - п. беда, беспокойство, v.
to double - удваивать

My Favourite Book (4)

I've recently read a book, which has made a very deep impression on me. It is named "Gone with the Wind" The author of the book is Margaret Mitchell. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in a family of the president of the Atlanta Historical Society.

All the family was interested in American history and she grew up in an atmosphere of stones about the Civil War.

After graduating from the college Margaret Mitchell worked for a time for the Atlanta Journal. In 1925 she got married. In the following ten years she put on paper all the stories she had heard about the Civil War.

The result was Gone with the Wind. It was first published in 1936 and became the talking point of all America.

In 1939 the book was made into a highly successful film. Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable played the leading roles. Vivien Leigh won the Oscar. Everyone loved her high-spirited and beautiful heroine, Scarlett O'Hara.

The story is set around the time of the American Civil War (1861-1865), when the Southern states went to war with the North to defend their way of life.

It was a way of life in which rich gentry lived in large houses and owned huge areas of land, cultivated by black slaves. Scarlett O'Hara was born in one of those rich houses.

But "Gone with the Wind" is also about a love triangle. While Scarlett loves the quiet, gentlemanly Ashley Wilkes, the wild and decidedly ungentlemanly Rhett Butler is in love with her.

Not so long ago, in 1991, a publishing company asked Alexandra Ripley, a historical novelist, to write the continuation of the story. Her novel "Scarlett" was not in the same class as the original. Critics have been writing very bad reviews of "Scarlett" but the book is popular with the public.

My Favourite Book (3)

My favourite book is "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I first discovered these stories when I was about twelve and I've loved them ever since. They're brilliantly written, full of bizarre crimes and they've got a terrific Victorian atmosphere.

When you read them you really feel like you've been carried back to nineteenth-century London.

All the twentieth century detectives like Miss Marple and Inspector Morse seem really boring compared to Sherlock Holmes.

That's where Conan Doyle, really makes you believe that Holmes is unique - a genius with amazing mental powers.

Normally I only read detective stories once. I mean, why read them again when you know what happens in the end?

With the Sherlock Holmes stories, though, its different.

Each time I re-read them I discover more and more to enjoy.
