Students have to complete the crossword by finding answers from websites.
The information received from the Web search will be used to make up a leaflet to be spread among all the school students.
The main part of the lesson:
Teacher:
Students of your age should understand that they will be faced with a variety of decisions regarding their health, and that some of them might involve substances of abuse. Experimentation with drugs often begins in early adolescence. In addition to morbidity and mortality due to injury, drug use is related to suicide, early unwanted pregnancy, school failure, delinquency, and transmissions of sexually transmitted diseases, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. For example, in USA 42.4% of high school students had used marijuana and 9.4% of high school students had used some form of cocaine in their lifetime. Our lesson will be focused on drug abuse but first of all look through these brochures.
One of the students distributes a variety of brochures to others. The brochures are on travel, information, local services.
T; Which brochures are you most likely to read. Why? Which brochures will you remember or hang onto? Why?
Students are to discuss layout, graphics, photos and written content.
T: From the discussion we can form a list of the elements that make a brochure effective, including:
-
Easy-to-read layout
-
Written content appropriate for the target reader
-
Interesting and relevant graphics/photos
You will be creating a brochure about drug abuse, aimed at your fellow students.
The brochure's information will come from research you gather from the Web as you find the answers to a crossword puzzle.
One of the students distributes to each student copies of the Drug Abuse Crossword and the Drug Information Web sites list.
T: While you are completing the crossword, you should take notes on any information you would like to include in your brochure.
Students find out the information on drug abuse within the various websites and try to fill in the Drug Abuse Crossword. After that they check the answers with the teacher.
T: Now you are ready to create your own brochure about drug abuse, aimed at your fellow students. Use information you've gathered from the Web.
Break into groups to work on the Drug Abuse brochure. Each group should decide which general information on drug abuse is most important for the brochure.
Students change their places forming some groups to design their Drug Abuse brochures using paper, pens, markers.
The teacher encourages the class to make sure their brochures include:
-
A catchy title and/or slogan
-
Eye-grabbing graphics
-
Humor, analogies, or case studies
-
An easy-to-read layout
Students create their Drug Abuse leaflets.
T: Now you are ready for presentation. Show your classmates the Drug Abuse leaflets and tell about each brochure.
Students discuss the leaflets.
Ending the lesson:
T: Thank you for your good work.
Listen to your homework - you should have the Drug Abuse brochures copied and distribute them throughout the school. A further extension would be for you to generate your Drug Abuse brochures on-line (on the school's Web site).
