a) Pupils, are you sure that food you usually eat is good for your health? Listen to Dr. Murphy's lecture and answer what food is useful.

-In order to stay healthy it is important to have a balanced diet - in other words, food that contains something from each of the three main groups of food. These groups are protein, fat, and carbohydrates.

You find protein in lots of food, for example meat, fish, nuts, cheese and milk. It helps your body to grow and to be healthy and it gives you energy. Fat gives you energy but don't eat a lot - it's bad for you. There are a lot of fatty foods that come from animals, for example milk, cheese, butter and meat.

Carbohydrates give you more than 70% of your energy. Bread, pasta, cereals, fruits, and vegetables such as potatoes and cabbage all contain lots of carbohydrates.

Fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts, brown bread have fiber. It doesn't give you energy but it fills your stomach when you are hungry.

There are many different vitamins and minerals. They help our body be healthy. You can find vitamin B in eggs, nuts, milk, meat and cereals. It helps our bodies process the foods we eat. Vitamin C is in lemons, oranges and broccoli. It's good for our bones and teeth. There is vitamin D in milk, eggs, butter and cheese. It

helps our bones grow properly. Vitamin E is in lettuce, nuts, broccoli and cereals. It keeps our sin healthy.

Pupils listen to the text for the first time, then they are given the text of the lecture with missing words which they fill in and then read.

1. What's your favourite dish?

2. What do you usually eat/drink at school (for breakfast, on a special occasion)?

3. Who skips breakfast?

4. Who eats regularly?

4

5. Do you eat between meals?

9. Do you prefer semi products?

10. Do you use alcohol?

11. Do you have bad habits?

12. Who prefers hot and spicy food?

13. Are you fond of fatty foods?

14. Who likes coca-cola?

b) Now unite into two groups and using the answers show us good and bad habits in our nutrition.

BAD HABITS:

1. The majorities of pupils skip breakfast- it is bad for young people. Not without reason you can hear the proverb" Eat breakfast yourself".

2. Snacks between meals are very popular with our pupils. Schools also sell snacks such as crisps, chocolate, sweets, scones and biscuits.

3. Semi products are very often used because people work a lot and don't have time to cook.

4. Ukrainian people are fond of fat products, such as lard, bacon, and shashlik or cream. Fat can cause obesity and heart diseases. A lot of people are overweight.

5. Using such drinks as cola and more over alcohol is a very bad habit.

6. Also there are people who don't eat meat or fowl at all. They are vegetarians. But it isn't good, because in fish and in meat there are some ingredients without which our health won't be strong.

7. Many people have to eat out of home in restaurants or in cafes. In such places you can order French fries, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, crisps, pizza and many others, but these meals are very harmful for our health. There are people who like salty, hot and spicy or sweet food. Also we all like roasted and grilled food, but it is also very harmful.

GOOD HABITS:

1. People use a lot of fruit and vegetables- they are rich in vitamins.

2. The fashion for healthy food is growing all the time. People started to eat less fat and more fiber. High fiber and low fat foods can be found in all shops and supermarkets.

3. Many people follow a calorie-controlled diet. They try to cut out snacks, eat whole meal bread instead of white and lose weight.

4. Our government took a decision to ban drinking alcohol in public places.

5. Nowadays a lot of people believe that only healthy food must be eaten. They don't eat spaghetti, chops, sausages, grilled meat fish, fowl. They prefer to eat

boiled and stewed vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, egg-plants, and carrots. They certainly eat meat and fish but only boiled.

5

6. In all big cities you can find Indian, Chinese, Japanese and other oriental restaurants. Nowadays you can order you favourite meals by telephone, but despite it a lot of people like to cook themselves.

7. Before cooking something you must buy some food stuffs. In big cities there are supermarkets and department stores where you can buy everything you need in daily life: from a tooth brush up to cars and furniture. Certainly you can buy there any food stuffs. Also there are food shops and markets. In markets it is better to buy greens, vegetables and fruits. It is safer to buy meat, fowl and fish in shops because they must be kept in refrigerator.

-Thanks a lot for your work and now some facts to entertain you

b) PRESENTATION: Pizza

Ingredients for the base: 500g flour, 4 tablespoons olive oil,1 teaspoon salt

300 ml warm water, 2 teaspoons dried yeast,1/2 teaspoon sugar

Ingredients for the piazzaiola (the tomato stuff to cover the base)

one onion

3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 /2 clove of garlic, 400g tin of chopped tomatoes

1 teaspoon oregano, a couple of leafs of fresh basil,1/4 teaspoon of salt

A pinch of freshly ground pepper

Toppings (per pizza) (use any cheese and topping you like, this is just an example)

One mozzarella cheese,2 slices of ham,2 slices of salami

1. Put the flour into a bowl.

2. Mix the yeast with the sugar and 50ml of warm water and stir, let sit for 10 minutes until it develops a nice foam on top.

3. Add the olive oil and salt to the flour.

4. This is what the yeast will look like after 10 minutes. Now add the yeast to the flour, oil and salt and add the rest of the lukewarm water (250 ml). Mix with your hands and knead until you have smooth dough...

5. ... this should look like this! If you have any left-over dough, you can easily freeze it - I always make a bit more and keep the rest in the freezer for a quick supper.

6. Cover the dough with a clean, dry dish towel and let it sit for an hour.

7. In the meantime, prepare a simple pizzaiola - chop the onion and the garlic, fry in the olive oil, add the tomatoes and the spices. Let simmer for half an hour to reduce the moisture, take a blender to it and then let it cool down.

8. This is what the dough will look like after it has risen. Now is the time to preheat your oven to full blast.

7

9. Take 1/3 of the dough and spread it out into the pizza pan with your fingers. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes so it can rise again. If you want a very thin and crisp base, roll out the dough with a rolling pin instead of spreading it with your fingers.

10. Chop the mozzarella.

11. Chop up your toppings - I'm using ham and salami here.

12. Spread the piazzaiola - best done by putting it into the middle and then moving the pan quickly back and forth.

13. Put on your toppings...

Don't overdo it on the topping side - stick with 2 or 3 toppings and don't put on too much. An overloaded pizza isn't any good.

14. And then put on the cheese. Put into the pre-heated oven for approx.

20 minutes. If you find that your cheese starts to burn before the pizza base

is done, put the pizza into the oven without the cheese for 5 minutes and then

add the cheese.

15. 20 minutes later - and look at that… Help yourself!!!
