Robert Burns was born in a poor family. He was the eldest of seven children born to William Burns.

His father was a poor farmer, but a hard-working and clever man. His greatest wish was to give his children the best education he could afford. His mother had a very good voice and she often sang songs. Приложение №3 Слайд №10

1765 Robert was sent to school. He was fond of reading. His favourite writer was W. Shakespeare.

Robert's childhood and adolescence were not happy. At 13 he worked in the field on a par with grown-ups.

1773 Robert was 14. He wrote his first poem in that year. (It was "Handsome Nell.") It was written for a girl who worked in the field with him. R. B. wrote about people, about everyday things.

1784 In February Robert's father died and R. became the head of the family. Life on the farm grew harder and harder. So the Burns moved to a smaller farm of Mossgiel. Robert wanted to make the new farm better. He read books on farming. But his farm brought him disappointment and misery. In 1784, at a dancing party, R. Burns met the "beauty of the village" - Jean Armour, the daughter of a rich a master mason. It was "love at first sight." Jean had a beautiful voice. Robert composed songs for her and she song them with great pleasure. Jean and Robert loved each other dearly. They could be happy, but they weren't. Jean's father didn't want his daughter to marry R. because he was poor. Burns was unhappy.

In spite off all these difficulties Robert began to write a book of poems. He felt the injustice of the world. His protest is shown in his poems. He wrote about kindness and honesty of common people.

1786 August, Kilmarnock. Robert Burns published his poems in Kilmarnock. Their success was great. The publication changed Burns' life. Burns was so encouraged he decided to go to Edinburgh. There he was introduced to many famous people. All were impressed by his modesty, his witty conversation and excellent manners.

1787 April. The second edition of Burns' poems appeared in Edinburgh. It brought him money. Robert made several trips around the country and saw beautiful landscapes of the Highlands. He visited some historical places, which made a great impression on him.

1789 Burns bought a farm of his own not far from the town of Dumfries. By that time he had married Jean Armour. The new farm didn't bring Burns any profit. Fortune was against him again. His friends helped him to get a job in Dumfries and R. B. became an excise man for his district.

The last 5 years of his life were very difficult for him. His work was hard. But he went on writing his beautiful poems and songs. He wanted people to understand that treasures and pleasures can't make people happy. Now he was a real ruin because of the hunger and hard work of his early years. However, he was rather happy, because his life was full of love.

1796 Robert Burns died in poverty.
